This isn’t widely known but Keith Richards said in his book that he had an incident as a kid where one of his fingers was cut off at a weird angle at the tip. I used to love woodworking but the thought of losing a finger was something I could never shake. I'm an engineer and one of the hardest problems to solve in any field of engineering is human
error. We solved how to do most things a while ago, now we just have to figure out how to do it safely. Whenever I build products, 20% of the work is making the thing turn on when you press the Start button and 80% making sure it doesn't catastrophically fail in any number of possible ways. A huge part of that second thing is accounting for all sorts of possible errors that people might make with your product.
No one is perfect and we all make mistakes, sometimes incredibly serious mistakes, and I knew it would only be a matter of time before I made one.

The sawmill doing that is usually from a sudden change in the woods hardness. In my milling experience it has always been like a know or just a grain change and then it over corrects and goes all wavy. Another thing that can cause it is a change in speed of the milling or going to fast. Great video by the way

Great job. I can definitely sympathize on the finger issue. I recently finished a table that damaged fingers on both hands. I was so upset and it started affecting my work. Then I realized that it’s not so much the “worth it” factor, or even the pain or physical inconvenience. It was that I felt so stupid for not remembering to adhere to my own shop rules about safety and focus.
Question: Why didn’t you just peel or cut that last run of veneer all the way down at the particle board line and the just plane it down to the desired thickness?

My grandfather grew up in the Great Depression and survived WW2. When he was building his deck with my mom when she was a teenager, he took the safety off of the saw, and a knot in a piece of wood made it jerk and cut off his finger. He just calmly said f*** and then sat down silently waiting for the ambulance. Couldn’t be me but some people are just built different I guess. I’d love to get into carpentry, but hearing that incident my whole life has left me too scared to touch a saw.

You can absolutely make it your own, but those two channels are excellent in the way they keep the attention of someone who isn’t really interested in building anything themselves (me). I think better audio goes a long way too but wait until you have a bigger following before you try and justify an expensive mic purchase. After I saw a guy at work shave 4 of his fingers halfway down using a joiner, I always use push paddles now.

all these things you did to finish those fingers, the cut out between the 2 wood fingers works way better than what my teacher in HS does, or at least tells us to do..

What you really needed to do with those veneer cuts, was support the piece once it's cut. At 4:10 you can see the cut veneer collapsing onto the slab. This is (A) giving sawdust nowhere to go, (B) pinching the back of the blade. Right at this point you want to put some wedges in there to support it, then as the saw moves down, progressively add some wedges into the sides to shim the veneer up off the slab.

So I noticed you’re getting comments from armchair sawyers, and I thought since you gave up a finger for this project you might like some thoughts from an experienced sawyer. I’ve been using a bandmill since 2009, it’s given me lots of opportunity to ruin a lot of wood lol. I’ve sawn in the range of 200-250,000 bd ft for context, so I think I’ve made almost every mistake there is to make. Anyways, I have had that same issue when sawing large, partially frozen green logs. When the logs are thawed or fully frozen it’s no problem, but partly frozen is a pain because of the significant mix of densities between the thawed and frozen wood. I think this is the same issue you are having because of the resin. The things I do to help with the issue is:
    - increase blade tension,
    - run a lower tooth / hook angle, if you’re using Wood-Mizer blades try a 4 degree,
    - slow the feed speed down by about 25 percent and to keep the blade speed up.

Thank you very much. Yes I think the resin/wood is one of the main reasons. This wood was incredibly dense and the resin be even more so, I would imagine gives a kind of frozen effect. I appreciate the expertise rather than just stating something obvious and then criticizing haha

Brutal , I have a feeder for the jointer. 2 cents to stop next injury don't have 2 guys on a table saw its wrong on a lot of levels .Just break the sheet down and use a post stick for thin strips .

They managed to reattach mine somehow and I gained about 85% mobility back over time, but it was touch & go for a few weeks, in which time I made complete peace with losing the function of my right middle finger, and honestly a single digit isn't that important in the grand scheme of things.
