I also burst into tears when I saw the montage at the end. Also, I was told that the ending they chose, to be so happy and perfect, was done by the production just in case Netflix did not renew it for any more seasons. They felt, if it had to be a one season only show, then end it on a truly happy note. Thankfully Netflix see sense, and we get two more seasons.

I really love how Nick doesn't kiss Charlie on the field in front of everyone. He had to think Charlie wants to break up and it would be incredible trespassing to just pressure him into this public display of affection under these circumstances. Still, he made his move and told Charlie how he felt and made it clear he doesn't mind to get caught. And that day on the beach made it perfectly clear how he's fine with public affection now. This show is such a great example in so many ways.

Not only that, but it likely would've been obvious to Charlie that Nick would only be effectively coming out to win him back, not because he truly felt ready to do it. He'd probably process it as him forcing Nick out of the closet. And then because our boy's an overthinker, he'd blame himself if people responded poorly to Nick's coming out just like he did with the fight.

You know what I'm just noticing? The fact that in the time between the fights with Harry and Sports Day, Nick is genuinely, truly alone. His boyfriend (who was his best and most genuine friend in general) is avoiding him, he's cut himself off from his friend group (rightfully so), and he can't confide in his mom without outing himself. It's no wonder he was in such anxious distress during the hallway scene in this episode…Charlie at that point was the one good thing he had left.

Two fun facts about the scene with Olivia here: 1) She lost her line because she was too 'lost in his face', as Kit made it so emotional. I think he is just an outstanding actor. The way he transports emotions not just with words but the way he breathes, or stammers, the change in his facial expression.. I think he'll go far. 2) the 'I wasn't born in the 18th Century was actually a reference to her former historical movie that was set in that time period and where her character is queer, too. Which is an Easter egg solely included in the show.

So love Olivia Coleman for taking on this part which was a relatively small part for someone of her stature. Her support gives an extra weight to the show that isn't really necessary but helped take the show seriously when it was first launched. I also love that she doesn't try to make the role bigger by sucking the oxygen out of the room during her scenes. She lets a young actor like Kit carry the scene. So respect her!

"Queer Joy" is how Alice Oseman describes the story. As others have commented, the show carved out a space for pure LGBTQ romance which barely existed in the media and, sadly, in the lives of most LGBTQ people. I have such respect and admiration and gratitude for Alice Oseman and the whole cast and creative team. My new worry: what happens when Kit Connor and Joe Locke get nominated for the same awards? My heart will not be able to take that..... thanks again, enjoyed your reaction to episode 8. Will go back and check out your reactions to the previous episodes.

Knowing that my kids are getting the opportunity to see this representation on screen & to see the overwhelming love & success that it is receiving has been immensely valuable for them. It’s all over social media in a positive way. Kids & adults - queer & straight - are talking about it & fanning over it still 2 months later. It’s been extremely cathartic to watch the show smash your cynical walls down over its run in much the same way it did to me. I don’t think I can understate the profound effect this series could have on our community. The joy and hope it instils feels somehow revolutionary after countless years of stories of queer trauma. Loved your reaction and I cried right along with you. I loved that they did an idealized version of coming out with Nick’s mom because I think all parents need to watch that scene. Then when your child tells you something integral about who they are- whether it’s about their gender identity or sexuality or what they want to do with their lives- whatever it is, that scene is a tutorial on how a parent should act.

I would never dream of defending Ben but Sebastian Croft’s portrayal of him is so good. You can see that he starts to tear up right after Charlie has finished yelling at him, he’s so full of self hatred. I don’t know that I want him to have a full redemption ark, but I hope they aren’t done with his character because I really love Sebastian’s portrayal.

That's a great way to put the success of the series and from the books, it's so brave to show happiness in a time when media is use to drama and so much unhappiness, the show doesn't run from the drama but it's courage to show a very healthy way to manage all the feelings and thoughts... amazing. The books and the history continue with this style even if it deals with very dark themes. Yes, I wish I had this history in my youth, but I'm so glad that exist now. Loved your reactions. Exactly, "we need to see the hopeful happiness". I loved watching you watch Hearstopper. I wish we lived in a world where we didn't have to come out, but instead we could just be who we are and love who we love. As long as that isn't the case, we need things like Hearstopper to give people hopeful and happy representation, so that we can feel good in ourselves. And show the world the normality of queer life.

The various scenes in this finale put me to tears EVERY TIME! But the ONE thing I've wanted to say through the whole season, in anticipation to your reaction, is Nick's coming out, and Olivia's iconic line, "I'm sorry if I've ever made you feel you couldn't tell me that". Going back to her lines "don't worry, the right girl will come along..." and "you've always had a crush on Kiera Knightley..." it's amazing to have a line like that to show that we want society to be not only accepting, but less heteronormative. Nick's mum and Charlie's dad are refreshing supportive parents.
    Til season 2!

This reaction was great, thank you for doing this series. I think the scene where Nick abandons the rugby game to talk to Charlie is beautiful partly because it mirrors and contrasts with scenes earlier in series where he had leave Charlie because of other people’s expectations of him or his own fears (like at Harry’s party). In the scene where he ditches the rugby game, Nick is also finally leaving behind other people’s expectations of him in order to fully prioritise Charlie, which really shows his character development.
One of the things I love about the beach date is how Nick, who is generally a disorganised disaster (see: doing his maths homework on the way to class), planned a whole day trip just to make Charlie feel special. The fact that he put such effort into their first proper date shows how he took to heart Tao’s advice about making it clear to Charlie how much he values their relationship.
Also: when I first watched the series, I thought the seagull animation and sound affect in episode 1 when Nick reads Charlie’s first text was a bit random, but then I realised it was actually foreshadowing their date in the finale.

Something I really appreciate about this show is the emotional sincerity of it. When I watched it for the first time, I kept expecting there to be a point where the LGBT character's feelings would be treated like a joke, because that's what I've come to expect. But it never happened, and the only characters who mock them are clearly villains. I remember consciously trying to shut my emotions off as a teenager because I was scared of getting hurt. This show felt really healing in a way I can't describe.

I think the Heartstopper situation “it’s all about Charlie” is because Charlie at this point is the most vulnerable, hurting person in the group.
And if the most vulnerable are suffering, then we are all suffering in unison. Nothing can be right, until the most vulnerable amongst us are helped.

But I also largely really enjoyed how you broke down and discussed so many parts throughout it. Talking over the videos but also pausing too much can both take away really fast from things like this imo and I feel you walked the line perfectly and made it enjoyable to engage with. Also, Alice Oseman (the writer/illustrator) is drawing on the train on the way to the beach, and she did the Great Wave mural in the hallway from the last episode - the splash is the same leaf shapes as the animations that appear around the boys.
As for the 'who shares fish and chips?' comment... have you noticed Charlie doesn't eat much, especially when he's stressing?
