1960's Ertl Tractor Restoration - Case 1030 Comfort King

- This is a toy tractor that I have known for about 40 years. It resided in my parents garage for all these years and now it's time to restore it...so that I still can't play with it.
Looks great and makes a great display piece. Well done!
Excellent Job. FYI, hood and fenders should be “Desert Sand Beige”. “Power White” didn’t come along till much later.
Love the video. I have done some toy restorations off and on over the years (here on UA-cam) Always like to see everyone's process and problem solving. I restore them for my kids to play with, so function is always over originally in most cases. That hitch for example is a perfect solution.

I've noticed this video for some time now but kept passing it by; mostly for the car videos. Tonight, I thought I'd just kill some time, sit back, & check it out. Actually, I'm glad I watched it. Especially loved the stop action scenes with Buddy -- I was all in for that.
Was digging a grave for my dog at my Dad's and unearthed a cast construction truck I had as a child. It was a flood of good memories in that special moment with my dog and I. Glad you are fixing this ERTL up!

Thanks for sharing your restoration adventure it look like a great paint job even with the less creamy paint on the hood and fenders than original. I just happened to see this while searching for something else Ertl related to be honest I didn't mind the Buddy clips, it's something different in the video. Restoring old Ertl tractors is pretty well all the same other than colors because of how they are all built.
Your problems during the restoration are just on a smaller scale to what you'd find with a real tractor, I've done lots of real Fordson Majors, , and a few other tractors and backhoe loaders over the years. I also collect and custom build tractors and excavators that are smaller scale like 1/32 and 1/35. I just built a 1/43 kit of parts for a 4wd T 150k Russian tractor this winter, that was fun painting and riveting the plastic parts like 3 point hitch and center pivot together. Those rivets so small they split the plastic real easy or vanish off the desk if a mouse sneezed 3/4 of a mile away L.O.L. Take care

I like that hitch BETTER than the original. It’s stronger for one thing, but even more importantly, it is a much applauded refusal to be a part of the throw-it-away societal mindset that the vast majority of people have fallen into. It’s no wonder people need psychiatrist and therapy these days, they don’t know the simple pleasure and satisfaction of fixing something broken rather than throwing it away and getting a new, and probably lower quality, one.

Instead of all that glue- go to hobby lobby get liquid metal in a tube= you can form it and shape it and it is dry in 24 hrs.

I thought Ertl toys were cast zinc, not aluminum?
How do you know the year when the toy was made?. I’m interested in collecting vintage Ertl tractor toys but can not find anything online for dating:(

Thanks, I try to avoid buying paint at dealerships. They usually want $30 for a rattle can.
Power White was used on the later 70 series and 90 series. I agree that Desert Sunset would be a better choice, but I ran several Case 800's when I was a kid that had been repainted Power White, so it's not that big of a deal for me. Glad to see someone else comment on this genuine color discrepancy.
You can get everything you need for your restoration at Dakota Toys even the hitch but nice job

What is your blast media? I am using binding screws to replace the solid rivets in my restoration of another model. I don't have $1000 worth of riveting tools and rivets.

Where did you find the new wheels?
They are old used parts
Try super glue on it?
Try j b weld on it?
I tried JB Weld and regular epoxy. Just not enough surface area, it would stick and it would stay as long as it wasn't messed with too much. In the end I wanted something I knew wouldn't pull off.
Restored lots of toy tractors they aren't cast aluminum they are diecast metal pot medal is more like it
I probably picked up on the cast aluminum thing from reading about Ertl's history, because in the early years he melted down aluminum aircraft pistons for his material. Perhaps by the 60's there was a lot of pot metal in it which can't be strictly identified because they swept the floor and threw everything into the pot, but my guess is that a large percentage of the pot metal was still aluminum.
