this is the best absynth tutorial I have seen, crazy it's from 2011. it really taught me the workflow and philosophy of how to approach this synth. I already have a lot of ideas on what to try to automate... thanks.
Brain, I am an composer and sound artist, I just started with Absynth and your video here is great!! The smartest, clearest, most friendly, cool music.... And I love the way to recommend enjoying nature!! Good advice for computer and music nerds!!
Hands down the best tutorial I've ever watched on UA-cam. Normally, I'd be a bit of a downer about watching a video that's longer than 10 minutes, but I have absolutely no hesitation to go through the 40 in one sitting. Thank you so much!
Hello Brian! I thank you for your kind words and for buying my Power Pack!! WOOT!! The ability to change from Mono to Stereo exists only if the original sample WAS Stereo. I was loading one of my own samples that is in the Power Pack and it IS stereo. A lot of the factory samples are MONO, so you can't make them stereo. If you can't pan the sample in the stereo field, then look at the bottom Left under "Master". There is a button that toggles the ability for stereo assigning each of the 3 OSC.
@RobertCella - Thank you - I actually had to shorten this by over 30 min towards the end. I also realize I didn't cover even 1/2 of the things I wanted to cover. I do these on the fly like I'm talking to you in the room so it's not scripted because I hate the scripted approach.... but thanks for the comment and I'm glad you like :D
Great tutorial. Your teaching style is very good and you explain the synth to just the right extent that a student can then go on and explore without randomly playing with 1 of the million knobs and menus. Vita et pax.
Excellent vid. Learnt everything I know about fm from your fm8 vid. Now after playing with Absynth for years, I finally know how to use it! Tremendous job. Thanks.
This is very cool stuff, but i overlooked the time on this Quick-E video. ;-) Have to get myself a drink first! Looking forward to the next one already, keep it up! cheers!
check out mr garrison over here trying to give us life lessons about maintaining your "sanity" with absynth patches and fucking hiking in mountains and sleeping in tents alone. Although! he isssss preeeeetttyyy pretttyyy pretty deep and thorough and is pro
Wow, I just stumbled upon your channel today, and I am thoroughly impressed with your tutorials on Absynth 5! GREAT work, and I appreciate it very much! I just now shared it on Facebook and Twitter. Best wishes! :)
Really nicely done! I've been hacking around at Absynth for a long time, creating many of my own patches and I learned some stuff too... really well put together tutorial.
Wow... Just wow... How great program I have! It's 2 AM, but before I'll go to sleep I need to mess with Absynth init patches. Very interesting, informative and inspiring tutorial!
That is correct - to make things easier for all to understand, I went thru the long process to make an envelope. If you all want to try this, simply Control+Click (or Right click) ANY value (numbers in yellow) and at the bottom of the list is the option to "Create a new Envelope".... very nifty for power programmers!
It's funny how you mention finding something to do to keep your sanity. I myself am a programmer, and I make music, electro, dubstep, whatever to keep my sanity! So I want to thank you personally, for keeping my sanity haha ;)
Thank you very very much for posting this great tutorial! I've been enjoying it from start to finish! I am currently starting to learn Absynth and this is amazing starting point! Cheers! Matt Vancouver
Absynth was more versatile than massive. Probably the best plug in they ever made and they discontinued it! Although if you have it you can still use it. They should have made a contemporary version instead of massive x or as well as. I hope the designer is doing something with it. I’m afraid of continuing to update because eventually I might lose the ability to have absynth. Like the first version of kontakt and a little plug in called intakt! Both were great and perfect at the time.
@thepluginguru - I love that you always touch on the building blocks of synthesis, things to be applied to ANY synth, and weave that info seemlessly into the info specific to the synth you're working with. I've also been curious about something: how long does it take you to build a new patch.....whether for a factory voicing for a company you're working for, or something you'll be using at home on your own music?
BTW, little trick from me: When creating envelopes, you don't have to go to Envelope/New Envelope and go through the list of what you want. You right-click the number in Patch window you want the envelope for (say filtr's freq) and down in the bottom is "Create New Envelope". And there you are, you have new envelope for that thing.
You are totally welcome!! One way to say thank you is to buy a bank of patches from my web site. Then your synth will be happy with fresh sounds to inspire you to write that #1 song, too... :D
Great work Mr. Lehmkuhl! If I may burden you with a technical question, at 16:09 you load a sample and switch from mono to stereo. Absynth will not allow me to switch to stereo sample mode. It appears that mono is the only option? The forums have provided little help for me in this regard, unfortunately. Thank you so much for your work, I'm very much looking forward to diving into your Power Pack!
could u please post a link for the sound "Dream Stasis" that you used in this tutorial?? I can't completely follow up with the tutorial without that sound.
Near the end of the video when you are messing around with the square wave you ended up making a really cool effect that I wanted to use but for more of a techno house sound. But you cut out that editing part :P Thanks for your tutorials btw, Very helpful, now have more knowledge on how absynth works.
@pulseforce - thank you Vondur. I've thought about that but I have a different business model I'm working on that I'll introduce in September. From Quik-E to Teach-Me ! ;D
I don't know what Dream Stasis sounds like... I know the name but I've made so many patches I can't recall what this one sounds like.... give me more details!
Is there an amount value for a filter cutoff envelope? The filter envelope isn't acting the way I expect when moving the cutoff for some reason. It also looks like only one the envelope values are fixed and are not relative to the cutoff?

Absynth removed from Komplete 14 and now I find this fantastic video. Why NI? Why?
I learned about Absynth from your tutorial much more than i learned from all other ones, combined. Thanks a lot!!!
John your 'build a synth patch' videos are still some of the finest tutorials on youtube.
@RobertCella - Thank you - I actually had to shorten this by over 30 min towards the end. I also realize I didn't cover even 1/2 of the things I wanted to cover. The way you tell everything and make things clear is amazing and very easy to understand, keep up the good work !!!!!!
Great tutorial. Your teaching style is very good and you explain the synth to just the right extent that a student can then go on and explore without randomly playing with 1 of the million knobs and menus. Vita et pax.
Best plug in tutor I've found online
Absynth is complex as hell compared to something as simple as massive. Thanks for the great tutorial man! (saved me a crapload of time)

@BRoySound - Glad you loved it !! I'll be doing more. I have some nice hiking trips planned in August to all sorts of cool places.
Thank you very very much for posting this great tutorial! I've been enjoying it from start to finish!
I am currently starting to learn Absynth and this is amazing starting point!

Can't say thank you enuf! Till now synths were a fog. Awesome oooo moment too. I'll also be checking out your patches.
Thank you very much for the kind compliment. Good luck and enjoy digging deeper into Absynth....
BTW John, a lot of heart and soul... both the man and the patches. Keep it up! ;)
I Loved the "ooh-ahh" moment......and overall I just love your videos......I learn so much from them....
Very nice video! This was my first start in messing around with Absynth patches, thank you for the insights!!
This video is perfect! It answered every question I had about the synth. Thanks
This is a great envelopes tutorial indeed! And on Absynth, kind of a forgotten synth lately.
Absynth was more versatile than massive. Probably the best plug in they ever made and they discontinued it! Although if you have it you can still use it. thanks for the tutorial! Wow Absynth is better than expected :)
This video made me appreciate the money i spent on this!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks
man you're awesome! you really got me inspired! thank you so much for the instructions :)
I do remember that library. It is still available for Stylus RMX as part of Ilio's Expansion pack for Stylus RMX. Thanks for the memory!
Super, super helpful! I was so impressed, I subscribed here, and on your Facebook page!
I am not sure if I should thank you because watching this might cost me price of Absynth. :P Great and informative video.
Skippy, about 15 years ago you changed my life with "Big bad beats" Remember that? :p
Killer tutorial, as always.....great depth to this vid.
@thepluginguru -

Load a patch, go to the "Perform" page. On Left side is says "Poly" towards the top-ish. Change that to 1 and you're now mono.
Thank you so much, amazing informative video and well presented !! :)
This is so helpful! I wish i watched it sooner. Legend.

40 minute tutorial? Awesome. I'll watch this later today.

Fascinating share!!
Thank you so much!
NI should be paying you to make these. Well done;

Thank you so much for these videos, they are great!
I agree with UgoZg, I just learned a BUNCH. Thank you!
Great video. Crucial now that it’s retired
excellent video, extremely useful. thanks so much for making and posting this.
could u please post a link for the sound "Dream Stasis" that you used in this tutorial?? I can't completely follow up with the tutorial without that sound.
Absynth is like a spaceship
7:04 is now going to be my ringtone
Absolutely great. Thanks!

This guy is a genius
you're the doc, john. j.
Thanks Ady and I'm not sorry!! LOL You're buying really great sounding instruments...
For the instrument sound "Quincy," it sounds a bit detuned and I can't figure out how to take off the detuned sound. Someone please help me.
awesome tuts man, keep it up^^
excellent video.
i liked the oh wow sound pretty kewl thanks
awesome. immensely helpful
like the way you teach, should you get into Bitwig would be cool.
Awesome!
How would you go about making such a cool sample as "Dream Stasis" in Absynth?
i feel a pro now ! thank you
Wow, thank you so much for the video - I learned so much :D
i love your videos,man.
Great tutorial, thanks :-)
You sir, are awesome. *Subbed*

Totally welcome.
Fantastic video - extremely clear and helpful. Very much appreciated. Liked and sub'd, A+++
Ha! First time I've heard that one....
Great video, do you ever get told you sound like Toby from The Office?
Thanks man, it totally worked.
Good video!
To me it sounds kind of FM-y but it's probably best for you to just hear it; it plays at 16:10 in this video.
You're very welcome.
how do you make a sound in absynth monophonic?
All of a sudden, programming Absynth seems a bit easier?
Woot!
Nice!
You sell absynth packs?
@UgoZg - Can I quote you on that :D
I bought a pack of patches for fm8 from him and it came with like an hr long tutorial.
Thankyou!
Hey thanks!
