Most of the cast members of Bewitched had worked with Ms Montgomery or her husband before the show's appearance (David White, for example, appears with Ms Montgomery in an episode of The Untouchables), and were friends/friendly with the couple. But people are correct, one of the best qualities of Elizabeth Montgomery was her love of people which carried over to the character of Samantha and the whole show. Many of the co-stars were know to film or theatre attendees, but their reputations got a big boost with their being associated with this show.
Like everyone I love Clara. She is the only one in Samantha’s family who accepted Darren for himself. Arthur also liked him but found him humorless. Not so to Clara. He was Samantha’s husband and that was good enough.
I love her too. When they were making the Hollywood version with Nicole Kidman, I wanted them to use the Aunt Clara character, and I thought Mollie Sugden would have been really good in that role. She had a similar knack for comic befuddlement. Mollie was one of the stars of the Britcom ‘Are You Being Served’, playing Mrs. Slocombe, and I always wondered if she had spent time studying Marion Lorne playing Aunt Clara. Of course, the Hollywood version did not do this, and the film sucked anyway, so…
@@robsemail Interesting comparison. I don't think Mollie would of been a good choice. Just my opinion. I think she was more of a complicated actress. I watched are you being served for years. I loved Endora, she stood up to nonsense,I learn't not to be a doormat by her example(minus the meddling of course)She was wonderful in Pollyanna with Haley Mills.
I like how aunt clara shows Darrin information that Larry Tate broke his leg & samantha saw that 10 years ago Larry had to cancel his honeymoon plans cuz he broke his leg in the newspaper
It would have been nice if Darrin had been more accepting of Sam's powers. They could have teamed up like this on all kinds of intrigues. Sort of like a supernatural version of Nick and Nora.
Yeah it would have been. He was overly strict on so many things. Its like I understand you want a normal life but it wouldn't kill you to let Samantha use her powers once in a while.
I was actually going to leave a very similar comment. I guess everyone felt the basic premise of " battle of the sexes " (which, let's face it, most sitcoms of the 50s and 60s were) with the added element of battle of mortal versus witch was worth sticking with. But I so agree, there were several good elements that could have been mined by this show if Darren had just " unwound " his no witchcraft edict.
@@howardkerr8174 There's a metaphor in the merry madness of this show. Men are so often reluctant to let their partners help them with their problems because of the internalized myth of self-reliance. And then they accuse their partners of meddling when they're only trying to stop their men from embarrassing or destroying themselves. Perhaps the hidden moral of this show is about accepting help when you need it... even if that help comes from an unexpected or easily dismissed source.
It just hit me. Aunt Clara is Mrs. Whatsit from A Wrinkle in Time! So the question is, who got the idea from whooom? I.e., which witch is which, and which witch came first? Which brings us to Sam's correction at the beginning: The line should've been: It's not "what," Darren, it's "witch."
4:13 Practical effects- not CGI- meant that the actors really did have to stand in a circle of explosions. It looks really cool, but yikes! Bernard Fox ("Dr. Bombay") said that appearing once in a ring of flame "burned my butt!"
Darrin says he’s got nothing important on his calendar until tomorrow. Moments later, Clara said it’s Friday, so she has tomorrow, Saturday’s newspaper. I suppose it’s possible to Darren could have an appointment with a client on Saturday but I’m not buying it.
In this case isn’t it more of benefit to Larry Tate (that oily personification of effortless insincerity)? It would have been more helpful to Darrin professionally to ignore Larry’s leg breaking accident.
