- If our recent 'Old School' challenge made us realise one thing in particular, it's that we used to be RUBBISH at fishing! We discuss just how poor we were along with plenty of throwbacks to baits and tactics that we used back in the day in our latest Winning Ways Rodcast.

It's amazing.i stopped fishing at around the era in question when my daughter was born then returned to the modern day fishing. It's mind boggling.
I started up again last year after about 8 years away from it and I agree it’s not the same but I think it’s better now but just abit expensive 😂
Great video Lads, it was nice hearing your views on how things in fishing have changed over the years, I've seen many of the changes you mentioned in my 35 plus years as a pleasure angler and have seen some things make a return.i think something that will make a short return in a few years time will be the pole feeder
I fished the open at Weston Pools on Sunday, the bloke next to me won using the method feeder on the pole. I didn’t stand a chance, he obliterated the match
The best podcast around, and I totally agree with you all, the development of the angler's mind and the adaptability is the greatest in the sporting world, no sportsman has as many different variables in there game that needs be sussed out to compete..now let's please have a "Flat float challenge"...keep up the amazing content 👌
silvers definately100% i get more feedback from my silvers matchfestival than i do from 6 glebe matches.
moving to what has changed. i am 73 fishing for 50 years and i can tell you equipment and line have made a massive difference . now your videos are taking even my fishing to a different level ( dont tell daddy may i want his £1) i have to thank you and all anglers who take the time making these videos .
I think there is two distinct things. Match fishing and Commercial Professional Fishing. For us mere mortals who fish matches on a variety of venues, carp puddles, rivers, canals, lakes and the like, the evolution is slower because winning is a bonus, getting better is aspirational. The sort of match anging you guys do, is in a puddle full of one of the greediest species of fish on earth. To succeed in that professional environment you HAVE to find the edge, and as Jamie says its about the tiniest of advantages, and stringing it all together.
I stopped fishing 24/25 years ago because the commercial carp waters were becoming popular for matches and I just didn't enjoy them. A lot of what you describe in this video is what put me off. I'm starting back up and the changes and tactics that have happened are huge even on canals and natural still waters. I feel like I'm going to be starting from scratch again but am looking forward to it!
Nothing better than fishing 🎣 with a nice joint 👍
Predicting Graphene poles super light and ultra strong.
Completely agree with Rich and Jamie. I'm a member of some private lakes near me, and the majority of fish are silvers with the odd carp no F1s, and match weights rarely go over 40lb unless you get the bream going. It's made my match fishing a lot more enjoyable because it was becoming monotonous catching 100-200lb of F1s and carp every match. Would like to see Andy's idea of a see through top kit though lol...😂😂
I've got allot to learn,,, I'm still in 90's robot mode,,, look forward to it tho.. Good video lads 👌👌👍
Cracking video gents! My prediction is natural water matches!
Great chat again lads and I think we will see a commercial premier league in the near future
I think a lot of pleasure anglers , myself included are still using the methods talked about. I suppose as long as we still have a good days fishing, it doesn't matter. It's the competitive edge that drives the change. New methods and equipment eventually feed into the pleasure market, but it's slow and cost driven. I do think some commercials are forgetting about pure pleasure anglers and it's a shame. Match fishing at the top level should have as much luck taken out of it as possible, skill should always win out.
I agree with the sentiment at the end... its too easy on commercial carp venues its boring... I even fly fish to increase the challenge but there are so many fish and they are so hungry. No challenge...
Personally no desire to catch 300+ pounds of carp but I acknowledge the skill and effort put in to be able to do it I do occasionally fish commercials purely for pleasure and the number of fish makes for a great day out no matter what skill levels and the amount of tackle the angler has what I would like to see would be a match run like your 3 fish challenge maybe 20 / 30 carp + silvers no swapping fish etc
Still use Shimane aero reels for feeder fishing perfect had them years never let me down
Pile it in the margins so the fish think ya leaving.. that was my old thoughts 😂
I’m with Rich on the silverfish one. We need more commercials who host just silverfish matches all year round instead of just winter. Would be a good change 👍
It’s been tried but pleasure anglers aren’t interested, so owners don’t bother as it just costs them money.
There's a fishery by me opening one can't wait
@@pellowd not so much pleasure anglers, more match, also depends on the location and the stock/size of the fish. I wouldn’t mind catching 10oz - 1lb roach, ide etc all day especially on the wag😎
@@andrewstubbs4385 Hallcroft turned one of their lakes in to silverfish (Bridge i think) only a few years ago. Matches were great on it, but no-one else fished it - pleasure anglers want to catch carp. I think the owner even said "fish it or ill fill it with carp" - few years later and its got carp in it
Great chat / vid.
Will see-through top kits need see-through elastics ?
I love fishing (pleasure) but can’t keep up with all the changes…….must be getting old. !!
Andy, surely see-through top kits wouldn’t protect your elastic from the Sun. 😉🤣
Plus the fact your fluorescent elastic can be seen 😆
Interesting as always.
The 'speed' fishing for 4 to 10 lb carp coupled with 500lb plus match weights, does not appeal to me. I appreciate its a skill to catch that weight and its not a lot different to catching 100 roach for 20lb! I prefer to catch the roach, or silvers as I think it's a higher level of skill required. Never mind the dozen keep nets required!
Fish health and wellbeing should be paramount and an area that has improved in many commercially run operation however, there is still room for improvement.
I don't agree with higher skill for 20lb of roach, actually I find 20lb of roach easier to catch on some natural venues in winter, but taking that 20lb to 40lb is the skill, so taking 300lb of carp to the 500lb is the skill level upgrade. That's what sets anglers apart.
@@WoolavyLeeWilliams I suppose, it all comes down to preference. Would you rather catch 20lb of roach,or 300lb of carp?
@@pleasantville4529 300lbs of carp
@@robintaylor7374 I'm happy for you. Tight lines.
@@pleasantville4529 300lb of carp where 100lb is a decent weight. 20lb of roach where 10lb is good.
Can you do a challenge where the guys do a shot after each fish, last man standing wins 😎
Andy would win 🥇
Skins!!! I have a vague memory of using them at Cheshire Fishing, but can't recollect what they were. Were they like a spongy pellet?
For me I love commercials, fish are there to be had. Once you understand how to catch them, you can get some mega weights. Here's my but. I do love that buzz and uncertainty you get from a natural venue. I'd like to see more purpose built commercial naturals, if you know what I mean?
Milder winters are going to be the biggest change. And as far as my preference I think 200lbs is the sweet spot. Busy day,not a stupid amount of keepnets required and the bait bill isn't huge.
The grumpy old men of fishing 😁😁😁
Love these conversations they have, actually really informative...
As a follow on to how the silvers behave differently in commercials last week I was on my regular puddle and we were catching large skimmers shallow, now the Smitty's natural feeding location, but that's how much competition there was for the food...
Awesome!
Statler and Waldorf.....those of a certain age will know.
When you say that big weights are going become unwanted and silver fishing will become better I think this is true I love catching carp but I would prefer I day catching many different kinds of fish than just carp don’t get me wrong love a carp and keep them in the lakes but I love variety this is why I love drumble at cudmore there load of different fish but some big carp aswell
I would say in five years bait application and bait types will be the difference to what it is now. Such as there will be alot more controls on what you can use and how much. I also think fish care will become alot more comfortable for fisherman and the old land without nets and keepnets will disappear to a point.
Well there's definitely a rising number of snotty comments on videos and fb posts from people deriding "puddles," so there might eventually be a push back to rivers and canals. The trouble I have with that is my nearest river is liquid algae on it's best days, crap soup at it's worst, and seems to only contain roach and perch to 4oz. My nearest canals are either full of junk and pike, or neglected for decades and silted right up.
Andy that is 100% correct look at the sun to make you sneeze
"photic sneeze reflex (PSR) or the ACHOO (autosomal dominant compulsive helio-ophthalmic outbursts of sneezing) syndrome".
It only works on some people. You either have the reaction or you don't.
Tried pheromones way back in the mid ninties, mrs trimmed her cheeky bits then I mixed in my boilie mix very disappointed with the results, thought I had the magic formula, back to the drawing board since
interesting they compare F1 to fishing, except in F1 the cars always get too good to they handicap them, no turbos, smaller engines, limiting downforce etc etc, so no different from banning certain fishing techniques such as no float, or limiting pole lengths etc
I would be interested to take your thoughts on carp match fishing out here in Australia. The fish seen averse to coming shallow, and the light feeding approach doesn't seem to hold the fish in your peg or attract enough fish in to put a weight together. Natural waters essentially so not stocked. But very much all carp and goldfish (no silver fish bar the odd mullet)
Pellets aren't really a thing over here sadly bar chicken pellets and cat/dog food.
Fish on natural venues are likely to behave much differently to those on commercials. Especially if they aren't pressured, some natural venues in England actually respond very well to pellets due to being pressured by carp anglers😊
Maybe not see through top kits, but colours that would make them less obvious when the fishes are peering up from the murky depths perhaps, or break up the outline and make them less obvious. Camouflaged top kits! There must be someone out there who has studied fishy vision and how they see the world above and could advise.
I think we will hit a point where we rip fish out like in tuna fishing, no elastic solid poles throwing them in keep nets, then we all take a sensible pill, realise we are ruining the pleasure of fishing and revert to elastics again. Carp will get too big or die off with disease and we will go back to putting lilly pads in, tench crusians and skimmers 🥰
I think this video could have been greatly improved for us lesser anglers if after criticising what you done wrong &what some of us are still doing would be to have then explained how you have now rectified those faults ? Maybe a future video
There's loads of videos over on our main channel (Winning Ways) that are sure to help you with rectifying the errors we used to make 😊
Does anyone remember You could buy pheromones in plastic vials back in the day🤔😁we used no floats self hooking 20+years ago at Risby lakes👍agree with the big weights, I've fished places where you needs big weights, not enjoyable or satisfying really😐
how you would approach shallow fishing for carp and f1's on pole in matches where you aren't allowed to mug slap or tap
Five years time push button automatically winding reels.
Are they saying match anglers of the past didn't know what they were doing or just commercial anglers?
Obviously we're talking about it from a commercial perspective, but i'm sure it applies to nearly all angling, if you could go back a decade with what you know now, you'd be winning a lot more matches or catching a load more fish.
Everyone will probably look back in another ten years time thinking we're useless now.
NEW CHALLENGE IDEA 💡
fish a match with a minimum bait limit, starts with ‘X’ Amount of bait, and you must feed it all before the end of the match.
Can someone tell me if a back shot when pole fishing contributes to the weight needed for the float or is it separate from that?
ua-cam.com/video/Dlm1EMkpjJk/v-deo.html
I predict a different strain of fish being developed
Weights are too big now. Agree with Rich. Fish welfare will come to be an issue.
If Andy has a see through top kit. Won’t the fish just see his elastic!? 😂😂😂😂
See through elastic it is then!
13 dura slip does it!
Todber Manor - 700+lbs - 4 hours. Beating the 6-hour match record. Discuss.
Jack is a quality angler, does lots of things very well.
180lb an hour of 3lb average or 15lb average are completely different.
People say stupid/daft/silly. But bleak fishing is not much different just different sized fish and nets required.
Whatever floats boats.
Camera instead of drop shot?
Tiny Bluetooth camera (modern technology)
In 5 years time there will be a super league for professional full time anglers to compete in, and they will not be allowed on the open matches.
In 10 years all fishing will be banned as it will be seen by the public as cruel to the fish.
The discussion on banning fishing has been around for years but never acted upon as I think there have been studies done on fish cruelty and has proven just the opposite
What happed to kiren rich and Neil machin?
Has rich turned into a ghost?
I think over 1000lb in a match
I'd like to see someone catch 100lb of eel's🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🎣🎣🎣🎣
you say you were crap at fishing, but you were probably still the best at that level of angling?
