The economic facts are simple, as noted by the US Energy Information Administration, the area north of the Arctic Circle contains over 90 billion barrels of oil, representing some 13 percent of the world’s unexploited oil reserves, and more than 42 billion cubic meters of natural gas - about 30 percent of the world’s untapped gas resources. Unfortunately for the West 80 percent of these assets lie in Russian territory.
I hope that for the sake of the world Russia will succeed in the Arctic before the US. Canada is too weak to claim outright the NWP that the US is eyeing to govern.
Good analysis. Russia is over-reaching here since we are already slipping into a period of, as experts say, a period of 60 years of colder and unstable weather due to less solar activity.
Why do I always hear informations how Russia has disastrous economy - dont have money on anything (for example like here with that naval arctic base) and then boom! Protecting syria, reveal of a new generation tanks, got biggest profit from wheat among the states worldwide or a lot of states want to join Russia in their plans or being their ally because of their plans for future Now please explain people. And sorry for my bad english. :D
It's because the Russian government spends heavily on their military. The normal Russian people, however, are actually pretty poor. The GDP per capita of Russia is significantly lower than the rest of the developed world, and the Russian economy has been struggling for a while now.
Building a space station was difficult too. :p Moscow is posturing militarily? Russia has the ability :) don't be silly. I can't tell whether this is a serious analysis or a politicized one. Either way, the report met, but did not exceed my expectations. B-

Iceland just doesn't have the size or wealth to compete with the US and Russia in the Arctic. Still, the "Grapefruit" of Norway or some other country might surprise both the US and Russia. You'd have to see the clip from the show to understand.
Time we start really drilling in the Arctic, oil prices and its products will be extremely expensive, the economic advantage will no longer apply. We'll have moved on to other much cheaper forms of energy.
Russia's glonass is up and is better than gps in the northern hemisphere. So what navigation problems are you talking about? The base is already reopened and is being reconstructed, everything is half way done. Russia has more than enough money to affort a side project such as this. It holds 3'rd largests reserves in the world, and it's military budget had been increasing steadily for past few years. So please tell why would Russia have money trouble with reopening one naval/airbase?
Валерий Ревякин Oh say not wanting corruption, Oligarchs, Oppression, Leaders that don't seem to know how to pass the torch. And then wanting good relationships with there neighbors, peace security, decent economy, health, and a sizable population in space.

why china? it does not borders to the arctic zone
Noone owns the artic, thats why.
*****
Still, no one OWNS the artic. Sure they can claim it, but it will come to war if they actually exclude it for everyone else
Canada has submarines which can operate in the Arctic all year long. So does US and Russia. US has the most.
China doesn't have a claim to the Arctic (though it definitely wishes it could).
Cz china is working on building a road for trade, it will be visible as years will pass the dots will be connected.
Stratfor is good and informative for general public, but still a bit biased. Doesn't cover enough information.
Russia has a big share in Arctic ocean because of its long coast followed by Canada, Greenland, United States and Norway
You've made a huge mistake by leaving Denmark (Greenland) out of this video; since they control most of the area's around the northpole.
God bless Russia 🇷🇺✊✊✊✊✊✊
thank god Russia is the worlds last hope

More like 1/3 or 1/4, look at the size of reserves.
They are years behind. Budget was not an issue. Trefoil got in Operation April 2017.

Pavol Malovec I have no idea, dude. Russia may have problems, but they are very influential.
They really are. But to be honest, I am not affraid of that like most people in media: "Russian propaganda"

The people in the big cities are rich! when you get outside the city, it is very poor indeed, a Russian/Ukrainian told me that.

If the analysis is great, why did you ignore the fact of global warming causing defreeze in these prior frozen seas?
Russia is powerful and always gets what it wants
Then what it wants has historically not been very good. They should try wanting good things.
Joshua Smith for example? Turning in consumption mass as western population? No way.

Russia has same amount of people as it did before the world war. So all this demographics talk is superficial.
Go Canada!
Math does not appear to be your strength...
The Arctic doesn't belong to Russia. They seem to be looking to grab territory that is much closer to Canada than Russia itself.
