I am 60, when I was 16 my parents bought me an entire Craftsman tool set, and 3 stage tool chest. I still have all of them and use them on a very regular basis. Great tools back then, but since I have never had to replace them, I have no idea what the new ones are like

I have broken 3 "made in India" craftsman wrenches in the last couple years...I've now started buying harbor freight wrenches for the lifetime warranty in their Pittsburgh brand...I refuse to buy quality tools for my job, as they always get a target painted on them to be stolen...

Man I’ve never broke a Pittsburgh pro wrench socket or ratchet. I stopped spending tons of cash on hand tools ages ago and started using Pittsburgh. Pro stuff. Their quality in tools has went up a ton.

Something I've experienced with similar type of ratchets and not limited to any specific brands is that the lock/release button comes loose and fall out eventually thus meaning that it does not hold the socket or extension in place anymore. Unfortunately that is the way almost all ratchets are made nowadays.

I stopped dealing with sears and craftsmen when I went to order some parts for a lawn tractor and they said I had to pay with a credit card that they didn’t take cash and you see how it’s worked out for them I now have a cub cadet lawn tractor and pay cash for my tools at harbor freight

About everything you do on a farm or tractor is a 1/2 inch drive job. If a 1/2 inch drive will go in there, use 1/2 inch drive tools.

Most of my Craftsman tools are from before 1995 so they are pretty good tools. I did buy a set of torx/hex bit sockets about 5 years ago and they are the softest, crappiest tools ever. I'll buy Harbor Freight before them. Now and then I hit pawn shops and pick up some snap on tools at greatly reduced prices.

A while ago I bought a few little Craftsman kits that were on super sale at an Ace hardware, a little 1/4in bit set and a 3/8 little Metric set. I put them in my car just to have them.
While the 1/4in bits were iffy (one of the Phillips bits did not stand up to abuse and was basically ground down in like 10 minutes, though that may have just been because it was Phillips), the ratchets themselves have actually been fairly decent, especially considering they were only a few bucks. I used the 3/8 and beat the hell out of it going through the entire process of putting a water pump into a 2001 Ford Ranger; I hit it a few times, dropped it, got nasty fluids all over it, still works fine with no real noticeable wear.
I wont depend on it to carry me through rebuilding an entire car, but as Wranglestar has said in the past, cheap tools have their place; spend a couple dollars on it, throw it in the car/truck, the boat, the shed, in a nightstand, next to your desk, under the welcome mat, in the bathroom, anywhere you could think you may need it so you aren't hoofing it without immediate access to your main tools.

  • @paulmatteson9387

Hey Chuckie! Screw that Crapsman stuff. Unless you have buecoup bucks to buy Snapon, buy Tekton. Much of it is made in usa by a Christian Palestinian family. Justin Amash, former congressman's dad started the company as Michigan Industrial Tools years ago. Lifetime warranty and they do it through the mail.....faster than the tool truck.
I think that Tekton is occupying the space that Craftsman used to have, although they don't make or sell every tool like Craftsman did. I think a leaner, centralized warranty program through the interenetz and the mail is the way of the future....for good or for bad. It turns what used to be same-day replacement down at the Sears store to same-week replacement through the mail. For most of us that is still much better than waiting for the tool truck and still having to wait another week or in the case of some other brands, no warranty at all.
One caveat: If you need flare nut wrenches, Snap on is better than anybody's.

Craftsman tools are garbage and have been made in China for the last 15 years. Years ago I told myself I would never ever again buy a Craftsman tool of any type. Pittsburgh from harbor freight is so much better quality and much cheaper too, plus they warranty tools without any questions or bothering you for receipts that are likely several years old and lost or more
