Wild Turkey Hen Assembly Call to Poults

  • Mother Wild Turkey has seven cute babies or "Poults" browsing for food along the roadside in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When concerned (by us gawking at them) and wanting to get the little ones organized and headed into the cover of the woods she uses this assembly call and they follow her. Listen carefully and you can hear a few poults respond. After a bit they come back out and continue browsing as mother remains wary, but not overly concerned about us watching them. The danger or alarm call for a rapid retreat into the forest can be heard at:

We just used this video to convince two chicks to come out to be rescued from a road grate potential catastrophe. Four of them fell in, two were easy to catch, and two ran as far as they could down dead end tunnels and nothing but this video could convince them to come back out.

I am currently trying to save a baby turkey that got into my rooster pen somehow. No mama for 2 days. I went to TSC and got it some company.. 4 baby chicks. They are doing great, but he is getting weaker. I raise chickens. Heat lamp, cricket pieces, mealworms, beetles. He's just worn himself out with stress. He is happy to sleep curled in my slipper in his little tote environment.
Today has been a very bad day. He is so weak. I have been "forcing" tiny drops of water down his throat every now and then, very gently of course. I'm keeping him warm cupped in my hands for the last couple hours which he seems to enjoy. I play this video every 15 minutes or so and he responds with weak little peeps. Saying prayers for this little one that at least if he is going to go, he has comfort and we love him as one of God's sweet little creatures.

That's too bad poor little guy. I've heard it is not good to try and force fluid or food on them as it may get in their lungs, but it may just be too young to take some kinds of food. Not an expert on wild turkeys so I'd recommend calling a rehab place for advice. Bless you for helping the little thing out as best you could as it would have died right away. BB

@@MyBackyardBirding yeahhhhhh. I may have killed it without knowing this watering advice first. It didn't live more than 4 days. I feel super terrible that I killed it with kindness 😭😭. The chicks and ducks I got to keep it company are doing fantastic, though. Silver lining. Poor little thing. I will know next time though. Thank you for the tip.

This is so sweet! hearing this makes me realize I've probably heard a mamma turkey calling her babies near us, but didn't know at that time. We have had up to 11 turkey hens in and around our yard. This is a great video!

I came across a turkey hen with her little ones , she pretended to be injured and tried to distract me from the babies classic bird behavior to get the predator away from the babies

I filmed a roughed grouse last year that made all sorts of strange sounds to distract - very interesting.
