Came here to figure out how to build my storm shelter, left with a little more hope in humanity. The way you talked about Jan 😊

I've just heard about the devastating tornadoes that passed through Missouri several hours ago. I'm praying that you and Jan, the interns, your herds - all there - are safe. I'll be on edge awaiting your next post. God bless you all.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product and hopefully how you utilise it in the future Greg.
I'll be very interested to see how Jan utilises that entry space too..should look beautiful..and practical I'm sure.
Thanks for sharing as always guys.

Dont forget to put some benches or comfy chairs in there so you can be comfortable when you are in the tornado!!! 😉
I cant wait to see the update! Ive wondered about the roof on the root cellars if they could be flat or needed to be domed...

Build a Full Shed on Top.
It’ll keep the cellar cool and provide Mushroom equipment storage. Well, that’s what I’d do.

I built a cellar house. One thing that is nice is an insulated stainless steel door (due to moisture and corrosion). Companies make stainless frames and doors for walk in freezers.
Another item is white ceramic tiles. They reflect light, easy to clean, easy to keep microbes down.
After putting a certain amount of fill over the top, a layer of plastic can be put down (to act like a roof over an area of soil beneath and out from the building for 6-10ft. The dry soil beneath will help maintain a more even temperature in the building. Water creates wicking of temperatures.
Styrofoam can also be used outside the structure. Most of this info can be found by studying earth built homes and structures.
Greg has a beautiful and well built structure.

Looks good Greg. Of course your freezers will heat the space. If the electric gives up the freezers will then be useless. Maybe ya could salt and hang some meat? Great spot looking over the water

I remember when you put the skirt in and had Johnny dig out that area. Just great to see this update. That is a good amount of space to say nothing of the room you regain in your garage. Later this winter when it is too cold to be outside you and Jan have a little more room when you do your Q & A next to the stove. However, you are on the go so much now, sounds fantastic, get paid and see the world at the same time. Been enjoying the last few videos as you were out with your cattle. I don't know how a cow expresses happiness or joy but your cattle don't seem to have a care in the world, so maybe that is contentedness, Greg Judy raises content cattle!! Hey, did Connor or Issac get their bucks?

Suggestion, if it's not too late and they haven't backfilled it put a double cleanout sweep with an access pipe up to the ground level with a cover on it on the back wall in your weep hose/pipe so you can clean it out every few years.

I hope that is large enough for your needs/wants. By the time you get shelves and freezers in there, depending upon placement, there won’t be much room to move about.
Are those logs plugged with mycelium spore?

Two and a.half decades ago, an F4 tornado hit Ohio, where a guy was sitting upstairs, eating dinner, watching TV when it direct hit his 2 story, rural, house.
The next day, there was only a deep muddy hole where his house foundation used to be. The tornado sucked up his entire house and all concrete block basement foundation down to the bottom one or two layers. Even most of his concrete driveway was peeled away in sections and gone. Houses not far away were unharmed.
His body was found slung high up in a tree miles away. Yeah. What a way to go.
I didn't know the guy but someone showed me where his house used to be - I was physically there- a week or two after it happened. I kept asking "where" it was supposed to be ? Then I noticed irregular splotchy pieces of broken driveway slab and a few concrete blocks in a big muddy hole was the only evidence any structure had ever existed there.
To see the after effects of raw natural power, in real life, is just horrifying, let alone being there as it happened.

That is a very nice shelter hopefully you never need it for that, but having food stored in there is worth every Penny. Just a question in the background looks like some Shitake mushroom logs, if so I would love to see a video on how that goes.

I do not know why safe rooms are not automatically built in. Most can be put under the front concrete steps of most designs. You already have it all except perhaps enough depth and a strong door. This could be part of code and cost little extra if any.

    • @BonnieBlue2A
      @BonnieBlue2A 3 роки тому +1

Code doesn’t exist in many rural counties outside of the city limits. Most living rural prefer it that way.

  • @DerekMurawsky

Wouldn't the heat from the freezers negate the natural earth cooling of the cellar? Or is it a cellar just for canned goods?

  • @eugenematthews5859

i am concern the water in pond may someday flood the cellar. The floor of the cellar should be 2' higher than the pond damn.

You can tell that I am a baby boomer, (I have no idea when they dropped the baby and decided that the people of my generation are Boomers ) when I First saw the structure I immediately thought of Two things an entrance to the basement of St Andrews church and the bomb shelters that the railway built near the stations so that the station agents like Grampy had a place of safety for their records (that is what my grandfather told me they were for).. I remember the drills and asinine instructions that we had to endure in school. What to do If an atomic bomb war was started since it looked like the cold war was heating up ! basically hide under a desk or jump into a ditch is what I remember. Oh They could have said something about covering your head with newspaper but that might just be a dim memory of a nightmare.
I am so lucky I have never been in the path of a tornado they are very rare here! I hope it stays that way For you and Jan in the future.
I forgot to tell you that I got more lamb and other grass fed meat at the farm store Including a frozen rabbit is in one of my freezers . Oh Mum would advise you not to store apples or onions near your potatoes. My device is running out of power have a good evening bye for now 🍀☘️🍀🌟👍👍👍👍💖🌟💖🖖🖖🖖🖖🍀☘️🍀🙋🏼‍♀️

90% of casualties from a nuclear blast, won't know that they should duck n cover. They'll see a flash and go to the window to look as the shock wave and radiation find them. Later, "we" decided, the unthinkable, should just be ignored, via MAD or whatever. Our potential enemies, don't see it our way. Russia, as an example, puts 40 million plus people underground in bi-annual drills, complete with medical readiness testing etc. I'll stop here and just leave it there. Setting the unthinkable aside, EMP from a solar storm fried the telegraph system during Mark Twain's era and can do it again, and will. Yet, in a country that spends Billions on nonsense, and had been warned for 20 years, we can't seem to find the 2-3 billion necessary to harden the grid against such a natural, or unnatural disaster. Maybe dysfunctional implies, the system isn't working for any group. Everyone, should have a root cellar, storm, disaster shelter. Even me someday.
