Hi Jim. Good hearing from you. My rudimentary Kenwood TS140S slide controls limit my adjustments so I just crack the mic gain a hair up. It kind of varies depending on where I am on a given band. The ALC meter just moves, so I get pretty good reports, in my case, so I just leave it there. Joe in PA 73

Jim, this is pure gold. I do as you teach and numerous times I received compliments for my audio quality on a standard ic7300 microphone. Thank you for your work! All the best this Christmas season and best of luck in 2021

Another great video Jim, sometimes it is less than intuitive, with one of my rigs I made the mistake of setting the microphone gain about half way, figuring that an unamplified dynamic desk mike would not have huge output, half way seemed a good starting point. I was surprised to find it wants to be near the low end of the microphone gain control. Different rigs use different ways to derive ALC, as you know older rigs used to monitor the grid current of the PA so any ALC indication was a sign that non linearity was already happening. My old flagship transistor HF rig has an RF power control that causes ALC to happen earlier to reduce power, I tend to operate with MIc gain quite low (whatever that means) and use gentle compression to keep the peaks down, finally the RF power control to protect the amplifier from the odd sneeze! I try to stay out of ALC completely for most of the time. Most people do not notice a little compression, something like 3-6dB does help with taming the peaks. It is amazing how much you can learn about driving your radio by putting it on a dummy load with a PEP reading meter and a monitoring receiver. 73

Thanks. Off topic, in my family tree there are 85 Odells. They are mostly, or were mostly in South Carolina. Many DNA matches on Ancestry. Who knows? Take care and stay safe. 73, Jim

It's good to see you again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Jim. The direction for my K3 was to go for four bars of ALC with the fifth flickering and then a small amount of compression. That's how I have mine set (the KX3 and KX2 also). 73 de AG7TX

Nice demo Jim, I keep telling people the mic gain is to far up. Even on CB you can't tell people to turn down their mic gain. Being to loud with a lot of background noise and being distorted in worse than being slightly quiet! I have seen some so bad it almost sounds like SSB but there is a carrier and they are on AM or FM. Doesn't help that they also over modulate. Screwdriver Experts!!!! They used to keep me busy though :-)

Good explanation Jim. Because of your previous videos I learned how to properly set my mic gain using the ALC and even though I run low power I get good audio reports from a stock out of box rig.

    HI Jim,
Happy Holidays to you and the family. All good info. The demos with the K3's show the effect very clearly. The ALC at 25% and compression at 5%, but no more than 10%. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U

Hi ,Jim, good video well explained, since i have my Heil PR 40 microphone with my Icom ic 7300 ,have never looked back, also i dont use a mixer, but a Presonus tubepre v2 pre amp is very well suited. Great advise on the ALC and comp settings, i brought a fm/ssb radio so i could fine tune the bass and treble settings, keep up the good work 73 from Rotterdam.

Thanks for this. Another issue is audio circuit headroom. Some radios will let you do whatever you like. Others however have low headroom. That is too much input, whether at mic level or line level, will overdrive some portion of the audio circuitry regardless of mic gain settings or compression. There's no rule as to where gain control must be, before or after a gain stage. Something to listen for is distortion even with a low mic gain & low compression seeing. Flex 1500 for example overloads easily. One needs to drive it carefully, then bring up gain (numerous places to add gain) to appropriate and desired levels.

As far as I know that tranceiver won't have an alc meter. As long as the magic screwdriver hasn't been inside that President, I.E. no tweaking and peaking, you should be fine.

Jim... Happy New Year! Like your new shack/studio setup. Really good job on the ALC/mic gain. I’ve always had a problem figuring when to use both or one of them . Makes a lot more sense now..... Thanks. Is there a way to find an SDR receiver on the internet and view your signal from afar to see your signal as others would see it? Possibly adjusting you alc/mic gain while in QSO with another station? Stay safe... look forward to your next videos...😁👍

Hi Jim ! Heard you on 20 again but wasn’t able to get in the extra class portion. Yet anyway. Yes you are totally correct about nets and the praising of horrid audio. This actually turned me away from most hf nets. Is that a smb7 mic? Sounds great! I noticed the passband expand while turning up the comp. so if a transceiver has a tx bandwidth of 50hz-2900, more compression will take it outside of this 2.9k window? I know some filters are looser than others. Looks like dirty IMD. I see that a lot with people running high alc with certain amplifiers. Merry Christmas bud.

Very good and useful video. Can you please show what can cause a CW signal to go wide? I've a neighbor a few miles away that I can hear all over the CW portion of the bands when he's on. Other nearby hams, I don't even notice. Thanks Jim, de WE2DX

My avatar, and observing it lightyears away. Through a polygonic multiple lens or a flatsurface - dumbell lens. Preceeds the same problem.. scattering is significant through adaptive medium arrangement. One can try and coalesce angular velocity as one does through a synchroprism in vision.. referencing to your compression set filtration electronic com (or cam) ponents ? Total n00b i am btw... thank you for sharing your luminescence . It is bright as day. Grtz

Thanks for the video Jim. I use an IC-7610 and set my ALC to 1/3 of the ALC scale without compression enabled. Then I enable compression and set it to about 3dB, but then my ALC goes a little bit higher. I leave my settings there. Would you recommend lowering the mic gain again to bring the ALC to 1/3? Hi Jim, always an interesting topic. What is the relationship of mic gain and proc as raising one bumps the other up or visa versa down. Why is this? Is this why we set mic gain at half to three quarters to allow for compression setup not to then bump ALC over scale? I don’t believe this increase is the same as adding gain via EQ setup that bumps up overall mic gain or is it?Thanks.

  • @1crazynordlander

Yes, I would hope someone would tell me that I was too distorted or too light. Two of the controllers on a net I frequent received new equipment for Christmas. One a new microphone and the other a new transceiver. They both sounded different and needed to make some adjustments and they did.

  • @kb6dxn

I don't use compression but I do look at my ALC setting, If I am chasing DX and it's a pileup I will bump up the amp to 1500 watts if need be or I will ride the tail end of the pileup..

there is no way this is happening with the IC7300, that thing is tight and you can't make the audio derail like when you had the compression at 20dB... I've seen in the IC7300 manual to keep the ALC between ¼ and ½ of the bar graph but you get 15-20 watts out... When the ALC goes right to the end of the ALC bar graph, sometime one red bar is lighting up and it sounds beautiful, no where near what we hear on that video...
The only thing that happends when you push the compressor to high is to pull ambiant background noise and get reduced gain when you start talking. Compressors are used to pull low levels signals and attenuate high levels. I can't drive my 7300 with such low ALC and compression. I usually run the compression to around 10dB and when this happens, the ALC is right at the end of the bar graph...
