    For everyone that has been asking where to buy good futons outside of Japan, I found a place that sells authentic hand-made Japanese futons abroad. These are actually 100% cotton so they are the real deal: goo.gl/iOhUf4

      From my experience of living in Cambodia for two years, I realized how little we really do need. I suppose even in this apartment I have so much more than many people in the world are able to have. Thanks for your comment =)

      I agree, except for the kitchen. If I had a 300 sq ft apartment, 200 of that would be kitchen! Cooking and baking is very Zen for me, especially the preliminary preparation. I'd need more space for the bowls, cutlery, cookware, stove and oven. Having family and friends over for meals is one my greatest joys.

    This was a beautiful minimalist house tour. I just started a journey of minimalism. For me this is going to be a long journey as I have a family of 4 and we have accumulated many things over the years. I just started in my closet and master bathroom and already the peace and calm has trickled into the other areas of my home. I grew up in a home that was border line hoarder. My mother and father still to this day have thousands of stacks of papers, old rusted vehicles that don't run, piles and boxes of clothes and so much furniture that it can't even fit in the house so it is stuffed into the garage and sheds. Recently I was over there for a visit and decided that I do not want that kind of a lifestyle either. I realized that the excess in my home was crowding my ability for spiritual rest and creativity. Keep up the great videos.

      Thanks for sharing your story! Sounds like you have already made some good progress. My mom is super sentimental and I also have other family members that don't seem to mind floor to ceiling clutter. It took me a few years to fully unlearn these habits. It isn't a race though and I found it can become a bit addicting. Best of luck on your journey :) :)

      Jessica Durrant one day I decided to get rid of all the "sentimental things" that crowded my house and I have never felt better walking into my home. so simple and clean and not overwhelming to the eyes. there's nothing like it! the rule to go by is if you havent used it get, rid of it. if you dont need it, get rid of it. if its in storgae for the "maybe one day ill use it", get rid of it! keeping tables clear of cluttered decorations everywhere you look is def. a plus too. Goodluck 😄

    I really like this apt more as well. I'm moving soon to a studio apt and will be touring some units that are either 285 or 385 sq ft and now see that larger space doesn't always mean better.

    Oh this new apartment definitely wins the race. It looks so much more clean and peaceful because of the new floors and walls. The bathroom looks great as well. I think Marie Kondo would be proud, there is not one unnecessary item. I can only imagine what kind of peace of mind comes with such a clean space.

    Thank you for posting both videos! So interesting to see how others' live. As I look around my rooms, there are many things out of place. I'm lazy and tend to just put whatever wherever without tidying up regularly. Besides this bad habit, I have many more 'things' than you do. Your lifestyle is helping me to think about changing the way I do things. I do feel best when my surroundings are tidy and organized. I actually feel better about myself, and more uplifted, and even more energetic. Thank you again for sharing.

    For the heavy box, you can attach wheels on the bottom so that you can move it easily. or put furniture pads on the bottom. That will help it glide on the hardwood floor.

    it is 2 am right now and i am watching this video after watching the one at the previous home. Fact is, that I too am moving into a new place I had made a list of all the things i'd buy off amazon or ikea to beautify my place. but after watching this, it all seems useless. Less is definitely more. this was a brilliant upload, Tara!

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  8 років тому

      +harsh bhatia Haha! Get some sleep :) I'm happy you were inspired by the video. I usually wait until after moving and setting up what I already have to make a new purchase. It gives me a better feel of what is lacking as every space is different. You may still need to make a trip to IKEA for a thing or two but no rush. For this apartment I needed a new TV stand, a shelf for the cabinet, and a few boxes for organizing. Best of luck with your move!

      Samantha Esra You can also simply put your clothes on the hanger and hang them in your closet. Just push away the other clothes for a little room. I do this after washing them in the washer machine with a spin cycle. Water doesn't drip on the floor.

      I live in Massachusetts and I hang my laundry on those indoor drying racks. I have 2 and I think I bought them at Walmart or Target. Most of my things dry overnight. Sometimes I put them in a dryer for a few minutes to soften them up. Clothes last a lot longer not being dried in a dryer.

      +Elmo “and” Lynne Thank you! It is funny because my husband doesn't consider himself to be a minimalist at all, but coincidently, I think he does have less stuff than me so it works out. He is supportive of the change because he knows how messy I was before and it was actually him wishing I was tidy. But after reading Marie Kondo's book, I changed overnight and now I am the more tidy partner. It is quite funny to us looking back. Thanks for the lovely comment Lynne!

      +punkt.punkt.punkt. Thanks for taking the time to write such s thoughtful comment. I agree, I was worried about natural light bc this apartment only has the one window.. But actually the lights are so modern I can control them to imitate different times of day with white or orange light at varying quantities. This is a great feature for me. Even on a rainy day it can seem sunny in here. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. Have a great day!

    Do you do a lot of home cooking? I feel like that kitchen would be more stressful than helpful, though I guess it depends on how intricate your dishes are.

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  8 років тому

      +tgime1 We do cook three meals a day. The chopping board on the fridge can come down over the sink to make a little more work space but it is tight. We have just learned to adapt and none of our dishes are too incredibly complicated. More so than the size, my biggest complaint is not having an oven. But it is fine for now! +TaraWhiteTalks I'm not sure what my square footage is, but it looks about the same size except I have a small balcony as well. It's the biggest place I've had in Korea but I miss my place that was actually the smallest. I feel like I own more things in this apartment bc there isn't any storage space, so I've resorted purchasing some open shelving, quite the challenge.

    I definitely like the nicer (non-plastic bathroom) - LOL, and this one gives off a nice vibe a lot more. The kitchen is smaller, but you can't have everything! I do like that the small kitchen is more private, whereas the bigger kitchen had a bit of windows for people to peer in. You make a beautiful home no matter where you go. I am already a minimalist but will incorporate more Japanese simplicity into my home now - thank you.

Yea, if it hadn't been for other UA-camr's posting their home tours I'm not sure I would have gotten as far in my KonMari/minimalism journey as I have. It is great for us visual people to see what others have done, good and even not so good so we can get ideas. I also liked her second book.. Spark Joy.. +Jady A. Futons are pretty much everywhere in Japan, but I think they can be a lot harder to find outside. I would check Amazon.com for "shikibuton"/futon. My main tip would be to get a high percentage of natural fibers inside. To answer your question though, my boss provided ours. I don't know where they are from but they are 50% wool. Hope that helps and I'll have to check your channel out bc I love videos on minimalism :) Thanks for watching!
