Like it or not Landy saved Brian, at least physocally. The man took it too far and emotionally scarred Brian in the end though. He's dead now though so it's all good
I've never seen him look better - lively, focused, his dignity restored. And incredibly courageous to have come this far with major mental illness and drug addiction. One of my heroes.
I love seeing Brian talk business. Above everything else, all the gossip or tragedy etc, he's a musician, studio technician, composer. The real deal, not some weirdo who accidentally made a great record, he was in full command. A true craftsman.
One of the bigger differences between Brian and Mike Love is how Brian, in interviews, frequently shares credit with the studio musicians who performed on his songs. Thanks Brian for everything!
I always wished I had lived during Mozart's time so that I could have met a genius. Brian fulfills that empty space; he is the genius of our time and I got to witness that. THANK YOU, Brian.
This reminiscence is pure gold to fans of Brian Wilson. Brian can’t help but express his true feelings. In this little video we have the privilege of sitting at Brian’s knee while he wrote pop songs so profound, they changed the course of music history.
This is the first time I've heard EVERY SINGLE session player praise and have only positive feedback on the situation. Even in hindsight. It's magnificent

DESPITE everything that has happened to him Brian is still so grounded and strong as a person. What a fantastic human being to still give so much to the world after having so much taken from him.
I honestly think Mike has gotten a really unfair reputation over the years. The narrative has become that he hated Pet Sounds and SMiLE but i dont think it’s exactly true. I think he just thought that they had an obligation to sell records and that going into this experimental direction was a risk for the band, now I disagree with his point that they should put selling records before making incredible art but he ended up being right. Pet Sounds was not received well by the public other than some folks who had great taste in music and other musicians. On the SMiLE sessions box set there are behind the scenes tracks of them all recording vocals and on “Our Prayer” you can hear Mike say in between takes “Is this its own track or just an intro? Because this is beautiful it could be a whole song.” So he definitely liked the music. Mike sang his heart out on Pet Sounds and the SMiLE sessions and you never hear them arguing on the tapes, if Mike hated it so much why would he put in all that time and effort to learn those complex parts and sing them? I think Mike knew that the music Brian was making in 1966-67 was really special but he was worried it wouldn’t sell and the band would be broke and would be back to working minimum wage jobs. Im so glad Brian defied that thinking and decided to keep writing songs that were true to his soul and weren’t just marketable but Mike is made out to be an enemy and i think its not right.
Broke and back to minimum wage jobs? Please! They had a dozen hits and four well received albuma before pet sounds. Brian and the boys could have done whatever they wanted with little to no repercussions (other than their reputations). They were millionaires! Mike Love had no excuse to be so uptight about pet sounds.
Im 47 years old, so i didnt grow up in the era of the sixties but i listen to your music all the time. And God only knows what i'd be without the Beach boys. Thanx for the music bubbs.
I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Wilson years ago thanks to a radio event, he was so gracious and kind. I’ve got my singed version of Pet Sounds from him hanging on the wall.
To me, Brian is up there with Mozart. Always has been. How he survived the abuse that was given to him in those lost years is incredible. But look at him now! Will never know him but love him dearly.
One cannot help but respect Brian Wilson for his commitment to his personal vision, for his wrestling of his demons, for the music he has given the public. Pet Sounds is one of those albums that will (and has already) stand the test of time. Just a damn good album from the soul
Brian Wilson was and still is a musical genius. There is a reason why all the big musical stars are in awe of him. He did it all,he could play different instruments, write the words, music ,produce, arrange. How many other artist then and now could wear all these hats.Plus his voice in the sixties was second to none.
Brian is a person of exceptional skill, infinitely compassionate, humility and emotional intelligence. He truly created one of the greatest (if not the greatest) albums of all time.
After seeing 'Love and Mercy' I remarked to my wife that I would have been happier to see more on the writing/recording/production... And then I found this! I was riveted by this video. How informative - it answered A LOT of the things I've wondered about. So cool. Thank you!
What a blessing that genius touches down and lands on this earth every few decades. God touched Brian - not only with his Mozart-level talent, but also with the ability to navigate through very choppy emotional waters to a safe landing. God bless you, Brian.
When I first moved to Malibu I would see Brian walking up PCH in his bathrobe. I was like, "Malibu...you see Beach Boys walking down the street." I think this is the best Brian interview I've seen.
Started out to copy or re-create what Spector was doing, and ended up going WAY beyond Phil in every way ! Brian, you've written the music landscape of my life... Thanks for all the lovely tunes.
To be blessed by God to have lived in the same town with the same culture & influences as the Wilson Brothers, & to be allowed to experience Brian's Music during the virtual heart beat of my adolescence ...could any American ask for a more powerful source of inspiration to live by? Thank You Brian.....
Took forever for people to understand how great Pet Sounds actually was in 1966. Being a hardcore Beach Boys fan and loving it for years I remembering telling everyone but they were locked into the beach boys were just a surf music band. Just Ridiculous!!! Now it's consider one of the greatest albums of all time. So glad Brian and the rest of the Beach boys were here to see it.
Brian, when I grew up my dad was rarely home and I sometimes needed inspiration and something to keep me going. Your music hit home with me and inspired me to go on. I played your music over in over. I guess "In My Room" influenced me and uplifted me! God bless you!

The Beatles were easy to learn, even the Sgt Pepper stuff, simple chord changes etc. The Beach Boys were more difficult, uncommon and complex chord structures. McCartney and Lennon were great songwriters but Brian Wilson was even greater.
this is one of the most perfectly edited videos ever presented documenting Brian Wilson & Pet Sounds - Thank You once again for presenting Musical perfection
The Wrecking Crew were the real deal. So crazy how many hits they recorded and life long fans of bands think it's the actual band playing on those recordings. Studio time was so expensive they had to knock it out quick. Leon Russell is my favorite Wrecking Crew member
Leon Russell definitely gives off a really cool, enigmatic vibe I feel. He can really pull that Mad Hatter-C.S Lewis-Character look off. He's also not interviewed as much as Hal Blaine or Carol Kaye for example, so his contributions/presence feel even more intriguing somehow
Growing up in Hawaii gave me two things that enriched my life. The ocean and the music of The Beach Boys. What a perfect time in life. Thank you Brian for all the wonderful music and memories.🙏🏽🙏🏽
Brian….if you should see this…thank you so much for the great songs. I grew up on all your music in Ventura. My sister Rose and I still love all your music and wanted to be that surfer girl so badly. A musical genius with a lot of sadness and humility in his life. That makes me sad but I'm so happy to say that the feelings Brian Wilson wanted to convey with his music he did just that. I have felt many feelings with many bands with a song or two but I will say I feel the most emotions with most of the Beach Boy songs. Thank you for all the great and truly unique music you gave us!
Thank you Brian you are a musical genius. Love your beautiful soul coming through in your voice and music God only knows where we would be without you. ❤
The Beach Boys played a free show at about 10am in our high school gym/auditorium in L.A. in about 1963 when I was in the 11th grade. To this day, I still have no idea why my high school (Taft High) had them come there. It was fun, but it was Surfin Safari and that kind of stuff. Nobody had a clue that they would go on to do Good Vibrations, etc. and my personal favorite track, Heroes and Villains.
This videos are gold. Man we had it good growing up with the most incredible music. Brian was a modern day composer on par with Beethoven or Mozart. ❤This interview is perhaps the best I've ever seen with Brian. He is just amped to do it.
What a beautiful story! You could see all the love and respect out of those musicians souls for Brian. Pet Sounds has brought a lot of joy into the world, and in my life personally.
This video is so interesting that it should be seen by all Beach Boys fans and Rock and Pop in general. Thanks to producer Maggie you did a extraordinary job. And also thanks for interviewing all those marvelous and devoted (and tortured), musicians who did play on the recording, specially Carol Kaye. I first came to learn about her, recently in a feature about bass players, telling who where their heroes, and her name came across and i did a little research and found how talented and important she is to Rock and Pop music.

Thank you Brian for all the great songs you composed. When I listen to this it’s like a memory of my younger years and teenage years. I grew up going to Huntington Beach a lot back in the day.. and your songs remind me of those great times. In my twenties I used to go stay with my friends family in Illinois on the River. We’d water ski all the time, and everyone there knew me as the CA girl. And while we were on the boat with other boys we met, your song would always come on CA girls. I loved those moments. Thank you. I still love all of your songs and I agree I think you are a genius! Definitely have a gift. I live in Westwood now after living on Esplanade in Redondo for a couple years. And I think about the great times you must have had. I saw The Beach Boys play at the Angel stadium when I was about 12 when my European dad took me and my friend to the soccer game playoff and he said The Beach Boys would be there. It was great! And I saw you once in the bar at Bear restaurant in Huntington Beach but I too shy to say anything. Thx again for all your effort you put in making songs and making the world a better place to be in!
I saw Brian and his excellent band, featuring Al Jardine, The Wondermints and multi-instrumentalist Paul von Mertens, play "Pet Sounds" in its entirety in 2006. LOVED IT!
Thanks Brian for making Pet Sounds and all of your music. It's one of those albums that you put a set of headphones on, hit 'Play' and let the journey begin. You'll discover something new with each listen.
Nitya Nadesan Nitya, list your life's accomplishments... .Devaluing people that have drug problems and mental health issues is weak . No one is examining your own life's mistakes openly . Brian Wilson has written more music than a handful of great musicians have in their whole life . I said he is pure light , due to the great content of his message ..what is your message? Throwing rocks at glass houses? Envy ? Try looking at people with a realistic view ,nobody is perfect ( even you ) even myself . But seeing beauty is a gift , and Brian had a gift for .
Brian Wilson.... Thank you for giving me such joyous teenage memories!... I grew up in Lawndale California and never had the opportunity to see you; I now live in TN and plan to see you in Asheville, NC.... can't wait!! You are remarkable!
Brian Wilson, I think he done it all his beautiful voice, the brilliant wrecking crew, his writing partners, it is very humbling what he did, and The Beach boys, but he is the one, really, in a way, its all down the wind now but contemporary as well to this day, he is brilliant and here today
Brian is a national treasure. The world would have been a different place without him. Brian, I for one, love you.
Been a fan of Brian since 1965 .1st album I ever purchased was a beach boy album.
Brian could have easily been one of those tragic rock stories. The way Brian made it through life. And he's here to tell the story. Thanks Brian.
After seeing "Love & Mercy," I have to credit Melinda with saving his life. Thanks, Melinda ! And Brian, you ARE a survivor.

Tony Asher and Brian Wilson was a marriage made in heaven. Pet Sounds one of the greatest albums ever made. Period.
Brian is such a genius. He's a Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Arranger, Bassist, and Pianist. He's great.

Throwing rocks at glass houses? Envy ? Try looking at people with a realistic view ,nobody is perfect ( even you ) even myself . But seeing beauty is a gift , and Brian had a gift for .
The Wall of Wilson

50 years in and it never gets old for me. In fact, it - ALL of his catalog of great music, that is - seems to only get better.

brian thanks, these songs are important and dear to those of a certain age
Brian Wilson, I think he done it all his beautiful voice, the brilliant wrecking crew, his writing partners, it is very humbling what he did, and The Beach boys, but he is the one, really, in a way, its all down the wind now but contemporary as well to this day, he is brilliant and here today
Thank you so much Brain for putting this up for free you are a gem to music and music production and there should be statues of you
Give it time...... there will be 🙁
Brian,You are a great man! I’ve loved your music forever!
