Fun Fact: Chain Chomps were designed by Shigaro Miyamoto himself. He said he based them of a time in his childhood where a dog jumped at him and was about to bite him but was pulled back by a chain it was tied to. And yeah Mario 3 was the first game to have one. Funny story really
According to the Super Mario Wiki, you are correct @DGR, chain chomps debuted in SMB3. They were inspired by Miyamoto almost being attacked by a dog that was held back by its chain.
...until Dave remembered he had the power inside him all along. If DGR can beat a tricky team precision level like that, he can definitely beat Spiny Control.
23:00 Miyamoto invented the Chain Chomp, he was inspired by an event when he was little: A dog wanted to mold it but luckily it was attached to a chain that prevented it from reaching him
I believe Miyamoto did the chain chomps himself. He based the idea off of a dog that he had to go by for errands that would always charge and bark until it was snapped back by it's chain. He then reduced them to really little more than a black charging ball with teeth to boil down and encapsulate the general idea to its very basics
Chain Chomps resemble dogs for this reason: When smb3 was coming up with new enemy ideas, Miyamoto remembered something. When he was a kid, he was walking home from school when he saw a dog. The dog was so ferocious looking so he stayed away from it. But it actually escaped from it’s post while Miyamoto was walking and attacked him! Somehow Miyamoto got away but he never forgot that experience. The reason they are metal is because it makes them look more ferocious and scary. Also, if you wait long enough by a chain chomp in smb3, it’ll escape from its post resembling when the dog escaped it’s post.
About the checkpoint argument... you are correct Dave, however, those who make long and hard levels and don't put checkpoints' thoughts are **exactly**: HAHA! GIT GUD! (EDIT: should've watched until 26:49 xD) Checkpoints are for 10yo! ...but a better argument for it would be how much more rewarding it is to be a very hard level in one go.

Wasn't the idea of the chain chomp brought up by Miyamoto himself because he once encountered a dog that got hold back by a chain and he wanted to include it? I don't remember exactly anymore.
Interesting trivia about Chain Chomps: I’m pretty sure they were actually originally intended for the Zelda series, but Mario 3 came out first. Also, insert obligatory “git gud” here for me because I don’t feel like it.
5:02 could placing the pow on top of the muncher then hitting the block to get the nut suit. Then flying the nut suit off the pow block from where it is placed here give enough extra distance?
To answer the question in 1:54, no. Only a tiny portion of UA-camrs - and other people who post on other social media platforms - still say the word "Sus". This is only to reference Among Us memes. No one ever references the game itself without the memes any more.
Miyamoto came up with the idea for chain chomps. He based them on his neighbor's dog who chased him a lot as a he was a kid. Yes, the chain chomp first appeared in Mario III. You are right.
…So but why you gotta yet again and always be unnecessarily redundant? …It’s a…thwompening?…Nah……I like a thumping. I agree to checkpoints, especially if you can get the first half every time, way past a fluke check by that point.
Chain chomps I think are a decent design, just poorly coded. A ball and chain that tries to eat you is fine, what I never liked was how they just "randomly" go in one direction. It's not like they always try to lunge towards mario. Much like the Hammer Bros, it's the random AI that makes dealing with them so hard.
Honestly, I actually really enjoy uncleared levels that come from the stream. However, I think you should always cover whatever is necessary to keep it from being sniped. 99.99% of your community is lovely and would never try to snipe levels but it only takes one butthead to ruin it. I'd bet that they may not even be "part" of your community so much as butts trying to ruin other people's days.
Isn't the chain chomp from walking home from school and seeing a big dog on a chain as they walked by? And a ball and chain is a way of limiting somethings mobility so combine those two things and you have chomper on chain? Forget who it was but think that's the story.
You as a Nintendo fan, I'm surprised you don't know the classic story of the origins of the chain chomp! I see it in another comment, so I will not repeat lol.
The thing about check points. Is that if the person that makes it has to ONE SHOT IT. Then the person that's trying to beat it should have too. That's FAIR
7:44
9/16ups "We're missing 5 one ups"
This reminds me of the 171IQ that Dave always talks about
Absolutely savage
Dave was riding the struggle bus today. 5 missing one ups... and also saying p-switch instead of pow
@@elappo2974 ayo when did he say p-switch instead of pow block?
5/7 Perfect math.

nice fact
That’s why it sound like a dog

Yeah real "funny" 😆
Confirmed 👍

And they break free after like 50? Bounces without hitting mario
@@MyBiPolarBearMax or if you ground pound their stump down :)
It's correct
Which is also why they're Bow Wows in Zelda
@@WillACarpenter yep, in fact Zelda was the place they got designed for first.
"The real battle starts right now." That's right, Craig.
That Modest Mouse reference was a deep cut. I hadn't heard of them in ages!
I love the "missing 5 1UPs." Then ironically finds 5 before realizing his mistake.
7:45 DGR's math skills at their finest
I’ve been binging this series for the last week or so and I’ve been loving it! So happy to see it’s still going strong 😄
Seriously yes! This is the best thing to watch before bed, it's so good and non offensive
Whoa, that chain chomp level was really spiny. You showed a lot of control to beat it.

I'm sure the chain chomps can relate, actually... :D LOL

I highly doubt that since [YOU ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING] in the team precision level.
I think that a group of Thwomps should be called a "Thumping of Thwomps."
I was thinking of that too
I would call a group of Thwomps an avalanche.
I prefer a squish of thwomps.
I was thinking a colosseum of thowmps

He gets sniped even when not streaming! Some FBI dude is monitoring his internet and playing mario just to ruin his day.
Dave "I have a 171 iq"
Also Dave "9+5=16"
I'm sorry Dave! 😭We're working on it!
Including checkpoints can actually make the player feel more invested, like they are losing the checkpoint if they give up.
Lost cause fallacy
Looks like SMM2 still hasn’t left DGR’s switch! 🎉
That Garfield Among Us jumpscare at 2:03 dealt me 50 points of psychic damage
A group of Thwomps is a Crash. A group of Whomps is a roadblock.
Finally, DGR said the phrase "nut jump". SmallAnt would be so proud.

18:06 a moment of silence there. Though, you did well, Dave 🙂
It was Shigeru Miyamoto who made the chain chomps like that
"I'm missing 5 1-ups"
Lol no, you were missing 7.
Dave is so smart when he saw 9/16 mushrooms and said he needed 5 more he was foreshadowing collecting 5 later with the hidden block ones
Interesting trivia about Chain Chomps: I’m pretty sure they were actually originally intended for the Zelda series, but Mario 3 came out first.

11:50 is one of those "People who don't know - People who know" moments.
Awesome run. The TP and Chomp levels were great.
Uncleared Christmas themed level should be good
I think you were on to something placing the POW on the muncher.
I just loved when you added the slowed down version of that song at the end though
these are the highlight of my Mondays love them so much for the entertainment.
Dave, it's a "Cornucopia of Thwomps".
18:40 Know what’s even better than a music level? When the person playing it STFUs so that you can actually *hear* the music
Love your videos Dave keep doing what you're doing!
I humbly submit that it's a "grimace" of thwomps.
I don’t know if there is a term for groups of Thwamps, but I put my vote in for a “cascade of thwamps”
There are hurds, groups, murders, schools, smacks, covens, pods, and gatherings.... I humbly suggest "A Pound of Thwamps"
5:02 could placing the pow on top of the muncher then hitting the block to get the nut suit. Then flying the nut suit off the pow block from where it is placed here give enough extra distance?

I think the word Dave was looking for there is apex. But definitely not precipice.
I didn't expect him to actually find a sweet spot.
I had the idea for the first level but couldn’t quite perfect it would be a really cool puzzle level based on dev exits
a pound of thwomps

I hereby declare a group of thwomps a "Wall" of thwomps.

Edit: Oh no! I hope they can fix it.
I wonder if there was something above the pipe in the subworld

I'm pretty sure chain chomps first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, but some sort of similar enemies were in Donkey Kong Jr.
…So but why you gotta yet again and always be unnecessarily redundant?

A group of Thwomps is called a Thump. I don't know it just sounds good and dad jokey.
SMB3 is indeed chain chomps first appearance.
The level viewer still works. There were two hidden blocks with 1ups just before the claw section in "tyhyhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy6"

The music level makes me think of Dragon Warrior music from the NES.
a group of thwomps is a thwampede
