  • Mastering. Don't Use Multiband Maximizer Limiter. Mastering Tip Based on a Real Project. Very Useful for Master Bus Limiter and Loudness Understanding. We'll Check Waves L2 and L3. To Attend a free trial class of this Audio Production Course send email to: andrewzeleno@gmail.com
    In This Video We Will Talk About: Top Sounding Mastering. We'll Use my project where I produced and mixed Ice Cube "We Be Clubbin'" Song in Cubase DAW. This Mastering tips will be suitable for any genre. We'll talk about Why Loudness is necessity in modern music production and how not to spoil your song by boosting the volume. We'll use Waves L2 Master Limiter to explain how maximizer works. We'll talk about transients, sustain, 0 dbFS, digital zero, waveform with clipping. Why clipping sounds sharp. Dynamic processors work with a threshold. Volume Suppression and automatic Make-Up Gain. Auto Make-up Gain. Output Ceiling Importance. Headroom Explanation. Soft Clipper. We'll use a reference song by 50 Cent & The Game "How We Do". And finally we'll check how Limiters affect Frequency Response. We'll mention why Mastering shouldn't be only improvement to audio quality but attempt not to change good things in already mixed song. We'll mention L3 Ultra Maximizer. We'll check how Multiband Limiter affects on different frequency ranges depending on what goes through this maximizer. Let's check a kick and snare and what's in between. How does it affect the sound of the Ice Cube vocal? What about upper mid? Low mid? Low Frequencies? How Multi-band processor becomes EQ and why it's harmful for an already mixed audio. We'll create print screens of different moment of the song. Mid Mid. Highs. How it affects on Reverb effect. Brighter Reverb. Darker Reverb. 3D placement in a mix. Closer and farther position in a mix. Sound in your face. Presence and background sound in a mix. How to feel about what a mixer tried to achieve in a mix before you - mastering engineer.

    To attend a free trial Class send email to andrewzeleno@gmail.com My Credits: www.andrewzelenocredits.com If you don't agree about this actual video: No. Priority doesn't even out the frequency response. Don't say bullshit in comments. Multiband limiter will always change the balance randomly. And don't say like it may be useful. Limiter has huge ratio. If you want to affect on the energy of ranges use MultibandCompressor where you can set up ratio, attack, knee. Limiter sucks for this task. And manipulation with frequencies is not the purpose of limiter. For this you have much more from dynamic EQ or Mid-Side EQ or Multiband compressor. In mastering you don't use a limiter to change things because it gives random frequency balance in different moments. Also, have you ever worked as a mastering engineer? Where let's say some Chris Lord-Alge already mixed the song and recording producer approved the frequency balance? If you now will start messing around with that balance nobody will work with you again as with a mastering engineer. The second thing: if you are a home working producer making your own music, to change frequency balance and control dynamics you have an access to your mixing project. If something wrong with your vocal -> fix the vocal. That's it. You don't need to mess around on your master bus with Multi-Band Limiter. So don't use Multi-Band Limiter. Period.
    btw 100% of the whole income from this channel constantly goes to help homeless cats and dogs.
    !!! I use the most fair approach. No prepayments. You get a free trial class which is a real class with my students. If you like it, you enroll. But still no payments in advance. You will pay only after you start the course and you can do it during the first week of a month. Not in advance. Also we have monthly payments. So you don't pay for the whole course. I will be proving that it's the top quality education class by class. 99% of students finish all 9 months of the course. I've been doing it like that for 8 years in a row. Come and see the product (top quality education) for free - it's a fair approach.

      indeed, using a multi-band limiter on a mix always sounds terrible in my experience. however, i do like to use the Waves multi-band limiter on certain sounds, especially synthesized bass.
      for instance, using one on a grouped bass sound, like a huge Drum & Bass bass, with massive subs, heavily distorted mids, and klanky highs. The multi-band limiter is great for pushing those sounds even further and making them even more ridiculous!
      But yeah... never on a mix!!!

    Great information on the video. I use multiband limiting all the time and because of the reason you are saying in the video I tend to use the gain function and the priority function within the plug-ins to allow myself not to have those problems !

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  5 років тому +1

      The problem is you can't stabilize it with Priority perfectly anyway plus it takes much more time to set up. No point to do it while you have better one band limiters with better quality and no time spent on its setup.

    How about multiband clipping then?

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  5 років тому

      Clipping doesn't make a lot of sense in multiband. But Clipping is a different story. It shouldn't suppress the level hence almost no effect on frequency balance. But we know other nuances of clipping.

    This was a great explanation, makes a lot of sense. When do you think it's appropriate to use a multi-band limiter? Obviously this will vary mix to mix, but generally, does it make more sense to use this sort of processing on a buss for instruments or vocals? Or are MB-limiters used more as a rescue measure for poorly mixed material that can't be changed?

    Great tutorial Andrew, thank you. Just have one quick question, during mastering I always use 2 L2s (so one is not working too hard causing some distortion ect), but have a question regarding using limiters during mixing. I`ve noticed that few people use L2 limiters on separate tracks during mixing mostly on snare, guitar solos and adlibs and some backing vocal adlibs. What is your opinion about using limiters during mixing and when do you think you can use limiters best during mixing. Thank you very much for your answer. Lucas

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  5 років тому +6

      Honestly it would take a book to type my answer here. I teach this stuff on the course exactly in the way to have a reason to use a limiter. From what I see how you say it it looks like you care about what other people do instead of listening and finding reasons to have it on some track in a project. Of course you need a lot of vision to see this reason. And if you even know the reason it can spoil some other instruments in the mix. So It's not that easy. Anyway consider that a limiter compresses which changes the form of sound. It can be simply for tone reason. It can be to control exceeding peaks which force a master bus compressor or maximizer to compress more on their side. It can be to polish transients. And so on and so on. But it can be harmful as well. You can loose clarity of a punch sometimes. So it's better using more soft clipper than a limiter. I'd better stop :) It will take forever to explain it.

    Eye opening thinking in reference to the bit about multi band compression akin to 'putting a chaos equalizer on top the master mix as a whole'.. I think that's probably why separating these bandwidths for compression in the Michael Brauer tradition where he's got separate compression busses for lows, mids, highs, and ambiance (adding imaging plugin on after ambiance compression); achieve that dancing compression balance 'in the mix' - like as opposed to producing a photorealistic painting, then going jackson pollock at the end (but with frequencies in our case).. doesn't make much sense you're right...
    The only workaround I might think of is to mix into the multiband limiter from scratch, but then it seems that other automations would be needed to then compensate bc you're still not compressing the whole track as you said.. and adding an L-2 after a L-3 lol... no way!
    It's a high CPU count, but maybe multi-band compressors could be used on a few individual tracks before reverbs and other auxes? Great Content Andrew! Love your work!

    Hi! Great explanation but is it also applicable for multiband compression? It uses similar principles (compresses only specific ranges for whole mix) but a lot of mixing engineers use it on master buses.

    Andrew, interesting video. I have Studio One v 4Pro which has a "multiband compressor". It seems to do similar things to what you describe here. However, there must be a positive reason why Presonus included it. eg. If you have too much bass kick for example, and you put some non-multi band compression on the mix then compressor's reaction to the kick will push down everything -- even pushing down the high frequencies! But with multi-band I leave the mids & highs untouched. Surely that's a benefit?

    Very happy to read this since that was my only limiter. Just bought a couple months back. But I only used it on one track master and then got ozone 8 elements the other day and liked the maximizer better as this problem was why just didnt know till now. But I do like making a send with L3 for just my sub and controlling/adjusting the amount it limits the sub frequencies from the 100-300 frequencies. Same for my mid bass- having a send to control the low mid from hi mid limiting. Then that is sent to master ozone. As it’s my music so planning this was experimenting but came out very nice.

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  4 роки тому +1

      I hope you understand that you use high ratio limiter in L3. You'd better go with a multiband compressor where you can control soft knee, ratio, attack. Which you can't in L3.

    Great video! I'm just here because I wanted to check some "professional engineer"... So I sent him my favorite pro tune (as a reference track) and my mixdown. Finally I received my track damaged by multiband maximizer as I suppose. That received master was one quieter and later louder and lost selectivity of sounds in the song. Basically all my time to make good sounding mix was lost for some unprofessional guy...
    I made my own master using ONLY a little eq and softclipper. It sounding great, loud, without any hearable distortion. So at the end - the most important is to make good sounding mixdown. If the mix is made well then mastering should be easy.
    Multiband compression sucks. Cheers for video! You have a sub! 😎

    I assume it would be the same theory for multiband compression for mastering? Or is it only because limiting is so harsh?

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  5 років тому +2

      Multiband compression can be pretty useful. We are talking here about limiting where fixing things is not a part of its goals. And fixing things is not a area where a mb limiter is the strongest.

    That is a good explanation and is true in this case, but this looks to me like a DYNAMIC multiband limiter. What I mean by that is that the limiter is going to change things depending on the loudness of the current signal which can't be controlled because it is changing too much and constantly disrupts the balance of the mix which you can't compensate for. This is exactly what your tutorial is about I see and you point that out and rightfully so but what I would like to say is that the normal multiband limiter which is not dynamic should act just like a limiter which is not multiband if the curve is set straight. It's response then would be the same constantly all the time depending on how you set the curve to be. To be fair you did use multiband maximizer in your title and you are demonstating this specifically with waves plugin but I think some people could missunderstand this to think that all multiband limiters have a dynamic response which is not true. So if I got this right maybe you should change the title to DYANMIC multi-band maximizer ON A MASTER BUS. Beacuse I would definitely use it on a group bus for some tracks depending on what I want to achieve so less knowledgable people might think that they should apsolutely never use this plugin in any case which I don't think is true. But this is a good tutorial which gives insight into something which a lot of people might not have thought about just like your other tutorials. Good work :)
