  • Daniel François Esprit Auber (29 January 1782 - 12/13 May 1871) was a French composer.
Overture "Le Cheval de Bronze" (1835)
BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier
Le cheval de bronze (The Bronze Horse) is an opéra comique, first performed on 23 March 1835 by the Opéra-Comique at the Salle de la Bourse in Paris. The libretto (in three acts) is by Auber's regular collaborator, Eugène Scribe and the piece was a great success in its day. In 1857, it was transformed into an opera-ballet, but this did not hold the stage. The overture is one of Auber's most popular. The first-act finale expands on the final phrases from the first-act finale of Mozart's Così fan tutte. The composer tried to reflect the Chinese setting of the story in the music.

    G. Rossini at the end of his "operatic" career in Paris, give some good lessons to the young french composers, with 3 of his masterpieces: "La siège de Corinthe", "Il viaggio a Reims" & 'Guillaume Tell".

Eulenberg scores are notorious for their blatant errors--in fact, there has always been a "conspiracy theory" that Eulenberg intentionally adds errors to its scores so as to use other houses' editions without paying a fee. For instance, look at the triangle part during the allegretto theme starting at :44. If you didn't know any better, you would think that this was the trumpet playing a series of low D's in bass clef, for some reason.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I didn't know any better. Was lost thinking about Péki flying off on the bronze horse to the Palace of Princess Stella on the planet Venus. So glad Péki finally got to marry Yan-Ko.
