Thanks for this information. You mentioned my earlier comment from another video. Sorry, I took so long for me to reply and extend my thanks! With this info, I will talk to my local guy about doing this.
The correct transmission oil for a Smart fortwo 453 6-speed automatic DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) is 1.7 L of "Castrol Transmax Manual FE 75W'. It's approved by Mercedes Benz on their gear oils sheet 235.73 aka 'MB 235.73'. It has a pullout gooseneck that makes it easier to pour into the trans directly.
Google "operating fluids mercedes benz" > [first Google result] > Cars > Gear Oil > Sheet 235.73 > Castrol Transmax Manual FE 75W
If you have a 453 Single-Speed Electric Drive (ED) Transmission, it's the same Castrol oil above, just less of it (0.9 L). If you have a 453 5-speed manual transmission, reference sheet 235.10 (link above) for a completely different oil (2.6 L).
Transmissions are picky AF. Please do research and use the correct oil! Like this comment to get it up!
can you make a video on how to change coolant on a smart 453 pls?😁
@@J.PROJECTZ please do...ill be waiting to watch the video..thank you very much..
hello goodmorning..i just want to ask how much torque do i need to put on the transmission bolt to tighten it?and for the oil bolt?thank you..
Not sure on the torque, I just tightened mine by feel. Just make sure it doesn’t leak after u drive it.
Hi. Thanks for sharing. I have a problem with my wife's forfour 453 0.9L (2017) that is driving me nuts, and I want to fix it. When the car is on, at idle only (either in neutral or in the drive gear) the car is making a sort of clunking or knocking sound. It is almost as if one of the engine or exhaust parts is making contact with the frame of the car. The car does have a slight shake at idle, but not really that bad. As soon as my foot comes off the brake (when the engine is under torque) the sound disappears. When I stop and my car is not moving the noise returns. The noise increases when the A/C is on. The noise is a bit subtle and seems to originate from the left passenger side back corner. The sound gets barely drowned out with the A/C on medium. The funny thing is when you open the driver's door to listen the sound is harder to hear than when you are isolated in the cabin. If you or any of your viewers have experienced the same problem and fixed it, please let me know. Thanks a lot!
From what I can gather it sounds like I can use a 75w90 gear oil and be good to go? I also have the 2016 smart fortwo 453 automatic trans.
Yeah I think so, but I’ll use the mt-90 since it’s synthetic and the exact match for the Mercedes oil .www.amazon.com/Red-Line-50304-Manual-Transmission/dp/B000CPCBEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317162556&sr=8-1
@@J.PROJECTZ Royal Purple has a cross reference chart and for a smart car they have one called Max Gear 75W-90. I can actually get that locally so I may try that.
i have an automatic smart 453...it says it only need 1.7 liters of transmission fluid....
@@J.PROJECTZ thank you..i will be using a 75w castrol transmax is that ok?its a mb 235.73 gear oil...
@@alvhinfacun7859 hi, have you change your Auto transmission yet with Castrol and how many miles so far? Thanks!
Hi, is your Smart a Auto or Manual transmission? How is the Redline oil holding up....and how many miles since the change? Thanks!
@@J.PROJECTZ hi, that is great! Before i saw your video, i contacted a few oil companies but only Redline have something to the equivalent to OEM. They recommended this for auto transmission : Red Line 50605 MT-LV Full Synthetic Gear Oil
What say you? Thanks!
@@Nick2JZ yes I did a lot of research and that’s the only oil they recommend other than the oem
@@J.PROJECTZwow now i am confused, but at least your Smart is still good after 10k.
I thought it took gear oil? ATF I was told is not the same thing
Gear oil is for the smart with manual transmission or the 451 model my car is automatic and is a 453
😢 I did some research on the oil and the oil I used is incorrect it should be DCT FLUID NOT ATF 😮
This oil might work .
Valvoline:
FULL SYNTHETIC
DCT
DUAL CLUTCH
TRANSMISSION
Recommended for use in Volkswagen*, Audi*, BMW* & Mercedes Benz* Recommended for VW G 052 182, FFL-4, MB 236.21, MB 236.25
All the marketing buzz words are there but it’s not MB 235.73 approved.
Google "operating fluids mercedes benz" > [first Google result] > Cars > Gear Oil > Sheet 235.73 > Castrol Transmax Manual FE 75W
Which seems like a weird thing but on the back of the bottle it says “Approved by MB 235.73”.
All trans oil isn’t created equal. Something is better then nothing but the correct blood is necessary for a long life 😅
MB number it says its for manual transition.
Yes!! This is considered a manual transmission the way it’s designed just without the clutch pedal. That’s why they recommend gear ⚙️ oil
@abracadabra0105 if u talking about the MB oil yes no one has it that’s why I went with the one in the description the Red line brand
@@J.PROJECTZ ok , got confused bc the one you used it was not correct but I guess it could be used.
You are truly a lifesaver. Without your videos I would be royally screwed. You have helped me out with almost all of the common issues that I have had with my Smart Car. With this being my first time EVER completing services on my car by myself with no help you have literally been my UA-cam Guardian Angel and I can't thank you enough for taking the time out to upload these videos. Please upload more videos if you ever continue to work on the smart car as I also in fact have the EXACT model in color and year as you!
Thanks to you for watching my videos 😎 I’m happy that I can help the viewers like you with the smart car DIY projects .
