An in-depth video analysis of Kendrick Lamar's new viral album " Damn."
I go from song to song reviewing the themes and overarching messages that are present. I hope you enjoy my point of view and the video itself!
From Wikipedia "Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is an American hip hop recording artist and songwriter. Born and raised in Compton, California, he embarked on his musical career as a teenager under the stage name K-Dot.
Video on that "DNA." Music video in the works....
That popular analyst of the intro blood says
he is talking to lady liberty.
i mean lady justice
Isn't the blind woman in the beginning a representation of the justice system in a way? Lady justice is blind, but her shooting Kendrick is like saying the justice system is flawed.
K1NG FalconGaming very nice concept
I think it was more like she killed kenny because he had done evil. This makes sense as a closing track if you listen to it backwards as listening to it backwards tells a story of kenny's wickedness.
Thats my thoughts as well. I also believe it represents misunderstanding, that since her being blind she just shots him thinking that he was there to maybe rob her, being where he grew up and all. The justice system is blind and misunderstanding. The whole album is from different perspectives, can be easily misunderstood if you miss the message.
That's a good metaphorical concept.
I heard today, from DEHH that maybe it's Lucy from TPAB.
Just saying.
This album has 2 stories, wickedness story and weakness story, listening to it in order 1-14 tells one story, while listening to it 14-1 tells a different story. In one he lives through FEAR, in another one he lives through RAP and dies on the street, becoming just another news story, hence why the order 14-1 ends with the BLOOD's Fox News sample. The cover shows 2 kendricks, a wicked red one, and a weak green one on the back. The reversed parts in the album are the hints of him telling us to "PUT IT IN REVERSE"
Either way, the title works, in his life, growing up with a father and living "right" he still FEARS, because when we die, we leave everything behind, even if you are living right, an act of kindness can kill you as simply as that, as we are constantly reminded "WHAT HAPPENS ON EARTH STAYS ON EARTH!"
even if he lives through RAP, the backwards order, he ends up dead in the street by an act of kindness, dying and leaving everything on earth all the same
That's the meaning of DAMN, from the word DAMNATION, that once we die we are cursed to leave everything behind.
He talks about the book of duteuronomy a lot which in the Bible describes god putting a curse on black people and Kendrick is basically saying if we repent our sins and accept our imperfections we can be saved. So going from front to back he's saved because he accepts his imperfections but back to front he falls deeper into his vices and dies from the blind lady.
Good interpretation I would've never thought of it like that
ezwar99 playing it in reverse means playing song by song in reverse order (from 14th to 1st)
That's why front to back, he puts loyalty before pride, love before lust, and fear of God. thus he is successful. In reverse, his pride before loyalty, his lust before love, and his fear above everything including God are why he dies.
Jon Turner The blind lady is Justice. You know, the blind woman who holds a scale.
kid Capri literally says on the last song "let's put it in reverse"
i get why its called damn. because theres so many fuckibg layers to this album and it feels endless and just basically makes you say "damn"
CYRAX GAMING ehh more like the eternal punishment by god as his uncle mentions on fear that we are constantly being punished.
Yeah I understand what you mean. When I thought of damn I thought Kendrick was interpreting himself. How should Kendrick feel? What does he do? Where does he go now? In my opinion when I read the title damn I thought the word was used to signify that he is lost.
@@victor-2566 Boy get your Carti listening ass outta here😐
also DamnNation
actually he called it damn bc more in the album he talks about being cursed so like hes damned to hell
Hey Thought Family! Sorry that it's late and sorry about the underwhelming amounts of graphics, but those issues aside, I hope you enjoy this weeks video and look forward to my full return to UA-cam. As always, share this video with your friends, subscribe if you haven't already, and follow me on Instagram @omie.abd.
thought Glad to have this channel back!
I think XXX is the Roman Numeral for 30 as Kendrick is turning 30 this year.
might also be SEX
thought i like your thought process.
First off kendrick ain't God the end!!
Album of the year, DAMN.
+Ondřej Machovský I agree!
In my opinion, the lines "is it wickedness? Is it weakness" in BLOOD describes the lady. Her being blind is a weakness, and her killing Kendrick is her wickedness. In the scripture "Deuteronomy" which is mentioned in different parts of the album, it says "The Lord shall smite you with madness and blindness" (if you dont follow god's will) The woman might be someone who has been cursed by God. Or... Is she God? Im still trying to put the puzzle pieces togehther haha.
I thought she was Lady Justice. She is blind, and judges and sometimes wrongly those who are trying to help. Which cuts into the whole police brutality bit by Fox News/CNN.
najma50000 I agree with your first part but I didn't see her as God or anything like that. I just thought it was Kendrick showing how when you're showing "weakness" I.e. helping the blind lady, you'll be overcome by wickedness and there's no middle ground
Her being Cursed by God makes a lot more sense though
Here's my take on it, it's kind of long though. www.reddit.com/r/KendrickLamar/comments/65tg2v/indepth_analysis_of_damn_for_people_interested_in/
It could also be that kendrick with his father, grows up to be wicked and success in life, but without him, he grows to be weak and dies in a gunfight
Damn
your analysis on Pride and Humble blew my mind. I have to go relisten now to see if it applies.
gumdrops27 I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for watching :)
Good shit man. Great editing.
Bandstand thanks bro it's really appreciated
If you don't me asking...what editing software/effects do you use? I'm trying to 1+ my production.
I use Adobe Premiere Pro , Illustrator for the graphics and thumbnail, and After effects for more complicated video effects
@@Bandstand damnnn I watch every video by u now and I never realized u commented. U def 1+ ur production
the people need a collab one day
"While I grew up without father and die in a gun fight"
"So I was taking a walk the other day"
*Do you think the first line of "BLOOD." is his interpretation of he would've died? I know it says "fight", but maybe it's how the fight began.*

Nice video! Kendrick is my favourite artist and you've done a really great job deciphering his songs.
thellamaiscool Thanks! I'm so glad you like it !
Fear, he talks about being 7, 17 & 27. Those might be just ages from memories or events but 7.17.27 is also corinthians & matthew in the bible (not sure if their is a connections) (27 Although she is but one, she can do all things,
and while remaining in herself, she renews all things;
in every generation she passes into holy souls
and makes them friends of God, and prophets;) he talks about being a prophet.
That's why he answers to Metatron & Gabriel.
Damn.
This is my favorite album.
Facts
YES. SPOT ON
Do you think he's dropping another album on Sunday?
Nope
lol why not
MAJOR I hope he is, but the evidence is kinda shaky so I say we shouldn't get our hopes up.
If there's darkness, there's must be a light.
MAJOR my heart is hoping so but realistically I dont think he is :(
PLEEEEEEASE keep dropping this breakdowns. Much appreciated. You earned a new sub.
DJTakesNoRequests Thanks for subbing man, and I'll keep them coming for sure :)
If you listen to the album backwards there's a depreciation slowly growing of what God has given Kendrick Lamar (him being born in the song 'Duckworth' is the biggest). Eventually ending at track 1 he dies because of unfairness in this world. In addition, listening to the album straight forth, there is a believer of God who does his best to make it through hard times and tries his hardest to be a devout religious man, but (specifically referring to the black minority in America) as he lives he goes through mixed emotions that keep his spiritual side detached from him and he dies.
So I believe the message is clear. No matter what we do we are all human and we all die whether we are good or bad.
toooo, frigging DEEP | Food for thought, mind body and soul
Album is a masterpiece
I like the analysis but my understanding is quite a bit different. I could be totally off base here but my understanding of the album is that in the first song Kendrick is shot and killed and the resulting songs that we hear in the album are the thoughts that go through his head right before he dies. That for me explains why a lot of the songs sound so distorted and somewhat psychedelic, it's meant to show him loosing consciousness or drifting away from reality. However, I do agree with you that a lot of the songs are about soul searching, looking for a way for him to undertand his own humanity, but the album now looks at these concepts from a position of hindsight, someone who has lived through all of these events and is now looking back at them with fresh questions and new anaswers to old problems.
Again, I could be toooootaly wrong here but that's the conclusion I came to after listening to the whole thing.
I like this theory
You have a Great Understanding of This Album...Good job Breaking things down....So many folks Dont use their 3rd eye...therefore they are not able to see clearly...the forces that work behind the scenes ....controlling Us from Birth
element can also be viewed as the periodic table of elements that make up all matter. including us obviously
This isnt really completely what this album/songs are about but this is a good breakdown and video 🔥
Damn first time watching this and I'm already a fan. But you missed out on the whole symbolization of the blind woman. Like what does she represent? Plus there is layers to this whole album. I suggest replaying the whole album backwards and forwards to get all of it. I'd love to see what you get from it, otherwise than that you earned a subscriber.
my only critique would be to site the lyrics and how they play into your interpretation but over all good video. You did that with some songs but i would add more to further prove your point
+Jay Thanks for the tip, I will definitely try to keep that in mind and implement that in the future !
Loyalty is played before pride because out of loyalty for yourself, you can get pride, then going into humble he humbles people while FEELING humbled himself.
Going into lust its the lust of having a normal and good life. Love is the love for himself, his BLOOD and the people he just loves. Dont know bout xxx
Fear is the for for the scary u, failing, dying and offcourse GOD.
GOD refers to fear and love.
They are all connected to each other.
This is just what I think about it
Just to mention that Blood. Also may be a reference towards Piru.
Why is j cole on the thumbnail
Interesting analysis
on the track fear he hit it on the head about all the shit my mom's would beat my ass for I admire that alot cause it's a new level of truth and it made me reminisce about the old days and how some of them ass whooping made me into the person I am today.
Well explained.
I think the rewind at the end of the album means he wants you to listen to it from back to front
It sounds like a conflict of the mind, something of which we all do.
You completely missed the message.
on point!
loyalty loyalty loyalty!!👀👀
It was good analysis. But it would've been a lot better if you used a more fitting background music.
Nice
I thought it was that in blood he does and the blind lady rewinds his life
"82 watching right now"
Kendrick is a Israelite
SonsofSolomon Urban Media don't call him black no mo
Black Bear 😂
we wuz kangz n shiet
Black Isn't it ironic that you're black? As in Goku Black lmao
Black
That word is just a color
What's the intro song?
Play the reverse part in fear backwards
If you play the albums backwards, it represents weakness
Yah could just mean being a baby and being young
woah
I thought he was whispering, like.. wtf? but then i realized my volume was down nvm xD
+GoldBugBeats Getting a new mic soon, so this shouldn't be a problem in the future.
I don't fucking know how kendrick entered the mainstream with gkmc and tpab . He is just too bright for this era .
The song xxx is 30 in Roman numerals Kendrick is 30 yrs old and it took him 300 years to realize how USA is
Are the Dark Crusaders real?
I like the message and structure of damn though most of the songs aren't that enjoyable to listen to.
Peep the latest video on my UA-cam channel where I spit to the "DuckWorth" instrumental
Destroying all my nemesis
Yahweh is the way you say Jehovah in Hebrew not God...Yahweh is a name God is a title not a name.

Colleges can see this
Your interpretations are off, well really YAH and DNA are way off base but I dont expect you to get it any way.
So what are the real interpretations?
i think that in dna kendrick is parodying people's excuses for doing bad shit
Hey bro, love the vid!
Maybe u should save up for at better mic :)
lol this is complete bullshit "yah is a word used alot so song is about communication"
wrong about DNA, it's African royal genetics fool
You lost me at yah. AHAYAH is what yah means. The most high
u need a better mic
My rendition of "fear" is better than K. Dot's no question......
Wtf. Kendrick dropped an album and all hell breaks loose. Damn wasn’t even that deep. Y’all are just nit picking and bringing up random shit and trying to find a way to make this album “godly”. Kendrick stans are the worst. It wasn’t even the best rap album of 2017.

Damn bro you got my brain working hard
Tha PotHeadGamer Haha I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for watching!
thought can u do my Reading Honors homework lol
can we all agree that Kendrick Lamar is a great story teller and can actually gets people to open their 3rd eye? Look at us hooked on his music trying to find the meaning to it, like a scholar.
“7,17,27” in FEAR, 7 emphasizes on his childhood, Age 7 , how his mum manifested too many fears in him growing up and the continuing verses will describe how that fear shaped his life. At 17, he talked about things that can get u killed in his neighborhood where he grew up. Like how u can be on the streets going to get something and get shot by stray bullets or how u u can get killed from trying to settle a dispute. So all these Fears from ages 7 & 17 grew up in him and at age 27, He grew accustomed to more fear. At 27, he’s very successful and cuz of his fears from previous years, He’s scared of making some moves and lose all the money he’s made. He went ahead and gave a reference about Rihanna losing millions of dollars after her advisor made some wrong moves, Thus “What is an advisor, somebody that’s holding my checks? Just to fuck me over and put my finances in debts?? I read a case about Rihanna’s accountant and wondered, How did the bad girl feel when she looked at them numbers “numbers being millions she lost”..” and all these fears are reason he’s scared of losing his creativity amongst other things cuz what makes him “Kendrick Lamar” is the creativity especially. So the whole song is about how the fear his mum put in him at age 7 grew with him all the way up to 27 and it’s kinda shaping his live on how to do certain things and kinda decisions he has to take. There’re more explanations to this but i think I’ll end here!!
also the album dropped on 2017
i don't agree with you, but that was an awesome breakdown
shutters we need more people like you agree to disagree but still respect other opinions
shutters what's not to agree with? He basically broke down the different emotions of the album
jfraz1992 listen to it in reverse order and you’ll see why he also said in an interview that DAMN was meant to be about religion
Exactly your breakdown, I'll like to know
Who cares
I think that Kendrick has it so easy now that he can just put an album out and people will turn it into a concept album for him lol. Now I do think there's a reason he ordered the songs like this but by not telling anyone he's able to turn 1 concept into 100 concepts. If he's smart he'll keep his mouth shut and let all the fans do the work for him
TSG KiLLem Twice your laughing about people thinking a certain but your ignorance even funnier! It's called art my friend , your personal perspective and perception are encourage when it come to art
It is not like that. It's a work of art, any reason that people come up with, that is correctly backed by evidence , is a valid reason. You think people are looking at picasso and going like "oh, everybody is making up his reasons behind the painting?" No, what he wanted to do with the album has no effect on our interpretation. If he goes out tomorrow saying that he just did everything random, these kind of explanations will still be as valid, if not more.
The whole concept is how his feelings dont matter because when he dies he wont need them. The most important thing is how he leaves an impact when he dies.
Roddy Rod that is the reason this time around he made a album way more abstract than his previous albums
Roddy Rod if he's smart? K dot finna diss you on his next album you know that right?
I think it's left out of this analysis that he acknowledges himself as a blood descendant of the Israelites and that Deuteronomy 28 contains the curses of disobedience that we are enduring now. For violating the Laws of Yah! That's clearly stated in the song called Yah.
This album is nothing but emotions humans feel from day to day basically. DAMN is Kendricks best album to me. I love this Album. Its very Nostalgic. I miss 2017 so bad lol
Fantastic video! And I like all of your color schemes and editing style too!
+Von W. Thanks sm! I'm glad you like it!
This is why I love his music he makes you really think about shit
I commend u bro fully - i feel there is more to the record ESP far beyond the titles, but this sets a really really solid foundation - one that is more deep than most rap these days - i feel there is still a lot to look at in the lyrics
Summarised Yeah man there is so much more I can say if I took this track by track for sure but This video was supposed to be a full album analysis and it would be wayy too long if I did that haha. If I get enough support for it though, I can do a series on this album and go song to song, but for the moment this is as far as I'm going to go. Thanks for watching !
+thought PLEASE dude I feel like i have a slight understanding of the album but not really at all if that makes sense.
What's the name of the intro beat? Amazing work by the way!
It's about black peoples being brainwashed by the rap game and media into being "black". It ties into what your take is but gets deeper.
ogjoec Thanks for sharing, I'm always looking for more interpretations and yours is very interesting!
Every rap album about that lol
Kams tv not in the last 10 years
Is it wickedness
Is it weakness
You decide
Are we gonna live or die.
I thought he was talking about the police or maybe God.
The first song blood is a skit in which he has a conversation with a demon dressed as an old lady .
I think that DUCKWORTH. Is one of the most important songs in the album to understand it,like it's a central piece, because it makes everything more clear, and is where you start to think about it,it's the final song in the album, but listening to it makes you wonder if it was the first song in the album
I'm really surprised he didn't sample the infamous "DAAAAAMN" scene from friday
Kendrick Lamar Mindfucks with everyone. *DAMN.*
Kendrick dies at the end of BLOOD. The album was dropped on good Friday, the day Jesus was crucified. He's comparing himself to Jesus Chris, a savior.
2017 is Friday 2019 is Sunday so he’s Dropping NATION next year
The old blind woman who kills Kendrick is obviously a metaphor. But what does it represent? Is it a symbol for the fans/the people from the hood, who are "blind" because they are trapped in a tough circumstance that doesn't allow them to see the through, and does the burden that Kendrick feels to help them, eventually kill him? What are your thoughts?
João Oliveira i think it is the media, he tries to help people, but they dont understand and even work against kendrick. Just like the guy who didnt understand the alright lyrics.
The media or just people who listen to his music and dont understand his perspective
João Oliveira it's a metaphor for mother nature (hence why it's a female) and she's blind because it's saying how matter who you are, mother nature can take your life at any time
I see everyone trying to figure out what represents what in the songs, but i feel like every listener will have a different understanding compared to the next person because we have our own interpretations due to what you have struggled with as an individual if you relate to the songs, for example FEAR is a song very relatable to me, i see it as him telling a story of what would go around him as a child and the pressure from the adults in his life putting pressure on him due to their own problems, i can relate to that or so i think its that due to my own struggles i feel relatable to it. BUT someone else could of have a different opinion or receive the message differently but what do i know
First time watching your videos great analysis. My next few listens of the album will be different because of you. If I could give a little critic it would just be to work on your breath control. Learning when to stop and go or just edit out the hiccups but great video nonetheless and I hit the sub button. 👍🏿
Brave HearteGuy Thanks for the tips man! Glad you liked it and welcome aboard!
You didn’t even capitalize all of DAMN. Let me speak to your manager...
Boo hoo 😭
gotta make the volume louder next vid
TechBrah Yup you're right I didn't notice it until I uploaded it but I'll work on that!
thought haven't checked what the UA-cam editor can do recently but maybe there's audio control
I'll look into it, but I think it's a problem with my microphone at the moment
Wow
so, correct me if I’m wrong, but the reason this album in reverse is a story of weakness is because at the end he dies, and the album in normal order is wickedness because at the end he doesn’t die, but is instead reborn, right?
DAMN. is just Kendrick's WUBBA LUBBA DUB DUB
