These two old geezers wrote the book. They have been there and done it all. Two living rock 'n roll legends. A hundred years from now Pete Townshend will be remembered as one of the greatest composers of 20th century music.
However, I must say I don't really like how the interviewer tries to intellectualize all of it. Rock 'n roll is not about being intellectual. It's about emotion, inspiration, trying to create something out of nothing with four entirely different individuals and have that special musical chemistry and connection. If you try to intellectually analyze it too much you take out the magic, it's just not what rock 'n roll is about. It's typical bladibla of a music critic or music journalist.
Both Pete and Roger seem so healthy, and that makes me happy. They're getting up there, and I absolutely dread the day they leave us. Pete is an idol of mine. I'd donate an organ to meet him. That generation of incredible rockers are dropping like flies, but Pete seems so lucid, and healthy. He hasnt seemed to have wavered at all, it appears, and I hope he has another 20+ years with us. Roger has always been healthy and that basically assures me he's not going anywhere any time soon. I love these guys. I like to think that Keith and John gave Pete and Roger all the years they missed. That would be beautiful. Cheers Pete & Rog! Long live rock!
Spot on post. I have a lot of admiration for Pete and Roger. Fortunately for me, I was a teen in their best years but I'm several years younger but as you say, considering what they've been through, they shouldn't look this good! I've just turned 70 and Roger looks no older than me. The good thing is. They didn't die before they got old!! Keep rocking guys. Pity Moon is not around though... Sorely missed
@@Topherlux53 John Entwistle too. Bass master. Two completely original and unrivaled craftsmen of their respective instruments, John and Keith. A drum and bass rhythm section so ahead of its time. @mjb0183 nice! I love chatting with people who get The Who. Obviously, they're a top-tier classic rock band, and most people like the Who tunes they hear on the radio. Then there's people like me. Die hard, deep into their catalog fan(atics). I love The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zep, etc etc. Again, top-tier classic rock bands, but The Who have somehow dug further into my psyche, my soul. The four incredibly iconic and extremely different members are just a bonus charming aspect of the group. Each, top-tier at their respective instruments/roles. I feel like I know them personally. I play guitar. I learned all the classic rock band and old school 80s metal tunes when I was a kid, but the Who's stuff was too hard for me back then. I couldn't get a grip on it yet because Pete plays very unique chord phrasings, and regardless of what others say, his lead playing is so tasteful, never overdone, played when needed, and emotionally driven to serve the song. His writing is the best in the business. Hands down. Live, in their prime, no one could touch them. Quadropheina was the soundtrack to my teenage years. All their stuff was, but that album really spoke to me. Years after my early guitar years, I got some decent chops under my belt and started learning Pete's stuff and his approach to the guitar. Now, when I pick up a guitar anywhere, I usually play some obscure Who tunes. I love them. The greatest rock band of all time! Long live rock! Cheers!
I met Pete Townshend back stage at a Who concert in 1968. He was so gracious, and taught me the chords for “Substitute”. Pete’s solo albums in addition to the More widely known Who material became Incredibly helpful for our soul. Thanks so much and may god bless Pete Townshend and all his music! Yes, and Roger Daltry was there too, lol. I was a 17 yr old fan, and when I went back stage, Roger was smiling and joviall Roger Daltry, thank you!!! Pre-Monterey/Woodstock fan! Long live the Who and their music!!!
The conflicting personalities are part of what make The Who unique. Die hard Who fans have always identified very strongly with the internal conflict and tension of the band... Pete recognised it very early on, and eventually brought it to life in Quadrophenia, about a young fan who looks at The Who onstage and sees the four extremes of his personality reflected back at him.
Thank you for the comment, at least somebody else understands the concept and the word play behind the word Quadrophenia. A person cannot be a true artist, unless they are able to utilise as many different media available to them for example paint sculpture music writing poetry et cetera et cetera playing perhaps even dance whatever. Pete Townsend always has been an artist and continues to develop and will do for as long as he lives.
Mr Pete Townsend and Mr Roger Daltrey. Two great men. Two legends. I'm in my late fifties. These guys have been my heroes since I was a little kid in the late 60s. Thank you Pete and thank you Roger for all that you have achieved and for all that you have done for ordinary men like me. And love as always to those other great and wonderful now departed men, Keith and John.
Pete was always ahead of the curve. The Who were a core part or major influencers of the British Invasion, Arena Rock, Godfathers of Punk, Britpop, and influenced Electronic. I also remember Pete had some very big solo hits in the early '80s. Their music was indispensable for some 57 years & counting. I read Pete's autobio. Loved it... but I cannot find my copy! Maybe I'll rebuy. I also met Pete a couple times in Portland, OR, in late 1996, the second time with his road manager, Bill Curbishley. It was just before The Who started their American tour for _Quadrophenia._ I was not able to make the show, but it's a great memory.
The remaining members of The Who and Beatles need to get together and form the Whotles. Roger singing, Paul on Bass and vocals, Pete on Guitar, and Ringo on Drums would work.
I agree totally I don't want to die knowing that I have no idea what I mean except I would love to hear keath and Pete and you would be in the presence of greatness

I went to a Who concert in Denver for $3.50. The promoter, Barry Fey, told us the band arrived at the airport as the sun was setting over the mountains and told him they wanted to stay and do a second concert the next day. This was in a venue that held, at most, 3,000. So intimate, I thought Daltrey might hit me in the head when he swung his microphone. They played enough for an entire, satisfying concert. Then, Keith Moon tapped his cymbal stand with his drumstick and said, "Tut tut. This is an opera." They launched into Tommy, start to finish! What a spectacular, memorable night! It frankly spoiled me for all the overpriced, under-performed concerts that followed from other bands. Roger, Pete, do you remember that sensational time?
Am 54 nearly & THE WHO have been my favourite band since I got into music at 10 years old. My music collection goes from A -Z but THE WHO are always my most admired band & Mr Townshend is an absolutely genius. Collectively from the 60s they had a great explosive sound. 👍🇬🇧🎸🎤🥇
With the major ups and downs that this man has been through, it's really, really cool to hear him feel comfortable and centered. I'm sure Rachel had quite a hand in that. This is a great interview!

I saw The Who live at the Charlton Football Ground when they headlined The Who Put The Boot In festival around 74 ..But I could never put my head around smashing up guitars and drums. As Pete said , guitars that would take an ordinary working class kid years and years to save up for...Wonderful to hear Pete and Roger reminiscing. This interview was focussed on The Who Sell Out , but I think Tommy was their most important album.
What a great interview with fantastic insight in the early days of Townshend with The Who. Pete and Roger so energetic even on remote interviews. Fabulous!
Gotta love Pete’s interviews. Such a deep guy. Roger’s bit was a wonderful surprise. I’ve read both their autobiographies. Great job by the interviewer too. Thank you.
I assume everybody was.using iPhones as the show was sponsored by Apple. The sound quality says a lot about their characters. Pete is a musical scholar and record producer so has great sound. Roger has regular video call sound, so is obviously a regular guy.
Ok yeah, I've been a Who fan since I was a teenager, but what an articulate, clever and inspirational guy Mr Townshend is. A true rock god if there ever was one.
New Vaudeville Band did a Coke jingle in 1967 on the heels of "Winchester Cathedral". I met Daltrey when I first saw The Who on March 30, 1968 in Westbury, New York. He autographed the promo poster showing the group's picture. Fabulous concert!
I was lucky enough to see the who in their infancy and have been a massive fan ever since, i remember one gig in the old Leeds bus depot, we were at the front and i got a bit of Pete,s Telecaster when decided to ram the speakers.
Was able to see the a few years ago, it was fantastic, even though Roger had to take breaks. They had just started their tour up again, after he was sick for so long. Still fantastical, we got lots of Townshend solos Anyone else love highlander series? with great Who music and roger as an immortal, we were sold 🤣
Most powerful Who moment, for me: The last few concerts but probably the most recent Quadrophenia show (circa 2014) with Dr. Jimmy & The Rock, when the Twin Towers fall, love The Zak!
I wish Keith and the Ox were still with them and playing just like the Stones are playing concerts today. I wish they would do a Biopic Movie of Petes life or the Forming of the WHO behind the scenes in the beginning. I would pay to see that Movie. Respects Pete, RH DSD
Don’t care what anybody has said about Pete in the past at all. He is a genuine and good hearted man. He made his bad mistakes and wasn’t found guilty. He paid his dues in life and is a changed man. He has a good heart
You can really see the political differences between Roger and Pete, and even the difference in their musical perceptions, yet they have been able to form such a deep relationship. Incredible.
It's strange watching 2 generations talking about music and other things Who related like this for an hour. The Who were so original in composition, I always felt The Beatles and Stones were rooted in more conservative pop composition in the mid 60's. The Who were in New Zealand 1968 with The Small Faces and Paul Jones. Radio Hauraki was great back then, the voice of our youths.
The Who essentially started hard rock, The Beatles and Stones were pop music , writing 1 hit throw away top of the charts.songs. The bands that followed were Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath , Led Zeppelin etc
The interviewer has a bit of intelligence but just as Townshend is about to make a brilliant point or reveal something we have not heard before, this guy interrupts him. Arrrrrrrrgh! Pete was saying that when young he looked at his band in a "punk" way and he was going to elaborate. Alas, we will never know. A lot of interviewers make this mistake.
To me, the fact that Pete and Roger still don't have a deep relationship even after knowing each other for almost 60 years is one of the funniest things ever
'Summertime Blues' on the 'ODDS 'n' SODS' re-issue is studio recorded, and incomparable, even next to their own live versions. especially for '67.why it wasn't released on the initial LP, is a mystery. put it on and turn it up!
@@rjlorenz1 Do you also like the Live at Leeds version ? It’s got that “nobody does it like The Who” quality to it that their live stuff always had. Pete calls Mose Allison a “jazz sage” and then they nearly blow your hair off with their rock version. Moon is at his best in this one.
@@davidmaynard1530 Sure I do, but the one I pointed out is less well known...I found it to be a memorable "unreleased" track. As a Who fan, I must say that they release an overwhelming number of versions of their original studio releases (e.g. I just spotified the 5 hour version of The Who Sell Out), but that version of Young Man Blues stands out in my mind. I sure like the full version of Live at Leeds with Tommy, etc; I think I have the 2001 version.
The Who have always been a part of my life and always will be until the end of the beginning... Sorry I had to throw a Beatles lyrics in the end there lol Love them both.
Keith Moon, the Mod, living a life of higher duty or purpose? As a musician, yes. Beyond that? He was the original wild man with no limits. Many broken hotel rooms back then can attest to that.
I'm a billion ages past you A million years behind you too A thousand miles up in the air A trillion times I've seen you there Your hair is golden mine is gray You walk on grass it turns to hay Your blood is blue and your eyes are red My body strains but but my nerve is dead
Zane Lowe made this a great interview, especially Townshend. Always interesting, if not a bit narcissistic. Daltrey still has that streak of the street fighter going on. Excellent point about all four being so different. Entwhistle once called Daltrey “an ego with legs”. And, don’t forget ....... Radio London reminds you : Go to the church of your choice.

Yeah, Pete. Joe Walsh gave you a Gretsch. You smashed it on TOTP.
Thank you 😁 for all the years of good music. 5 star , legions of rock and roll.😁🤙
I wish Keith and the Ox were still with them and playing just like the Stones are playing concerts today. I wish they would do a Biopic Movie of Petes life or the Forming of the WHO behind the scenes in the beginning. I would pay to see that Movie. Respects Pete, RH DSD

Terrific interview 👏👏👏
Great man, love his cap. He looks better now than back when! Smiles
I've seen this genius live at the Roskilde Festival
THANK YOU for all the incredible music you gave my life that means SO much to me!!!!! Keith Moon was off the charts! Gone WAY too soon!
Loved Roger's role on Highlander! He was brillant!
These who is so a great part of my life. Pete so intelligent. Like paul beatles. And all of you. My generation.
Don’t care what anybody has said about Pete in the past at all. He is a genuine and good hearted man. He made his bad mistakes and wasn’t found guilty. He paid his dues in life and is a changed man. He has a good heart
Yeah but don`t worry he was innocent. The guy is good, the Who are brilliant
Roger is such a good guy so important to the Who ❤❤❤ Thank Goodness he gave up the guitar and started singing
Zane is a great interviewer, on the ball and engaging.
You can really see the political differences between Roger and Pete, and even the difference in their musical perceptions, yet they have been able to form such a deep relationship. Incredible.
The Who have done more repackaging and compilations than any band in history. Still LOVE them.
Will we have music or bands like these legends ever again?
The interviewer has a bit of intelligence but just as Townshend is about to make a brilliant point or reveal something we have not heard before, this guy interrupts him. Arrrrrrrrgh! Pete was saying that when young he looked at his band in a "punk" way and he was going to elaborate. Alas, we will never know. A lot of interviewers make this mistake.
To me, the fact that Pete and Roger still don't have a deep relationship even after knowing each other for almost 60 years is one of the funniest things ever
They are brothers to each other they may be different but care about each other very very much more than siblings it's a marriage
Absolute legends!
Such a genius and so wonderful and informative in this interview!
Great band, even greater human being's. They are The Who!! Let love reign o'er me and everybody else. Including Tommy!!
Rog has some pretty big ones to tell Mr. Apple Music that he didn't really get behind the re-issues!
“Entwistle is a supermodel!! What are you talking about?!?” 😂😂😂 I agree, 💯%!!
@Steve Mason Oh Steve, I agree completely. I find John totally hot, regardless of era! ❤️❤️❤️
This is great ! 😊
Look good Pete! That's great to see. The Who sell out is an early influence on punk. Thank you.
Beautiful just beautiful. 👏👏👏👏👏
'Summertime Blues' on the 'ODDS 'n' SODS' re-issue is studio recorded, and incomparable, even next to their own live versions. especially for '67.why it wasn't released on the initial LP, is a mystery. put it on and turn it up!
Ain’t no cure
@@davidmaynard1530 once in a while I blast out Blue Cheer's version.
On that same album I like Young Man Blues, with Pete's irrepressible guitar as Roger sings.
Excellent interviewer, excellent interviewees.
Well Done Roger Daltrey.
That was a brilliant interview 👏 .
ask Pete some good questions, then he takes off...
I think Pete will really like his new Arielle guitar. They are very nice!
Amo esse disco do ano que nasci, 1967! wow...a maior banda de rock na face da terra: the Who!👏
The Who have always been a part of my life and always will be until the end of the beginning... Sorry I had to throw a Beatles lyrics in the end there lol Love them both.
Keith Moon, the Mod, living a life of higher duty or purpose? As a musician, yes. Beyond that? He was the original wild man with no limits. Many broken hotel rooms back then can attest to that.
The who. Nunca. Seran. Un grupo mas.. Son la EXCELENCIA de un grupo.musical....townshend daltrey......iconos..
I'm a billion ages past you
A million years behind you too
A thousand miles up in the air
A trillion times I've seen you there
Your hair is golden
mine is gray
You walk on grass it turns to hay
Your blood is blue and your eyes are red
My body strains but but my nerve is dead
"Iain Entwistle"
Good to see he done his research...
won't get fooled again
Zane Lowe made this a great interview, especially Townshend. Always interesting, if not a bit narcissistic. Daltrey still has that streak of the street fighter going on. Excellent point about all four being so different. Entwhistle once called Daltrey “an ego with legs”. And, don’t forget ....... Radio London reminds you : Go to the church of your choice.
our love was...
Beautiful Pete 💜💜💜...
wow Roger has had so much work done.
I would imagine it's probably the effects of the vaccine.
It definitely has changed him.
Wow, that interviewer really rose to the occasion. Nice job....guy whose dad started a pirate radio station in New Zealand.
The Radio London spots...
Wonder if Pete still has the demos for Who Sell Out...
GO YOU 'R's!!!
Yes, he said as much at the beginning of the interview .
