- In this video I make a study of Diego Velázquez’s Portrait of a Man c. 1635 from the Wellington Collection in London. I've always admired the simplicity and power of this portrait. If you enjoyed this tutorial and would like to see more please consider subscribing to my channel.

My materials:
Linen panel 12x16”
Oil colors (titanium white, yellow ochre, cadmium red light, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson, burnt umber, ivory black)
Brushes (red sable round no.4 and 8, nylon round no.6, nylon liner no.0)
Walnut oil
"Velázquez's idea of finish in modelling consisted in making his rendering of light logical, convincing, and beautiful. He taught himself not to over-model every bit of a picture because he saw that the range of available values is graduated according to the inclination of real planes and not according to their size or structural importance. To burden a plane with smaller planes, perhaps steeper or equally steep, means frittering away the values that should not only distinguish, but eloquently proclaim important changes of surface. The constant repetition of sharp accidents tires the eye; it is like the false cry of wolf that forestalls the effect of the really momentous occasion."
R. A. M. Stevenson, The Art of Velázquez
It's alive! The knowledge is saved! This is proof that art done with care lasts. We can learn a lot and enjoy this channel thank you Old Dirty Master. ; )
Incredible work. I am absolutely so appreciative of you taking time to show the methods and techniques. It makes far more sense than having it spoken about or from reading in a book. Thank you. PS I love that you do not have music. This is an education. Why does everyone need to be entertained all the time.
Thanks Gael Hillyard:)

I like everything on this channel , looking forward to seeing more in the future. I like period pieces and the work of these masters
reflect the times in which they lived. I've always been partial to the old masters over modern art . And at this point this channel is one of my favorites for it's subject matter choice of work and execution. Thank you , just scribed , and very much inspired. 🌟
Thank you Duan Torruellas

Can I find you on Instagram? Thanks for sharing your palette: a great colors mixing lesson!!! The cool/warm tones of the skin are nailed so grateful!!!!
I call this a "Copy Lite", because it does not delve in deeply and deal with the more profound aspects of Velasquez' skill level and vision.
hey ODM, i noticed you did a few things like a drawing etc before staritng, is this how velasquez painted in real life
only because ive found so little on how to actually paint like him, did you have any recommended reading?
Hi, I don’t know how Velazquez worked/thought but there are a few unfinished paintings by him that hint at his process. Nothing beats seeing the paintings in person if you can. Brown and Garrido’s book Technique of Genius is interesting. Also Harold Speed’s book on Oil Painting has great observations on Velazquez.
Put your name on your channel, you deserve your credits as well, you are a great artist
❤❤❤❤
why don't you create an instagram account to see your works with better quality?
Using the finger is fine, check out Igor Sakharov- that’s brutal. I sometimes worry about his health 😳
This worksp are nicer than the original.
is there gesso on your canvas?
It has some sort of clear coating like PVA to protect the linen.
Good 😮😃🤗👍🏻
This looks like if Sergeant did a copy of a Velasquez. Velasquez wasn't an alla prima painter. You are very talented, why doesn't anyone show the laborious layered techniques of the of masters? Doing a copy is supposed to be about getting into the mind of the artist and understanding the decisions they made and the choices of colour come from how the layers work and how light travels through the paint and back.
hey, i was under the impression the velasquez in this portion of his career was an alla prima painter? Ie, he painted directly, instead of glazing an underpainting? If not how did he paint this? I ask because I`m looking into doing velasquez copies in the near future and would like to emulate his technique as exactly as possible
the account name "old dirty masters" made me laugh :D
studia te stesso nel tuo tempo
