- Some small business owners in California are posting videos of thieves on social media to fight back against the surge in shoplifting. Some store owners have gone as far as doxing some suspects, or posting their names, personal information and more online.

Why blur their faces? That defeats the purpose of the shaming
I hate the way the world is. The faces were censored likely because of NBC News' fears of lawsuits from the thieves, which is absolutely insane. I hate it. I also get it. But I still hate it. This is our reality.
💯🎯
because the news is smarter than they are. its one thing for the store to show them, its another thing for a huge news agency to do it. imagine you go into a store, steal nothing, then end up online, then the news reports on it and now millions of people think you stole, when you in fact, did not. then you would be entitled to sue both of them, but because the news reaches far more people, you could sue the news for 100-1000x what you could sue the store for. and that is why the news blurs their faces. they dont wanna get sued.
@@wesleyp3024 said " imagine you go into a store, steal nothing, then end up online, then the news reports on it and now millions of people think you stole, when you in fact, did not. "
If you watch the vid, you will see these people putting items in their pocket / coat / bag.
@@wesleyp3024True but the video clearly shows them stealing.
Don't want your face posted, then don't steal.
Can't say I blame these shop owners if police do little to nothing to help
They are fed up.
They do nothing because of our policies. Vote different
Couldn’t agree more.
There is "Wall of Shame" at most liquor stores.
At the corner store by the lite rail station in outside of Seattle I use, there is a little convience store owned by a older korean couple. Amazing nice people, but they have a printer that prints pictures bigger then normal paper and hang picture of shoplifters up. Ever time I go in there its like looking at the busted papers they have back east :D.
They should make website
The store owner should also post their pictures in the doors. There are two stores here in Chicago that posts their pictures and the word "banned".
Lol. I am I’m Chicago too and the grocery store I go to does that !
I see it all the time here in Chicago. It's definitely effective.
All store owners need to do this.
It isn't fair that law abiding citizens are not protected by the law meanwhile shoplifters are
You look like that chick from 90 Day Fiance.
Unfortunately, that seems to be completely intentional from our "elected representatives."
Yea many brazen bums steal from my job with no fear or care so sad. to those not from the US know how to act and can imagine why those here don't.

Anything to blame victim and protect criminals
True😞
why are they being called "alleged" when you are seeing them clearly on their cameras doing the shoplifting the merchandise ???
They have too until maybe after they're found guilty in court. The person being accussed could sue
Seeing in a video is not proving. Until they are convicted in a court. What if the video was manipulated?
because the perpetrators are white
When you're shopping, you put the things in the shopping bag that you take to the counter to pay for them. That's how shopping works. If you're buying more than a couple of things, you can't carry them all in your hands. You have to put them in the shopping bag... unless the stores don't want you to buy more than a couple of things. Who knows, maybe the stores want to sell less, since they don't want to let shoppers have something to carry the stuff around until they go to the checkout.
Because it's the law to use "alleged," unless/until they are found guilty in court
Misuse of the word alleged is getting so annoying. Alleged means no proof. We are watching the video proof of them red handed. Stop protecting criminals! And no bee-s about legality.
Yeah allegedly you don't like the word 😏
Alleged means not convicted.
@@sophocles1198 no, alleged means no proof. Countries like Australia have no issue calling killers killers. We still call people suspects even when they’ve clearly committed a crime.
This ought to be done by all companies. Companies should continue publicizing these crimes online because the criminals involved are despicable.
Even $1 shoplifting is a crime in Japan and can get arrested! And it is safe in Japan.
Japan with a 99% conviction rate.... Let's go
And is a crime in any other country in the world!
What's up with American laws protecting squatters and shoplifters? You'll never see that here in Singapore. US laws are so messed up😬
Does anyone else wonder if these shoplifters would also lift stuff from their friends homes they might visit….?
I'm sure they would. I had a "friend", not a close friend though, steal cigarettes from my mom when she spent the night at our place once. She also stole from stores. I didn't respect her after that.
@@L.Spencer I’ve had people lift stuff inside my home, too. They are not in my life now. Know them for what they do……
@@katem.8816 For sure, this was decades ago, but I remember the disappointment.
Let me ask you this, do you think that a thief would be ashamed to steal from someone if they are called his "friends"?
@@L.Spencer same here. I had spent time on the otherwise friendly relationship. It’s a lost connection.
I thought Id see the puzzle solvers saying "oh the usual suspects"...
Me too 👀👀👀
What did the small business do? As long as they don't falsely accuse anyone.
Relax Karen , they didn’t say anything wrong
I've been in an adult store that put pictures of shoplifters and the "toys" they were trying to steal around the store to try to embaris them. This was decades ago, so there was no social media. I doubt anyone who knew the people ever saw the pictures, but future shoppers probably didn't want to risk having their pictures featured in the store.
One business in my town posts photos of shoplifters in the store along with a notice offering other shoppers store credit if they identify them! Almost looks like an old-fashioned “Wanted” poster lol.
Cameras don’t lie.
Alleged ?
You're showing us video of people swiping stuff.
Want to help ?
Put their names in the clips.
well the problem with that is they havnt been convicted, and until they are, all those people listed are entitled to sue. and if they provided those details, the news would get sued too.
@@wesleyp3024
Exactly.
Our laws don't seem to help much, do they?
@@shoelessb4515 wait a minute. It’s a good thing one is considered innocent until proven guilty. It’s a real plus compared to other nations. It’s just that our system is slow and can be stayed too long.
@@katem.8816
Isn't the video proof ?
Why would a trial be necessary ?
@shoelessb4515 - Do you want a video of a person with your face (or closer looking) shop stealing? It is possible to create one. And if that happens would you just accept being in prison because there’s a video out there or would you want an opportunity to go to a court and prove you didn’t actually steal?
"alleged" as we are watching them put things in their coats. And yes, your doing the right thing, holding people accountable since the law won't.
The criminals will find a way to sue the store owners
No the Law states one has no the expectation of privacy in public. Come correct Google it before you make blanket statements
@@deborahedwards160a business is not public property, but private. The owners do have the right to record those who go on their property though...
Good idea because someone local would definitely be able to help them out. I’m in support of small businesses.
The thing with defamation though is that the people suing for it have to show their life actually was impacted by the amount that they're suing for, which for someone non-famous, non-rich, is quite literally impossible to get "rich" from.
Maybe not 'rich', but if they can show that friends and co-workers treat them differently, they'll probably have a case. 🫤
Unlike the poor #Shopkeeper who will probably be met with #HateCrime. ☹️
Loss of income is a huge one. If they can make a case for being fired and not being hireable. And they can demonstrate their career trajectory, then the court would have to decide what someone in their position could potentially have earned and compensate. I imagine it’s similar to the damages paid out to able bodied people who end up becoming disabled and unable to work. When they’re suing for loss of income, that’s what the jury has to decide. How much their life is worth based on the industry they were in before they became disabled. But aside from real damages I wonder if emotional distress is a valid claim for defamation lawsuits. If it is allowed, then I think that’s where some of the money would come from. Either way, it’s not chump change. Maybe not get rich quick. But honestly, even a few hundred thousand dollars is a nice amount, especially if they end up investing it wisely.
@@SL-lz9jr"invest wisely" ha ha ha ha
You don't have to prove damages when defamation includes accusation of criminal wrongdoing. Damages are presumed.
Thieves and their enablers, don’t play the victim game please
You can shame criminals in San Francisco. They know they can do anything they want and get away with it.
USUAL SUSPECTS...😒

Any comments on diversity?? No?
Just you idiots, not like adding more people to the problem helps anything...
Social media is where everyone gets their clout. Why not shame them on there too? Most people wouldn't commit a crime if they knew they would get caught or ridiculed by others.
What? Don’t I get some “usual suspects”?
No, because these AREN’T to usual suspects…these are cherry picked videos specifically to avoid addressing the reality of the situation…
Right? Oh wait, these individuals aren't the "usual suspects" are they?

@HostileTakeover555 the reality is that she's being targeted for theft. She's shown multiple videos of it. How was any of that cherry picked?
Then don't be a thief.
Businesses SHOULD PUBLICLY SHAME shoplifters!
They have no shame.
What? No racial comments this time? I wonder why...
Because none of them were black, you know they look for any excuse to be raycist.
Exactly. Well dressed and stealing. These shop owners would watch Black folk upon entry while these regular thieves go unpunished. Boohoo 😢
It's interesting to see who's actually doing the stealing: EVERYBODY!
I’ll say it. These are the same people that watch the BP like hawks when they’re in the store. The WP as we can see are padding their pockets. For that, I don’t care about their theft issues. It’s probably some sort of karma.
@mogulmade,
yep, they would follow black people, its funny because it's yt who steals the most, the level of entitlement
I don’t understand why they blurred their faces 😂 Shame on you thieves.
GOOD! I have hated thieves since I was a child. The blurred faces just prove that criminals will always be protected 🤬
we need a citizen-managed record of peoples' shoplifting so even if the state doesn't recognize them as criminals this behavior should still affect their future job prospects
Bottom line is you if don’t have the money- stop stealing. The small shop are already hurting- can we just please STOP hurting each other.
Good for those shop owners, it’s about time they started fighting back. Keep fighting back any way you can.
It seems like criminals have more right and being protected by law , that’s so messed up 😡
Say what?!!! I didn't have to pay for my shampoo at the store? I could have just stolen it and not worry about it because it is less than $950. Where's my receipt?
Yes. You can even take the conditioner and special hair treatments too. No more honor system or integrity. Plenty of free moral societal decay.
Wow that one girl literally is wearing a Gucci bag and is stealing 🤦♀️
She probably stole that too! She is a thief!
Omg 😂 you Are right! I didn’t even think of that!
One of my favorite Antique shops places zoomed-in, enlarged photos of shoplifters at their cash-register! Shame can be extremely effective.
ATP I'd research on theft deterrent devices like door scanners and research on some methods to curb shoplifting
It’s about time
The intent matters. If they pay later, that is just a kind gesture... after the fact. Continue sharing.
Two rules to follow when opening a business. 1. Never in California. 2. Never in areas where a large number of them reside in
you be suprise that every country. Even yours, have weird laws.
Why are criminals still being treated like victims? Our criminal justice systems is broken.
As they should. We don't need to protect thieves.
you know, there is a lot of talk about making punishments worse, but what about enforcement? police need to do more, prosecutors need to stop giving people slaps on the wrist. what about addressing why people are stealing? enforce the laws that exist. stop reducing sentences, pass mandatory minimum sentences for shop lifting. pass laws that make the AG forced to prosecute. people for what they are charged with and stop letting the prosecutors choose what to, and not to prosecute people for.
We are all TIRED. LONG OVERDUE
Yes everyone should be shaming them.
if you steal or shoplift once and returned items people still need to be aware of their names and show their faces so that they will learn and others too
Good 👍 theres a fashion store by my house and they had 25 pictures of all girls stealing. And all liquor stores in my area has that also
Why are they blurring their faces?
The law is always protecting thugs & shoplifter.
You have to come forward to identify yourself if you want to sue for defamation! Good luck with that. BUSTED!
Just gotta get the Gas Station Encounters voiceovers and everyone will be on board with shaming the shoplifters. 💯
Good for you!! Protect your business!! Shoplifting has almost become decriminalized. So whatever you have to do. If I come to SF I will def visit your store!
Gas station encounters is one of my favorite youtube channels!
I remember once i was at the grocery store and didn’t have a cart or basket. I was distracted and forgot i was holding a bag with a tomato. When we paid and walked to the car, i noticed the tomato in my hand and realized i didn’t pay for it. I walked back in and got back in line at the register. So yes, sometimes people make honest mistakes and i would have hated to be shamed and labeled for an innocent mistake. At the same time, if you are blatantly and purposely doing it, perhaps the risk of public shaming may talk you out of doing it. I remember back in the day, a large, local grocery store had a the entrance, for public view, a poster board with polaroids of all people caught shoplifting and their names. I frequently scanned it to see if i saw a familiar face. Good deterrent for sure!
Funny how some peoples faces get blurred and others dont. Im confused as a news wastcher
In the Philippines, majority of malls, stores, banks, etc. have security guards.
Showing edited blurred videos should be illegal.
Good Idea. Should also show a loop on a monitor in the store window.
Eventually you will have to check in with ID to shop places.
The nerve of that spokesperson talking rubbish about defamation. No defamation when camera displays the facts that they have stolen. More so when both the law and politicians are disinterested in helping small businesses out.
To steal from one's shop and whether to shame or not? Of course one should shame the shoplifter! It's like a parent scolding a child.
Perfect. The justice system won't hold them accountable, so why shouldn't small businesses? Just because they were forced to pay for or return the items, doesn't mean they didn't steal in the first place. It's disgusting that they raised the amount that people can steal. That's punishing the business owners, not the thieves. Despicable.
The comments section is looking pretty light today 🤔 I guess nonblack people get a pass.
Yep, they're always quiet when it's non-black ppl. Booking marking this video for future purposes 😂
@@meivalentine6545 it’s funny because their people actually steal the most. They specialize in stealing millions of dollars in wire fraud and embezzlement.

Doesn’t fiit their hatred agenda.
This! 💯
What is ALLEGED about these shoplifters? They were CAUGHT ON CAMERA!
Good. They should because retail theft affects us all. It’s beyond tacky!!!!
Price of everything has gone up... So why not raise the amount that criminals can steal. smh
society is too broken to care
What does lawyer do these days
And what I have been saying, the putting them on social media isn't enough, bringing back public shaming as la kitson, is posting shoplifters pics ( extra large pic) of shoplifters mug in window as brazen shoplifters tries to return merchandise
I hate to say this but Californians may need to go to a more traditionally conservative position when it comes to this retail theft. It doesn’t mean you’d agree with everything but we need to stop making everything a political fight and try to focus on what will work. I don’t think any citizen really wants to see once great american cities being destroyed or a small business owner not being protected in California or in Texas. It’s time to pull together a bit more.
Why do you hate to say something that should be common sense?
Gas Station Encounters, go over there and take a gander.
Just to identify, at 2:19, that's Summer Stephan, San Diego County District Attorney.
This approach could be complicated legally. Creative thinking for sure. But could open lawsuits.
THESE THIEVES ARE SHAMELESS SO THIS WON'T WORK!!
I've known allot of women shoplifters in my lifetime , more brazen and younger then males , they usually get away with it based on labeling , "a nice lady wouldn't shoplift "
I had a small brick and mortar store for a while and caught 2 girls I personally went to school with and have known since 1st grade. Yes, 1st grade. I caught them both stealing from me.
I shut that store down. I now sell online for my living. It is sad, but I believe more and more will close physical locations due to theft.
That’s why racial profiling is so insidious and wrong. Lots of shoplifters. Come in all shapes and sizes, genders and races.
@@SL-lz9jrYet 13% of the population is overrepresented in crime statistics... Quit beating around the bush...
If the police wont do anything ... then allow the store management to shame these shoplifters. Since they are brave enough to steal ... they should be brave enough to been seen and shamed. Case in point, I know of a gift shop who has a "Hall of shame" posted on the wall of their store. It's a type of store where all ages go in to shop. One day a group of kids came in and one of the kids looked at the photos and recognized their teacher. The kids told their parents and the parents told the school. Months later the store received an apology from the shoplifter and returned the stolen items. Fortunately/unfortunately she got fired from her job.
Don’t blur it 🤦🏽♂️
The law and lawyers need to understand it's not alleged when you have video evidence..shame them..shame them on every platform
We have been doing this for 8 years now. Why weren't we invited to this story.
Also, not that they downgraded what a violent crime is. So, when you see that graph pushed as progress, it is also a lie.
Sorry, when criminals get away witj doing wrong and we tired of this action has to be taken
I can't stand thieves
law doesnt work.... fines dont work but SHAME is the BEST TOOL.... like that judge is in I forgot what state who makes u walk around the town center with a sign around ur neck
How is it shop owners get prosecuted but not the thief
Watch more and more business owners flock outside California because the state keeps protecting the people that break the law
NBC again blaming the victims here
Well..well..well...
Are gift items essential enough for people to steal?..
Good idea.
SF will never be back to normal if theft laws don't work.... My city has become a joke and its so frustrating.... shoplifters in JAIL and stores should be granted to right to protect there property... this is insane
All the shops should tag their items prices to $1,000 each and then offers discounts at the till / cashier to it's original price ?
That way if someone caught stealing it would be based on the item value ?
Hey, if you catch them all bets are off! Get them! Print the pictures and put them in the window. Lock the door and allow patrons in few at a time. Set appointments with your regular customers. And I love that the community has shown up, I hope they shop too! *Organize and vote out the clowns!!!*
If you want shoplifting to stop, then you should make it a mandatory 5 year prison sentence for 1st offense shop lifting.
This is wrong
I know thats right
