PATRAM: Uniting Musical Excellence with Orthodox Worship

- In an effort to better train church musicians, representatives from most major musical programs and seminaries in ROCOR and the OCA gathered together at the end of 2013 to form the Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute (PaTRAM). The work of the newly formed institute was blessed by the Primates of the Orthodox Church in America and the Russian Church Abroad. Building on the work that has been done by music educators in the past, PaTRAM strives to provide continuity through its progressive training programs at every level of Church musical development in both English and Slavonic.
PaTRAM has also partnered with the Media Office of the Eastern American Diocese of ROCOR to produce a documentary about the work and goals of the institute. The 25-minute film, entitled "Uniting Musical Excellence with Orthodox Worship," gives an overview of the important role of music in the life of the Orthodox Church and explains how PaTRAM is embarking on an endeavor that could potentially revolutionize the way that the Orthodox conductors and singers receive their musical training in North America.

Glory to God for the development of this new project. I would submit, however, that the influence of Carpathian traditions exists in American Orthodox worship as well. No transformation of the Russian style of church singing in America would be complete without the inclusion of the Carpatsko-Rus traditions as well.

As a professional Orthodox musician and singer, I am honestly surprised to see so much emphasis on conducting styles.I have sung in many choirs that had no conductor during performances. As a conductor myself, I always try to get my singers to understand the importance of isolating sensations in the head to properly place their voices while understanding what the music is intended to do emotionally. The mood of a song is never a mystery. Of course, great care must be taken to blend always with other voices and to sing on pitch. (Once, when I auditioned for a professional choir, I refused an accompanist in order to prove I could sing an entire song in a high register without going flat; I succeeded and greatly impressed the conductor.) One must also spend much time listening to other individuals and choirs to discern both good and bad habits.
Aren't orthodox discouraged to let oneself be lulled by the traps of sensations and imaginations?
i am one latin rite who differers with my fellow latin rite brothers and sisters! There is no more beautiful music than what I hear in the orthodox church. It has lead me to become an iconographer using the technique of russian medievael style. Where can one purchase truly quality sound cd's of what I am hearing! Fr. Gregory Michael

Roman as in The Great Emperor Constantine. Twelve official liturgies. No Shame. No pain. Only Apostolic unity in Lord Christ, Jesus Who is God. All Liturgies One Faith. Seven Ecumenical Councils, One God. This video defends Roman aggression and intolerance to methodology, not deviation but bulling to the right, an historical and cultural preservation of Our Family and The True Faith, That belongs to Us All.
I totally agree! If you listen to the old Latin Rite Chants they show their roots!
The church breaths out of two lungs! It saddens me that most prefer one lung!
donadieu83 The Church does not have lungs because it is not divided. The Holy Fathers and saints who preserved the Faith never spoke in those terms but instead echoed St. Paul by saying that the Church has one spirit, one heart and one mind. That mind is the "mind of Christ", that spirit is the Holy Spirit and that Heart is God Himself, who is one. Let us not drag God into our divisions. There is one O(o)rthodox Faith and one O(o)rthodox Church guided by the Holy Spirit of the one true God. This, of course, need not preclude mercy and charity. As St. Peter tells us, we should always be able to give a reason for our hope but we must do it with gentleness and respect.

While I love what Patram is doing, I wish there was a similar organization that would focus on PAN-Orthodox music. In this day where there has been more progress than ever of unity between the jurisdictions in the U.S., music should be one of the most important areas where this can be realized. Russian music is beautiful. So is Byzantine music. We, as directors and singers really should be efficient in both. We should also continually be developing a specific American music for the Church, that is still within all the requirements of our Holy Church.
We are pan-Orthodox. Since 2018 there is no other really Orthodox Church, all the other ones fell into heresy

Nana Nanush I believe it is called, "Now the Powers of Heaven". Incredible song. My favorite rendition is done by the Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir. It's on UA-cam. The video is called, "This chanting by them is brilliant". Also, if you haven't heard the, "Russian Orthodox angelic song", I recommend it.
