  • In this video I share 5 challenges with menus for the visually impaired and I share examples of different ways visually impaired people figure out what they want to eat at a restaurant off the menu. I also share my tips on how to make a menu accessible for those who are visually impaired and blind. Those of us who are graphic designers it is our job to make our designs meet accessibility guidelines.

I'm Angela, a user experience and graphic designer who just so happens to be visually impaired! I was born with a rare eye condition called Sporadic Aniridia. I recently finished graduate school getting my Master of Design at the University of Washington. My research was focussed on inclusive design, universal design, accessibility. My specialty is on visual impairment and how designers can improve products and services for a wider range of people regardless of their certain circumstances. I hope you will come along on this journey with me. 💕

I have so much to say about this topic !! I could go on and on and on. We actually don’t go back to certain restaurants because of lighting. I hate that they always give my daughter a Braille menu, she has low vision but doesn’t do Braille. Granted sometimes they have them. I am just so glad my daughter has used so many apps to help her. Only place I have seen that actually had a menu for low vision is Starbucks.

I will have to look into Starbucks menu, that sounds great. I am curious what restaurants you have been to where they offer Braille menus. That is great to hear there are some places!

Great info! I think it'd be fun if you compared two printed menus as examples of good and bad design/accessibility.

Saw your post on flour, eggs and yeast and had to come over !! I also see you got your degree at UW, maybe you live near us?? We live outside of Seattle. I see you also want help with closed captions, I’ll be happy to help!! I’ll check your social media and contact you. Everyone should have cc. My daughter is deaf and visually impaired.

Yeah I am glad we crossed paths. That is awesome. I no longer live in Seattle as I have graduated! I love any help I can get with closed captioning, thank you. You can find me on Instagram or Facebook as Visually Impaired Designer as well.

Right now I’m trying to figure out cc for live steaming having a small channel, they only add it afterwards, so I’m thinking of using a tablet with maybe otter on it, so people can see them live.

Yeah that is something I haven't quite figured out either. I haven't done any livestreams yet because I am unsure how to make it work. I keep wanting to figure it out though. :)
