"Oben am jungen Rhein" ("High on the young Rhine") is the national anthem of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Written in the 1850s by Jakob Josef Jaunch, it is set to the melody of the British anthem, "God Save the King/Queen", which in the 19th century had been used for a number of anthems of German-speaking nations, including those of Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, and Switzerland.

Ah Liechtenstein, the lovely, tiny country that went to war with 80 soldiers and 81 came back.
@Turkeyball According to the story, in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 Liechtenstein sided with Austria and sent its army of 80 soldiers to war against Prussia. Not just all of them returned but one of them made an italian friend during the war and he came back with them.
@Turkeyball And did you know that Switzerland "launched war" against Liechtenstein three times since 1985?:D
@Turkeyball In 1985 the swiss army was testing anti-air rockets. One of the rockets was either malfunctioning or it was diverted from its course by the strong wind but it impacted in the Bannwald Forest in Liechtenstein and caused a fire. No one died and Switzerland paid a few million franks. Then in 1992 practicing swiss soldiers were ordered to build out an observation post near a small village called Triesenberg. For some reason their superiors didn't know that Triesenberg is located in Liechtenstein not in Switzerland. As there is no natural or man-made border between the two countries the soldiers reached the village without problem. They must have been surprised when the locals asked them what on earth are they doing there. Now, if armed soldiers cross the border of another country without permission, technically it means occupation. And the Liechtenstein leadership learnt about this only when the swiss apologized. And finally in 2007 171 practicing swiss soldiers got lost in the night and the rain. At least this was their explanation for why were they one and a half kilometer deep within the territory of Liechtenstein.
@Turkeyball Perhaps they want to remind them sometimes why they are paying Switzerland for their country's defense :D

I like kings of small nations, they just seem to be nicer and more happy with their ancient small lands.
There's this thing called delusions of grandeur which basically means a person in much greater power on a world stage think they're more powerful than they actually are. It's often said that people are nicer when they have less, because they weren't just given stuff.
With a small country, they can get to know their people better. I mean, the Prince would want to cultivate somewhat closer relationships with his citizens.
@@paolotorres8537 My father told me, that at the "Fürstenfest" (our countries national holiday) the Prince would walk around with some cops and just randomly run off to talk to some people he'd recognised. My father even sat at a stand and had to make room for him once.

Do you mean the Holy Roman Empire, which wasn't an empire or a sovereign state? The German Empire is a 19th century construct. And this anthem is from Britain, not from any German shit, as far as real history is concerned.

Lichtenstein is a facinating country, since it has a monarch with real powers (who's not here just to appear once in a while, as in Belgium or England) and a democracy worthy of that name.

Of course there’s democracy in Liechtenstein-Direct Democracy. Like the Swiss. It’s an integral part of Liechtenstein’s culture. Most laws are made by referendums, which can be enacted even without the legislature getting involved.
@@paolotorres8537 I though that Liechtenstein was absolute monarchy, but it seems that I was wrong. Well, thank you for correcting me!
@@papasmerfvlog623 it’s a semi-constitutional Monarchy, meaning the Prince does actually rule, but shares power with the elected parliament. How it works is that the Prince does have the final say in government policy and can dismiss government officials. Heck, he can call parliament to convene in the event of an emergency. He can also veto any law passed by the parliament, but likewise any law he enacts can be subject to referendum.
