the song was actually written by mike shinoda not chester.
mike wrote it way before meteora about a good friend of
his, but he was never able to finish the song.
when they made metora mike knew that this song would be a perfect fit for chester, both lyrically and vocal wise. and he was right chester, who at the time struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs digged the song so much. so they probably re wrote some lines together and chester recorded it, while having a hard time doing so due to the strong emotions and how the song was really hittin' home at the time for chester.

Mike apparently wrote the lyrics and left it behind for Chester to read. After reading, Chester was so overcome with emotion that he checked himself into rehab and started working on this song. Just see any LP live performances, Chester usually closes the show with a acapella version of this song with the crowd singing along. In almost all the videos I've seen, Chester struggles to control his emotions while singing this song. He fought the good fight and lost. RIP Chester.
Chester went through too much man. I don’t know if anybody can really comprehend the amount of struggles he carried around. I wish I could have shouldered some of that burden.

Chester's wife let us know, with tears in her eyes & a heavy heart, that Chester was battling demons WAY before they even met. She said that it was difficult for him to talk about these things, especially when you don't think anyone can relate. She admitted that it was extremely hard at first, and at times she wondered if it was worth it. People thought he had conquered his demons, but as she & a few others close to him said, "letting down your guard is far too easy. We let our guard down. We forgot to ask the questions; how are you? Are you ok? How's it going?" She went on to tell a story about how someone (I forget who) asked him how his day was going & at some point, while he was talking, fell asleep. "He came to me really sad & disappointed. I asked him why & said, 'he didn't really want to know how my day was going.' "
I'm not 100% on the quoted but better safe than sorry.

Dude, you hit the nail in the head when you said he was warning us. You can always hear the pain in his voice. I knew this back then 19 years ago. I never related to Chester back in the day because i was so young and I never experienced what he felt. I recently had a LP binge and oh god! Chester gives me chills(in a good way).
I was listening man, there's so many songs when you feel like hes warning us. So many things are clear now that I've had some real life experiences. Chester is one of the greats, dude helped and saved so many but couldn't help or save himself 😢. It makes "nobody can save me now" heartbreaking 💔. I'm gonna go cry myself to sleep now.
Of topic, LP/Fort Minor/Lupe Fiasco. "Be somebody" off of Rising Tied is how I discovered Lupe. Probably my 2 most influential artist. Crawling was the first song I ever played on the piano and those DBZ videos were the shit. Thank you LP/Chester/Mike. Thank you Ernest for helping some of us relive part of our childhood. One love

You're right about NF fans also liking Linkin Park. I came to your Channel because of the NF reactions and I'm a big LP fan. I even have a LP tattoo I got years ago and have seen them in concert more than any other band (7 times). I don't enjoy LP music like I used to. I just get a pit in my stomach and ache inside when I hear their music. I've not purposely listened to them since Chester died. I will listen to it if it comes on the radio but can't get past the emptying feeling when I hear them. Because Chester is gone.
Chester has the best rock voice ever!! No one could scream like him and he was very open about what he was going through. I wish he had decided to live that day.
It just hurts (for me) to listen to LP anymore.
I miss him so much :( I am 38 and Chester has saved me so many times. He still does, to this day, but now there is a bittersweet feeling to having his voice and words help me because we didn't help him :(

I miss Chester I am so happy I was able to go to The Hollywood Bowl and The Linkin Park and Friends tribute concert to Chester. I cried the whole three hours. I have everything they have ever done and its just sad without Chester.

The most chilling line to me is I'll "paint" it on the walls because I'm the one at fault. It refers back to him clutching his "cure".... It's a handgun. The paint on the walls will be his blood from the bullet he uses to kill himself because he can't live with his own slow self destructive ways any longer. After all, he has no options left again. After the bridge which is the complete revealation of his plan to end his life he announces he now has clarity to show us what he means. It's a very deep, dark and sad song. I think this was Mike's warning to Chester and all of us to seek help and solace in others before this ends up being our story. Even though depression claimed Chester he has saved countless others with this song that he himself found very hard to sing without getting emotional. His was NOT a life that was wasted.

I feel like Linkin Park, no matter what song you listen to, is timeless. This came out in 2003, but doesn't sound like it's from 2003, and you can just bump this any time.

You’re absolutely right that Chester was a great songwriter. He just didn’t write this song. Mike Shinoda wrote every word of it. Mike always said it was about “a friend,” but it’s pretty clear it was about and for Chester, at a time when he was struggling to stay sober. He had been working on the music for years and then it all just came together while they were making Meteora. Chester talked about having a hard time recording it, it was so emotional for him. And it would ultimately be a few more years before they would have an intervention and he would finally get sober (at least mostly sober.) I always interpreted the habit Chester is “breaking” in the video as that overall self-destructive tendency that manifested itself in more ways than just addiction.
Another example of Mike writing a song for and about Chester is “Nobody Can Save Me,” from One More Light. It’s also just a beautiful damn song.

When I was diagnosed with epilepsy back in 2014I was in a very dark place bc I didn't know what to do the seizures were terrible I would stay in my room and not wanting to be around people I was a dick and saying stuff I didn't mean and this song helped get out of that place

It's funny to me for me when I first listen to breaking the habit back when I was like twelve or thirteen I was not the guy that really pay attention to lyrics but as soon as Chester started singing I knew exactly what he was talking about even though he didn't directly stated it was about suicide. The Linkin Park one that always gets me now (other than one more light) is Leave Out All The Rest, especially after Chester's passing.
