The monetization in the game is horrible, but i don't think foam stars is that bad of a game. It is really fun an it feels like it took inspiration from many other games, but still came out unique enough to be considered its own thing. I find comparing it to splatoon to be unfair as it is not the same thing.
I will admit that "rubber duck party" and "tower control" are very simular game modes, but many shooter games have a mode like this present in their games that all have slight differences (overwatch 2 has push, team fortress 2 has a push mode, and even paladins has a push mode). Otherwise "smash the star" and "happy bath survival" from foamstars are diffrent from "turf war", "splat zones", "rainmaker" and "clam blitz" from splatoon.
Foamstars isn’t terrible but it’s not as good as Splatoon either. The game lacked polish. Cheesy AI announcer, visuals could be cleaner along with a more memorable art direction, but the game modes are fun. I won’t be paying for gear in this though.
Heres my two cents for the game. Yeah, when you look at the bundles, it's a bit much. However, you can just buy things separately if you want to buy skins. Theres only like two things from the bundle you can't buy separately (a board and a rainbow pet recolor). When i think of the monetization, I like to compare it with other games. CoD and Halo have monetization with paid experiences. 20$ for a character skin you can't see all the time vs. this game character skins is 10$, that you can see it all the time. This game is worth it more than these games, honestly. Gameplay wise, it's fun. It has some inspirations from Splatoon, but it's not entirely the same. Having an alternative Splatoon game that you don't need a Switch to play is great. There are some connection issues, but it isn't too bad. There is something to grind for, which are silver and gold skins (for character and boards), so not all skins are locked behind a pay wall. Also, there are some other cosmetics you can earn without buying anything, too. Battle pass, there is one. It's 6$ with 40 tiers of stuff. It has an overwatch 2 situation where you can buy a character instantly or wait till tier 31 to get it for free. However, unlike overwatch 2, it doesn't take 3 weeks of straight grinding to get the character (i know cause it took be only 3 days of casual play). Score 8/10. Couldn't care less of the monetization cause it's a fun game. Musics is good, and you can customize your base a bit (which all customization is free). The game might stay alive if it either goes free or if xbox and pc players could play the game, too.

Foamstars isn't a bad game. It's a game that's just playing it too safe imo. There's a sort of genuine optimism in the game with an expectation of it being a social experience(club like lobbies, an incredible party OST, etc) along with a casual fun shooter. The characters are cheesy but there's something there that shows the team had fun with it all. It's as non offensive as it can be while encouraging a competitive mindset. I don't think it's fully polished yet but it's a fun game that could potentially be the foundation for something more, if they're willing to be brave and explore more with missions/matches/maps.
I tried this game for a couple of days, so far I'm having a good time: music is great, characters are cheesy and "cringe" but in a funny, harmless way, the shooting is a bit chaotic but I got used to it, and overall I think there is a TON of potential to this game...but it's a square enix game, they're notorious to be ultra greedy, and if this game doesn't make the octillions they want, it won't last very long. A shame when that will happen, because I can see it having its own niche of players. I definitely did not like Splatoon, but I surprisingly liked this one.
Game might look like a Splatoon clone but it’s nowhere near the game. Splatoon’s gameplay felt like an actual gun game, Foamstars’ gun game is just playing with, for a lack of a better term, a Grenade Launcher. Battle Pass is fine, never have I ever see BP below $10, but still meh to buy. Ranked are the worst. The system are so atrocious that it’s very difficult to rank up unless you have a friends to play. Matchmaking are bad as well. I’ve been seeing a lot of 3-4 party against solos in Ranked more than the normal playlist that I just avoid Rank altogether once I got my Trophy.
I was just in a discord call and I was just surfing in the Foam and trying to grind rails. One of the problems of the game is it takes a long time to reload and unlike Splatoon we cannot dive into the foam to reload. Why can’t we truckload ? Somebody call up the developers tell them we need trick loading and tracking speed boost. What I mean is doing kick flips to reload gun and doing backflips and turns in the air probably ramped off the foam and getting speed boost
Already scored 7 from player reviews. And really... video onm the literally first 6 reviews that dropped out? The game is free to play, you need to have PS+ to play it in the first place, and it is free if you have it :D
You know it’s not a good sign, that the same day this came out, Square Enix dropped the State of Play and Demo for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, one of their most highly anticipated games for this year, arguably their most anticipated. Despite that launch party and decent beta, It’s kinda like they didn’t have the confidence for it, so I guess they had to use basically their BIG Property Franchise being Final Fantasy let alone Final Fantasy VII to act as a coverup/scapegoat/damage control or something
I was a hater at first but it looks really fun. Havent played it yet but the snowboarding mechanic looks fun. This was square enixs win to squander. They couldve had a good game but seems they messed it up. If they'd had good matching and copied splatoon a bit more, i think they couldve done well. I also think the hills need visual rings like topography maps. At first it was hard for me to see depth.
The game looks really fun, but the microtransaction!?!?! Lol these things cost more than the game. It should have just been F2P at this point. I'll go back to the finals until they either sort things out or the game dies. but really if you have PS+ try it out, if you like hero shooters you'll have a good time with it, but don't buy it outside of that window.
Whats funny ti me is I hear reviewers give surprisingly high remarks on foamstars up until release, and now its panned. Conversely, i heard reviewers speak about the lack of uniqueness in helldivers and viewed it as competent but nothing special or worth going to over better predecessors, kind of mediocre, and now it's doing pretty well.
@Drstrange3000 yeah, I'm on the same page now. Games media has become an echo chamber that's somewhat disconnected from the much larger market of actual game players. Lately they have been very unified in one opinion or the other and it's just plain wrong. Eff em.
If this game survives a year, I can see it looking a whole lot better. It has a great foundation (gameplay, music, aesthetics), it just needs a whole lot more content AND to not lock it behind a paywall.
Personally I think the game is really fun I honestly think its better than Splatoon in certain regards I much prefer the more anime looking human characters over the ugly squid kids and surfing for movement and finishing people off feels great. My only real gripe is the networking seems quite bad I've been DCed quite a lot from games for no reason, EVERYTHING is behind a paywall this game gives you jack for free not even basic stuff like different outfit colors and yeah its a bit too visually busy at times making it hard to really see whats going on but I'm starting to get used to it. Overall I think it's got a great foundation don't agree with the very low scores at all but they definitely need more maps and characters to keep it interesting.
Every game Nintendo has as first party IP every publisher and Sony, Xbox can't help themselves this is Splatoon with human and now trying to make money to win come on can no publisher make games anymore bro this is bad now I see why Nintendo don't like for no to touch there IP I see why Nintendo it's like if Nintendo don't make a new that make sense let's be real, Eldin ring, pal world, now this garbage why I don't know no more
@@CAIORAZ Aw. Poor baby got offended when they were called out. Every game with micro transactions does this. But you needed to find a way to hate on the game anyways. Nobody asked for your opinion bud.
OJ I can't find your spawncast pre-show listed. If I don't listen live I don't see it on your channel and haven't for a while. Anyone else having this issue?
I'll give you guys the Micro transactions but the great thing is that it's LITERALLY cosmetic, you don't have to buy them and if you choose to, let's be honest you'll do it regardless of the price, whales pay for however much in EVERY gatcha. Is that right for them to charge that much? Well when it's free they have to get some money out of it so that's why they charge that much, I personally ONLY have the season pass and that's 6 USD, but I think the real issue with the game is the same with all games nowadays. People want EVERYTHING to be so different and unique and if it's not they say "it's just X game" or "Y game is better " a reason why I prefer this game over splatoon is the theme of the game isn't just covering area and taking out opponents to get more time to do so, there's actual setups with characters and builds to be able to make your team work better, of course with Splatoon you have the different weapons but with it in a hero shooter idea, being locked to skills and characters it's easier to balance because you can have X character with Y character they'll be unbeatable in Z setting in comparison to this weapon is strong, well what is so strong about it, is the coverage too fast? Does it do damage too fast? Does it refill to quickly? If you have another weapon is that the reason why it's that strong? Is it actually because that weapon is that strong and because of it, this is now looking strong? It makes for a game with longevity if they choose to keep this game up imo, but if everyone just wants it to be splatoon it's just gonna get review bombed and those that take whatever someone else says for granted won't play a game they already weren't going to. That being said people do think that this is just splatoon and have played it like that and then gotten upset that it's actually a different game... There's a difference between the two games and it just has ink on one side and foam on the other. Also Also the Square Enix game that got cancelled that you're thinking of was NOT a battle Royale but it was a fighting game it was Dissidia NTD and that's because they changed the entire formula that they had in the first two games and imo ruined it with that game so myself and a LOT of people who played it just left it alone, just because a game has an open map doesn't a Battle Royale make, it was 3v3, not 100 nor was there a timeline that makes the area get smaller or random pick ups that you can use to fight with or even a any areas that give you real abilities to hide seeing as you can fly and run up walls easily and lock onto people without an issue at all. an arena battler would have been a better definition
I know this may not matter, but I wonder how many ideas in this game would make an improvement or breakthrough before getting tossed off in the development stage? And is there an equal amount of men and women in the dev team?
Give this game crossplay and i think it could eventually grow. Ironically it would appeal to switch kids the most. Unfortunately im sure theyll keep it on PS5 till it dies.
I played about 2 hours of it. Pros: The bright colors, the music, the character design. Cons: I have a hard time figuring out who I need to attack and who is on my team, because every other match, you are a different color. It needs an option to always show the enemy as one color. On top of that, there is just a lot going on. Very chaotic. I know this is a "games as a service," but there is not much to do. I don't know how to improve it. Something is off, and I don't know what it is. My score is a 6/10. I can't see myself playing this a month from now.
Played about 10 hours and I can say ur very right here. Very beautiful game, the aesthetic and characters pop, and the music is very catchy. But The colors is a big issue for me as well. So much visual noise on screen. I had to stop a few times to realize what team color I was. And some of the map designs drive me up a wall. The BP itself is very easy to progress so I’m just enjoying the game for what it is right now (trying to unlock Mel T) but with the lack of marketing I don’t see this game lasting longer than Rumbleverse or knockout city which is unfortunate cause it’s basically splatoon on a different platform entirely
@@tylertruthseeker4034 It is a con. People potentially not being able to tell colours apart is why Splatoon has the option for a specific colour match up. Nothing about "get gud", but I guess you had to be a toxic Gamer.
Looked interesting till I saw preset characters, splattoon just hits all the boxes with style & free battle pass every season, this game was a pass for me from the start.
I love this game, it has so much charm and great characters with stories to tell, but as you said in the video the microtransactions and very little in terms of progression has pushed me away from playing it. I want to get into this game, I want to see it succeed but goddam are those microtransactions really off putting
I have been enjoying the game myself, but I will be the first to admit that this game is not perfect. But let's keep in mind that it is still early before it releases on other platforms. As for the whole Splatoon clone controversy, I don't get that impression. If anything, this game is a clone of... Bubble Bobble. Yes, Bubble Bobble. I mean think about it. You trap your opponents in bubbles, and then you finish them off by bursting those bubbles. The only thing missing is the fruit when you burst those bubbles.
Square enix needs to stop it with the quick cash grab initiatives. But i guess they did recently announced that they were going to focus more on the big titles to save itself from compromising its quality and reputation so, time will tell. I understand the desperation in this market and fomo of seeing how other mobile and battle royales are making big bucks. I'd rather they innovate and do something new than to try to jump onto existing bandwagons
The game is hella fun once you get the movement down. Soa is the peak of mobility in this game. Love splatoon but the it always ends with people running the same builds. Foam stars at least has preset abilities and weapons for each character, so matches aren't always samey I'll stay with both games

Ain't no way you're calling portable PCs a Switch killers
No that’s called being a Nintendo fanboy…
Not their most

I was a hater at first but it looks really fun. Havent played it yet but the snowboarding mechanic looks fun. This was square enixs win to squander. They couldve had a good game but seems they messed it up. If they'd had good matching and copied splatoon a bit more, i think they couldve done well. I also think the hills need visual rings like topography maps. At first it was hard for me to see depth.
I just got Splatoon 3 on the last sale. It's a blast and one of the most refreshing shooters I have played in a long time
too bad it's a nintendo exclusive

Exclusives exist for a reason.
whenever a game has mtx, it kills any interest i may have had in it
Especially if you can easily buy 2 indie games for 1 skin. 🤣

Being a video game company?
Whats funny ti me is I hear reviewers give surprisingly high remarks on foamstars up until release, and now its panned. Conversely, i heard reviewers speak about the lack of uniqueness in helldivers and viewed it as competent but nothing special or worth going to over better predecessors, kind of mediocre, and now it's doing pretty well.
I don't trust most UA-camrs anymore. I just follow my opinions mostly.
@Drstrange3000 yeah, I'm on the same page now. Games media has become an echo chamber that's somewhat disconnected from the much larger market of actual game players. Lately they have been very unified in one opinion or the other and it's just plain wrong. Eff em.
Should have put that energy into a blitzball game smh
These reviews are not surprising at all.
i personally really liked this game (even more than splatoon) and Ive been playing splatoon since the first one so this is a pretty big deal to me
Every game Nintendo has as first party IP every publisher and Sony, Xbox can't help themselves this is Splatoon with human and now trying to make money to win come on can no publisher make games anymore bro this is bad now I see why Nintendo don't like for no to touch there IP I see why Nintendo it's like if Nintendo don't make a new that make sense let's be real, Eldin ring, pal world, now this garbage why I don't know no more

That has been a thing for decades now. Super Mario Bros. also sparked more platformers. Nothing wrong in doing your own take on a genre.
That is not nickel-and-diming, they're straight up charging you $10 and 20 of dollars for the customization.
That’s better than most games and it’s free to download instead of $70 for the base game then the paid customisation

Maybe i missed that
I'll give you guys the Micro transactions but the great thing is that it's LITERALLY cosmetic, you don't have to buy them and if you choose to, let's be honest you'll do it regardless of the price, whales pay for however much in EVERY gatcha.
Umm Ninjala exist which is technically the knock off of Splatoon. Ironically also exclusive to Switch.
False
Ninjala is NOTHING like Splatoon.
Ninjala's design is alittle like splatoon but thats about it. Gameplay wise they're completely different.
I know this may not matter, but I wonder how many ideas in this game would make an improvement or breakthrough before getting tossed off in the development stage? And is there an equal amount of men and women in the dev team?
When I heard Miracle Groovin for the first time in the tutorial I had the small thought of "maybe I was wrong about you" (I was, game fun)
I love this game.
Give this game crossplay and i think it could eventually grow. Ironically it would appeal to switch kids the most. Unfortunately im sure theyll keep it on PS5 till it dies.
Loving the game so far not been back on Splatoon since this came out
Also the mico transactions are cosmetic only so you don't need to buy them
Pony Copium
Lol bro Sthu
So most people are upset they're too broke for a battle pass
I'm glad to hear I am not alone with not knowing who I was supposed to be attacking. @@jakilla23
Thats not really a con, its more of a you problem. You just need to get better at knowing your team colors. Get good.
@@tylertruthseeker4034 It is a con. People potentially not being able to tell colours apart is why Splatoon has the option for a specific colour match up. Nothing about "get gud", but I guess you had to be a toxic Gamer.

It feels like it was made by AI. I tried a match, it disconnected. I tried the story, that was boring. Will delete.
I won't feel bad if this game flops, especially if it's built on the back of micro-transactions.
I really like this game. And I liked Splatoon 2 a lot too.
I love this game, it has so much charm and great characters with stories to tell, but as you said in the video the microtransactions and very little in terms of progression has pushed me away from playing it. I want to get into this game, I want to see it succeed but goddam are those microtransactions really off putting
Every review is very interesting lol. I’d just play more splatoon 3
It was ok for a game that comes at no additional cost. Played and enjoyed it for two days then dropped it.
I love the game.
Now i know splatoon 3 is Dying
God never thought I’d see the day Nintendo fans being the most toxic gaming community. 😂
I'll give this game a 8 out of 10
It’s the kind of game to shut down studios.
Quick cash grab for a game that took years to develop?
Okay.
This seems normal, *it would have been a "banger" if it was a free mobile game instead.*
