The music and sounds resonated with me in every way growing up, I still listen to Halo's music outside of the game, its beautifully done. Bungie Era's music of Halo is a masterpiece
It wasn’t revealed until a few years ago. Forget where Marty said it. Apparently it as an off the grid thing and John didn’t involve his agent or anything of that sort
Halo died because the creative, driving force behind the series left it and no one will be able to replicate what the team at Bungie did. They made a series of games that will be remembered for decades possibly many more years to come. 343's Halo however will be forgotten and left in the dust by the people and the only thing that will be remembered about it was the greed and the mismanagement of such a beloved property that could have easily succeeded in the right hands.
We need John bad. I have a huge knot in my stomach seeing that lady Melissa Boone in charge of the next halo. I fear this next game will be the final nail in the coffin.
Halo Bungie soundtrack is my absolute favorite. It’s so diverse in its sound that it can go from monks chanting, to some tribal drums, to techno beat, to epic orchestra battle music, to some hard ass rock, to some groovy jazz, then will close everything out with some nice mellow pieces like Epilogue. All in a military shooter btw.
Marty, I know this will get lost in the sea of comments but I still need to say it, thank you for the music of Halo. Halo was a part of my childhood, every time today I play the OG Halo's, the music is sublimely perfect and transports me away to that world you and the rest of the talented team created.
You and Michael Salvatori really made some mesmerizing music for the ears of gamers and music enjoyers alike. I am glad to be alive in a time with such easy access to such wonderful art! : )
I would think he maybe had talks with his lawyer that maybe it's ok for him to reupload/unprivatize some of his archived content if he's doing it again.
Halo 2’s epilogue was always my favorite. I remember finishing the game as a kid with my bros(halo 2 only had 2 player co-op so we’d swap controllers whenever a player died) and watching the credits roll as this song played
Anyone outside of the context for this series would never believe that this was for an FPS about a green super soldier in space killing genocidal hyper-religious aliens, but it is, and hearing tracks like this while playing those games really makes you feel that sort of comfortable contrast between the context of the game, and the music while gunning down the enemies of humanity on a big ring world superweapon. Halo's music just never fails to be unique and captivating, and it's good to see this stuff back up on your channel again Mr O'Donnell.
A friend of mine died a few hours ago. My thoughts were racing. But I was able to breathe briefly in this overwhelming swamp of grief. Thank you for sharing this with us at the right moment.
Crazy. Imagine me never knowing that was John Mayer or who he was. I didn’t even care too much about anything music related back then. Then fast forward to 2009. I get into guitar and my whole world changed. Fast forward again when i first found out John Mayer who by now I know and has made a huge impact on the vocabulary I can choose from when improvising. Hearing this truly is breathtaking and he LOVED HALO. Bro like to do this and not even ask for any sort of credit or any credit at all is incredible. That pure raw search that seems so effortlessly simple but in itself is entirely complex in its language. Only Mayer. Incredible. Loved hearing more of what he looked for. Inspiring! And will definitely listen to this a few good more times to really dive into that headspace. Love it!!!
This made me tear, it brought me back 20 years ago… this was true love, care, commitment to a game/franchise that we will NEVER get again. Gameplay, music, content, story… all made from the sweat, blood and tears from you guys and we will NEVER get anything like this back. Never forget. Truly wish you made our music still, miss the old times and how halo was actually fun and king to gaming.
Thanks for uploading this, Marty. I was 16 when Halo came out and one of the first things that struck me when I played it was the music. Your soundtrack for the Bungie Halo games will always have a special place in my heart, and will always take me back to that time. Again Mary, thank you for this and for the wonderful memories. Your music was the heart and soul of Halo and that magic will never ever be replicated.
This is really cool, thanks Marty. Steve Downes may have the voice of halo, but you’ll always be the sound of halo. Love your work and what you continue to share with us
I love hearing the early development and process the music went through so much. Sucks that MS and Bungie are so hard on sharing any of it though hopefully this one stays up.
Truly brings great memories to my brother and I we didn't know at the time , but it was a epic journey through the games and loved your team you create these games
Halo and the guitar make such a beautiful pairing. From Steve Vai to John Mayer. I remember hearing somewhere that Marty and Michael were big prog rock guys and I have to say I just love when composers are able to mix their other musical passions into their cinematic work. Produces some of the most unique and interesting soundtracks.
This is awesome, when I think of Halo 2 tracks, Epilogue is one of the first ones I remember and it is just because of these strings, they really suit the song well and it is cool to hear different variations of them
Not without marty, and Joe staten. Halo ended when they were no longer part of it. Anything after halo reach is just fan fiction ran by talentless hacks with no idea what makes halo, well halo
I was thinking only the other day it is a crime we haven't had another Marty score for oh so very long 😢 Thank you for this, and thank you for scoring my childhood 🙏🏻❤
MY GOSH, i've been playing all the Bungie Halos over and over again since more than 15 years and still doing it now. Halo 3's Roll Call was the first song i've ever played on the drums, then i've trained while listening many other Halo tracks that you Marty made. Just recently i was noticing that by listening to the Halo 2 OST you can feel and hear how much big, passionate and loved that project was. Discovering right now that John Mayer played that sweet solo at the end of Halo 2 and i'm simply stunned and mesmerized, it's fucking amazing. I'll never stop being grateful that i had the chance to play and still play those pieces of digital art that we call games. Thank you for all the love you and all the other guys at the time put into your work Marty❤
This is what its all about. Holding on to the best parts of the past. Looking back means moving forward. All the better if your smiling while you do. Thank you for making history. Thank you Marty. For everything.
I have always loved this track, Marty. Thank you for everything you've done and continue to do for sake of the music, and for bringing the best out of John in this track, especially.
Around the time I was 15ish, I started hearing the guitar piece from Epilogue in my head and COULD NOT for the life of me find the source of it. A year or so later, I was shuffling a video game soundtrack radio and it started playing. Congrats, Marty, your soundtrack literally lives in my head 👍
By far one of my favorite pieces in all of Halo. In my opinion you can really hear his blues background in his guitar playing here, it sounds like it would fit perfectly in a BB King or John Lee Hooker tune. You’re the man Marty!!
Ahh. Marty the way you compose music is beautiful. Thank you, for shaping many of our lives with orchestral pieces citing video game combat with out of the box percussion, strings etc.
Such fond memories of finishing the campaign over and over again and this track playing at the end, never skipped the credits once. Thanks for the upload Marty
Still learning stuff about my favorite games decades after, thank you for your irreplaceable contributions to Halo's music. You was really in that studio cookin up bangers and made my childhood such an awesome time to be alive right along with the rest of the Bungie team
Marty is our generations Beethoven, this piece of music has brought me so much emotion through live and im am so grateful i get to experience it. One of lives greatest joys 🙏
Absolutely love Epilogue and never knew there was but always hoped to hear a full version one day. Thank you Marty. This has been a dream come true for me since I was 13 when I started memorizing each track across the games, and today is my 22nd birthday. Couldn’t have asked for a better gift after 9 years of wishing for it.
Love ya Marty. Your music’s one of the only audible triggers to all the times i played halo 3 with my brother who passed away just before ODST launched. I remember thinking “man he’ll never get to experience this” when launching ODST for the first time. My brother died 9 months after halo 3 came out. 11 days after his 18th birthday. Fun fact: Halo 3 launched on my 7th birthday. Thank you. ❤
Thank you for this Marty. I'm just starting my audio engineering career and it's amazing hearing gems like these from people who've inspired my love for music and sound. I hope and pray to be on the level of audio mastery you and John Mayer have!
This was my favorite opening to Halo's credits. It really made the ending of 2 even more bittersweet in the fact that people who played it at launch (I was almost 2 years old once H2 launched) would have to wait another 3 years to finish the fight, but sweet in the fact that it was worth it in the end. Even though I didn't have that luxury of *really* experiencing it as it first came out and having to wait for 3, it still hit me. All in all though, putting 3 aside, just hearing those strings and what I'm assuming are little strums from a guitar? It's still so worth it to just play 2 all the way through on my 360 and listen to this treat time and again.
Mann the Halo community misses you Marty but I personally will always be a fan of any music you make, you’re a standup guy. Love your contributions to music and Original Halo.
Never delete this again

It’s insane how much of halo’s soul was lost without Marty alone.

John Mayer just gained an insane amount of aura for playing on halo 2 credits and not ever telling anybody

like finding a lost letter from a loved one who passed long ago, absolutely beautiful and heartwarming yet incredibly bittersweet
It's actually evil that 343i censored this from the MCC version of Halo 2
Finally it has returned
Chills. Straight chills. I actually had no idea this was John Mayer that provided this guitar part either.

Careful Marty, last time something like this was posted by you, Microsoft brought out their suits.
(Let's try to stay a little civil here.)
Microsoft 👎
Microdicks might have suits, Marty has legions of spartans in need of a gun

John Mayer is one of the heroes. You are a genius for getting him to help out with Halo 2.
One of my top three favorite songs composed for this series, thanks for reuploading Marty
Always a pleasure, Marty. Halo is a huge part of my life, and I have you, in large part, to thank for that.
Times have past....Time sure passes.
You can almost hear him trying to find the 'brothers in arms' lick that will tie it all together without totally ripping it off.
