Small Axe vs. Big Tree

  • In this video I take on a tough old Virginia pine that has been damaged by a recent ice storm. I put just under 600 swings (584) in with this council tool boy's axe. It was very exhausting work, even with the 2.25lb axe. If you look closely at the palm swell towards the end of the video, you will see blood from my hand on the handle. This was a learning experience as well as a bench mark to assess my abilities currently while dealing with health issues.

    Man I smiled watching that tree fall. Awesome work. That smaller axe did some good work.

    Impressive feat of endurance. It was interesting to see your swing change once you realized you weren’t going to power through it in a couple blows. Especially on the undercut, you started to look like a guy at work-that’s always my goal when felling. Just take it easy like I had to do this all day. I only wish you would have talked to us at the end. Maybe tell us how it surprised you or not. If and when you started wanting a heavier axe with a wider bit, and when you would have swapped back to the light axe. Maybe do a follow before you start bucking it. Great video keep at it.

      Honestly Kevin, I have already filmed a follow up vid going over the experience. But you're right on the money when it comes to your assessment of how I changed throughout the cut. Alot has to do with being tired. Plus the wood changed significantly the further I chopped. Several mistakes were made as well, but I managed to chop my way through them. Thanks for the comment!

      Good to hear we’ll get some follow up. On big trees the wood gets dense after you get passed the outer sapwood. Gotta take much smaller chips, and I’d rather have a much thinner blade when felling any trees really, but especially trees 10+. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

    Really enjoyable video. Perfect music selection. Your endurance chop was reminesenct of the early scene in the movie where they are running through the mountains seemingly for ages.

      She was a tough old tree at least in the center. Not gonna lie, I wish I had used a slightly heavier axe, but the little council got the job done. I appreciate it Joey!

    I think I've watched this about 5 times since u posted. Not only well put together with the mohicans but I think the concept is cool. A good axeman test for both accuracy and endurance. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this one.👍

    Nice work, that heartwood is a real swing-stopper. Your handle looked a little thick in relation to the small head and allows that traveling shock wave to terminate in your hands. It would be cool to see some close up slow-mo clips at the point of impact in your next video.

      I'll keep the close up shots in mind for the next chopping vid. Hopefully I'll get a better camera soon. And to be honest, that is my thinnest handle. I can barely hold it it's so thin. The Virgina pines near me a notorious for having rock solid resin rings in the middle

    • @lifebehindtheaxe3835

      I was bleeding pretty good on my bottom hand. My hands have gotten soft recently. I had to attempt to fix the palm swell and make it a bit more comfortable, and in doing so I left it very rough. Chewed through my hand about 350 swings in. Thank you for the comment!

    I wouldn't call that a small axe, more like a medium axe. When I think of small axe, I think of Gransfors Small forest axe.

    • @lifebehindtheaxe3835

      It's the lightest and narrowest bit I own. Just barely over 2 lbs. What's the weight of the small forest axe?

    • @lifebehindtheaxe3835
      @lifebehindtheaxe3835  3 роки тому

      I still would consider the 1.5 to 2.5lb range small. Then 3 to 4.5lb range medium. And 5lb + to be large. I've had the pleasure to swing 7lb, 13.5 inch wide hard hit axes, so I'd say my opinion is a little skewed when it comes to the lighter axes lol
