Chernivtsi: "Little Vienna" in Western Ukraine

  • Chernivtsi is a city in Western Ukraine with a large architectural and cultural heritage from the times of the Habsburg Empire. Back then known by its German name Czernowitz, the city began to flourish in the late 18th century. The German language became the lingua franca due to the influence of the Habsburgs and the large Jewish population. Chernivtsi was the capital of Bukovina - a region covering parts of present southwestern Ukraine and northeastern Romania. Literary figures including the late 19th-century novelist, travel writer and journalist Karl Emil Franzos published their works about the city and the region in German.
    The architectural heritage of the city is very well preserved. Most of the buildings in the city center originate from the late 19th and early 20th century, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire built beautiful houses that resembled the architectural styles of contemporary buildings in Vienna - mainly Art Nouveau style.
    Chernivtsi also became a center of both Romanian and Ukrainian national movements. It became part of Romania after 1918. The large mainly German and Yiddish-speaking Jewish population of the city perished during W W II. From 1945 to 1991, Chernivtsi was part of the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union. During that time, the architectural heritage suffered greatly from decay and neglect. In 1991, Chernivtsi became part of present Ukraine.
    In recent years, many of the once dilapidated buildings in the city center have been restored. Today, Chernivtsi is a colorful city with a rich architectural and cultural heritage.

      @tears3144 Why should we give Transylvania to a group of people who migrated in Europe in 10 century? They don't even belong to the Pannonian plain. Our ancestors (dacians) lived here. Take a look at the dna. Romanians, bulgarians, albanians and people from yugoslavic countries are among the first europeans. The hunter-gatherers. Our ancestors occupied the area for thousands of years

    Thank you, Habsburg Monarchy, for breaking a part of Moldova/Romania, for naming it "Bukowina" and bringing in massive Ukrainian immigration, which later led to Stalin requesting this ancient Moldovan/Romanian land to integrate it to Soviet Ukraine! The Fantana Alba massacre prerequisites were set in 1774, when Austria broke this region apart from Moldavian principality.

      Chernivtsi is a Ukrainian city. Look at the population census of Chernivtsi and Bukovina under Austria-Hungary. The vast majority of the city's population were Ukrainians/Rusyns

    • @ionbrad6753
      @ionbrad6753 3 роки тому +7

      @@erio7942 Precisely! Looking at the Austria-Hungary several censuses one can see the gradual diminishing of the Romanian population percentage and the massive influx of the Ruthenian population. Examples: Year 1860, 9177 Romanians and 4133 Ukrainians. Year 1880, 6431 Romanians and 8232 Ukrainians.
      More, in year 1774, at the Austrian annexation of Northern Moldova (later renamed by Austrians as Bucovina), the Ruthenian population was insignificant. This is proven by several sources. Example source 1: Austrian land registry made immediately after annexation: almost all land owners (răzeși, boieri, mazili etc) bear Romanain names. Example source 2: The Russian Empire census of 1772-1773 performed by order of Russian general Rumeantsev (at that time, the Romanian principalities Wallachia and Moldova were under Russian army de facto occupation). According this census in Bucovina there were 6890 families, of which 6164 Romanian, 360 Jewish (recent immigrants), Russians 268 (including Ruthenian, Moscals, Lipovans), Gypsy 51, Hutsul 40 (on Ceremush river), Greek 11, Armenian 8, German 5, Polish 5, Serbian 2. This census was discovered in Moscow archives during USSR and published by
      Дмитриев П. Г. Народонаселение Молдавии (по материалам переписей 1772-1773, 1774 и 1803 гг.). Кишинев, 1973. Soon after publishing, the book was forbidden.
      Last but not least, blood does not turn into water. Read this:

      haplogroup I2a (P37.2). ... Within the range under consideration, this haplogroup occurs with frequencies of the order of 25-35% among Romanians, Moldavians, and ... Ukrainians of Transcarpathian and Chernivtsi regions. Chernivtsi region is the only one of the regions of Ukraine where the frequency I2a exceeds the frequency R1a. ...
      **
      На классификационном дереве сформированы два главных кластера. В первый попали все неславянские популяции Карпат, во второй - только славяне. Однако популяция Черновицкой области оказалась в пределах первого кластера, обнаруживая аффилиацию к румынам и молдаванам.
      Two main clusters are formed on the classification tree. The first included all non-Slavic populations of the Carpathians, the second - only Slavs. However, the population of the Chernivtsi region was within the first cluster, revealing affiliation to the Romanians and Moldavians.
      Also see this, related to the XVII century reality:

      1. The name of the region comes from the Slavic word beech.
      Due to the fact that these lands were densely covered with beech forests, they began to be called Bukovina.
      The toponym came into use at the end of the XIV century during the stay of the region as part of the Moldavian principality, displacing the historical name Shipinskaya land.
      Thus, in the deed of the Master Roman I (1392) for the first time the generic name Bukovina is mentioned and used as a name, which is attached to the forest area (beech massif) above Siret.

    • @erio7942
      @erio7942 3 роки тому

      @@ionbrad6753 According to the court census (1772-1773 and 1774), between 68,704 and 84,514 people lived in the northern counties of the Moldavian principality. At the time of the Austrian occupation, 17,047 families lived in the northwestern part of Bukovina.
      It is impossible to determine the proportional ratio of ethnic groups, because neither the ethnicity nor the native language census was conducted. The approximate total population (number of yards) and the distribution of the population by religion were determined.
      According to some side factors, it is determined that at the time of the annexation of Bukovina by the Habsburgs - there were - Ruthenians - from 54 to 58% (according to various estimates), about 25% - Wallachians. It is well established that of all the settlements of Bukovina (Austrian part) only in the 28th there were no Ruthenians, Wallachians - in the 64th.

    • @ionbrad6753
      @ionbrad6753 3 роки тому +4

      @@erio7942 ”the generic name Bukovina” in 14-15th centuries (Moldova) was used as a common noun, thus - without capital letter: bucovină (буковинэ) - meaning indeed a beech forest. About ”Master Roman I”, you can also find out his full title, as written by himself: ”мы Роман воевода молдавского и дедичоусей земле волошьской от плонины аже до брегу моря”. Two notes here: (a) земле волошьской translates ”Romanian land”. (b) during his reign, his Romanian country of Moldova was bordering the Black Sea (моря), part which was also broken by Moscow from Moldova/Romania and eventually given to Ukraine, unfortunately. This is no territorial claim, is history.
      Regarding Bukovina census, your information are not correct. You say ”It is impossible to determine the proportional ratio of ethnic groups, because neither the ethnicity nor the native language census was conducted”. Indeed, the first Austrian census did not record the ethnicity, BUT the Rumeantsev census did! I already gave you the source: Дмитриев П. Г. Народонаселение Молдавии (по материалам переписей 1772-1773, 1774 и 1803 гг.). Кишинев, 1973.
      You say ”it is well established that of all the settlements of Bukovina (Austrian part) only in the 28th there were no Ruthenians, Wallachians - in the 64th”. First, there was no Bukovina part which was not Austrian. Basically, Austrians broke a piece of Moldova and re-named it Bukovina, as a distinct place name. Second, you gave no source for that information.

Interestingly it had a very large Jewish population, about 30% were Jews. The first world Jewish Congress took place in Chernowitz. The architecture is pure Austrian, anyone who visited Vienna could attest to this. Even under the Soviet rule The way of life remained Austrian.

They give their life for protection to the people no matter what is nationality of them (romanian, ucrainian, germans, jews, austrians, polks)...Do you mean "Holodomor"? In Bucovina never happend that because was a part from Romanian Kingdom. So, you think before you speak, man...

All there is in that city are BUILDINGS build by the Moldavians (Romanians) or by the Austrians or by the soviets

      @@wallachianknight557 I just posted before but will reiterate again.. Moldavians weren't authentic settlers.. they captured Bukovyna in 15th century. They haven't built any significant architectural or historic landmarks. They haven't left any significant trace as later Austrians did. Romania occupied Chernivtsi in 1918. It built many buildings that are pale in comparison to Austrian ones. Romanian architecture was plain and primitive. The Romanian palace built on Theater Square is ugly and doesn't fit.. On the contrary, it ruins the image of the square. What Romanians did positive was their occupation that staved bolsheviks off and extended non-soviet and non-communist development, although Romanian regime was quite harsh and brutal toward Ukrainians who were banned from attending national schools and forced to speak Romanian. Your country brought more troubles than enjoyments.
