Combos used:
Wario, (Mercedes-Benz) GLA Car, GLA Tires, Wario Wing
Waluigi, Gold Kart, Slim Tires, Wario Wing

I've done this a bit before, but I do it in high handling combos, and you can even get some mini turbos if you turn really hard for a while
I think I got 1 mini turbo in this haha.
I actually did try some higher handling but my results were not any better, as I predicted. I'm mainly using items to catch up and smart steering is great while using a speed item, so handling wasn't that important.
If I had beaten the challenge with smart steering right away, I might have done no smart steering. In that case I'd go for high handling
@@Shortcat321 I commented before I saw that you switched to a high handling combo! You should try doing it with more mini turbo as well, will will get one on most turns. Still, probably no front-running lmao

I think high Handling Combos actually make it harder to build a Mini Turbo because the car takes longer to Autodrift where as something with terrible Handling will enter Drift quicker. Not to mention higher Handling means your Car will turn more Sharply when Drifting and we all know Sharp turns are kinda rare.
I'm considering running TTs for several Combos on one track.

i remember when i played mario kart wii i didnt know how to drift and only learnt after i stopped playing the game, so as a kid i spent hours and hours trying to get gold in all grand prixs without drifting, took forever but i did end up pulling it off

It's good for really new players since it mostly keeps you on the track and moving but you basically can't do shortcuts and it will get real finicky with where it'll let you go

You know it's a good video when the muscle memory kicks in not even 10 seconds in.
If you can’t drift, smart steering seems objectively better than having it off because the main downside of smart steering is losing out on ultra mini turbos
not being able to take shortcuts its a downside if you're bagging
In this challenge, smart steering is almost always good. It's bad sometimes as I showed. I was going to ban smart steering if I won with it quickly, to up the challenge more.

When I saw ‘NO DRIFTING’, I thought of just steering, like driving normally. When I saw you hopping to make the turns easier, I felt that you weren’t doing this challenge at 100%. I’m glad you changed that almost halfway through the video!

It's useless but very satisfying especially when using Motion Controls. Maybe Nintendo will give it a more competitive edge in the next installment because quite frankly it reminds me of MKDD where you go straight into a drift instead of hopping.
This is one of the "challenges" i ipose on myself when I play with the family.
They get a choice of 3
No Items
No Drifting (which includes no hopping)
1 Lap head start
No items is the easiest to deal with, 1 lap head start just means I get a bullet and instantly catch up, no drifting is 100% the hardest thing, I go from easily winning to sometimes coming 5th
Yeah I did No Drifting with my friends and still Won. I intentionally slowed down as well and trust me, I'm not even that great at MK8D.
I'm not trying to put down my Friends, but just felt like sharing that.

one of my favorite challenges (though it only works well if everyone in the lobby does it) is zero buttons mode. turn on auto accelerate and tilt controls (optionally smart steer) and just wave your controller around like a madman without touching a single button (so no items either). soft drifting is key if you want to consistently win
I literally used to drive and win like this because I had no idea that holding down the button was an option. My brother taught me that drifting is actually holding down the button, and now I've gotten pretty good at it.

Technically if you turn your vehicle with the right amount of speed, acceleration and force and how tightly you turn you can get a mini turbo boost like when you go to drift

Bro it is just like me when i play this game… I suck so much at it I don’t know how to use drifts and mini-turbos. I go in the walls so much. The difference is you really know the game, at a point when you can make comebacks almost everytime. I would love play like you this game

This is how I used to play the wii game back when I knew nothing
when i got mario kart 7, i didnt know anything about the game and i straight up did not know about drifting until i got mk8, and i somehow got all the 100cc cups with 3 stars
@Shortcat - Got a cart for you (or anyone interested really) to try if you've never:
- kart version: Dry Bowser w/ Tanooki Kart, GLA Tires, and Paper Glider
- bike version: Dry Bowser w/ Master Cycle Zero, GLA Tires, and Paper Glider
It's a faster vehicle with still-high acceleration and mini-turbo, plus amazing traction.
Also have this one if you've never tried it either. Similar idea; fast but without stat weaknesses:
- also this one: Dry Bowser w/ Sports Coupe, GLA Tires, and Paper Glider
This one is to dominate on anti-gravity tracks, as opposed to tracks with off-road/icy bits.
i used to do this in online mario kart wii when i was small! i love seeing people lose to someone not using a major technique in the game!
We had a group in the 3DS & Wii U age called Formula Karting, which was basically just this! It was a whole different meta.

mini turbo is useful tho, because you can still generate them with enough turning and the correct lines, so you can incorporate that into the build.

I imagined it would be done by racing 200cc + braking + turning, but then again you'd lose lots of speed that way huh. You'd complete this challenge some day 😌
Smart steering mushrooms is like when that Nascar driver used the wall to speed up as much as possible without losing speed on the turn
I kid you not, back when i was new to Mario Kart, i didn't knew you could drift. So literally every single one of my races was like this. I still managed to win a lot, though.

When I first played mario kart, I didn't know about drifting, so it looks a lot like what you did.

When I was a kid, I had an old DS lite that used to belong to my older brother. It was kinda banged up and the L and R buttons did not work. I learned to play without drifting at all, and I still use X to use items to this day. But yeah, when I was doing 150cc and mirror mode, it was a real struggle without drifting.
That's what everyone I play locally with asks themselves
I don't play online at all, but lately I've been doing a thing in 150 cc races where I try to ONLY use orange or purple mini-turbos, no blue ones allowed to try and get my mini-turbo stats such that the blues are less than %50 of the total. I've had to change my lines on a lot of tracks to make that happen.

honestly smart steering was kind of clutch in a couple places, i wonder if it's possible to use it to benefit in a real match if you see you wont make a turn at your speed
