An absolute gem! I was 12, almost 13 years old when this rallye took place. Montecarlo was spectacular with all that snow. Nowadays it's almost always dry and sunny - courtesy of climate change.
I had miniature cars of Audi, Renault and Porsche, but my favourite was the Lancia 037 Rally with the Martini Racing colours. Did anyone know the scale models from Vitesse? 😍

I have a scale model of the greatest rally car ever, IMO. The mighty Lancia Stratos, my fav car of all time. I do really like all of the Lancia rally cars.

My favourite driver was Markku Alen, what a character! Insanely fast, and I loved the way he used to mangle the English language, while being perfectly understandable! I always think of him when trying to speak a foreign language...

@ 0:24, does anyone please know what those ATV/kart-like things were called and if they were racing them as well? Pretty much a kart without suspension, but more for offroad since they have big tires and a locked rear axle.

these vehicles are called off road karts. It seemed that the drivers shown at 0:24 were having fun driving these karts. It would have been interesting to put a rally car engine into one of those off road karts...

Yes W.Rohrl won because it suited Audi better.
Sad when it's not on equal terms. And you who believe that he won honestly may well consider why Stig switched to Ford.
And why Stig was so much faster than Rohrl when they had similar cars at the master's meeting some years later.
He was faster than Rohrl in all cars.

Sorry, but I think you don't know the real story behind Röhrls victory. After the 3 first stages he was already more than 2 minutes behind Blomquist and he was sure that he won't win. But a friend told him, Röhrl has to leave the service point at first, that the team changed the tires at Blomquist and Mikkola's car. So at the first service point he went to Roland Gumbert and told him, if we won't get the same tires like the other, he will stop the car at a stage and pushing it over the cliff. From that stage all 3 went out with equal tires and Röhrl was faster than Blomquist. The Audi team was still pissed of about Röhrl's victory's a year before with Lancia. Yes, Röhrl lost against Blomquist at the Race of champions, but I wouldn't put too much weight in. It was 3min race. At a long term Rallye Röhrl was faster than Mikkola or Blomquist. I think he hadn't more talent than the Skandinaviens, but he lived for his sport. He and his co driver Christian Geistdörfer were perfections. He was the first rally driver who actually made a lot of sport for his condition. He was always top fit and at 09:30pm was bed time. No drinks at the bar. Geistdörfer invented the pace notes with al the graduations for corners like corner 3 ++/- -. So a corner could have 5 different states. This system is still in use to this day. When Röhrl changed to Audi it was clear from day one that Blomquist should run for the WRC title and he will be development driver for the short wheel base quattro. He said so long Blomquist is in the Rally, he will stay behind him accept from Monte Carlo.

@@helgelippert1970 Good story you try to make, but so wrong.
Audi hires no one who they are angry with.
They understood that if Röhrl winning them sell more cars than if Mikkola or Blomqvist did.
Tires on the cars was the same.
It was not as you try to make it look.
Them reduced the power on two cars and when Röhrl took the lead the team order come to stop fight. Röhrl was told to act very surprised, but Stig and Mikkola also know whats happening behind the doors. ...and Stig dident feel good about it.
It was bad for Audi that Stig dident stay.
On some legs he managed to be faster than Röhrl anyway and it impressed many .... In addition, his driving was constantly nicer to the tires, which later turned out to be a big problem when he was no longer there.
If you check the master meeting, you will see what a difference in driving it is.
Stig is very calm and precise, as always.
Röhrl is everywhere, and really tried ... It is money that controls, and some can only accept.

@@jankarlsson5358 Why I should make up any story? If Walter Röhrl would know anything about low boost in team mate cars, he would never satisfied about his victory and he would mentioned it in his several interviews. He never, ever shut his mouth, about things he wouldn't like. I think you don't know his character and I wish you would understand German. Here on YT are lots of German Interviews with him and he is going really into detail what happened in his carreer. And if you would look at the stage times you can see that something must have changed and it wasn't low boost at team mate cars. Look at '85 Monte Carlo. Both had the same cars and Röhrl was minutes before Blomquist. And again about the master event. It was the first time Röhrl drove the 205. Blomquist drove this car before under racing conditions. A bit unfair, or? And I can tell you about Röhrls driving style that he understand it very well to safe tyres and the mechanic of the car, because his style was very unspectacular. Compare the driving style of both. Here a lot of vids on YT from both in the same car at the same rally and you will see the difference. And again Blomquist should win the title in '84. He was set from day 1 and everybody knew this. And Röhrl started to develop the short wheel base quattro in' 84. And at the Monte Carlo '84 there were no plans for Blomquist to change to Ford. That came later. When the S1 E2 debuted Röhrl was by far the fasted of the Audi drivers. Look at stage times Monte Carlo' 86. He was faster than Toivonen, but he had two tyre punctures and the Audi mechanics put a wrong spare tyre in his car. Overall that cost him more than 10min.

@@helgelippert1970 Have you ever heard any designated first driver admit that they got any benefits? It was very valuable for Audi and its car sales.
And again about the master event. The only thing that was really fair there was when they both sat in Audi .... And there I was surprised how bad Röhrl actually drives his car compere to Stig, it's not one big mistake, he constantly loses time to Stig. (Maybe he got a bad car? ;) I have not read anything about this 85 Monte Carlo event in swedish magazins. ..it was in a British, when Stig begin to test the new Ford RS, than it stand as if them told the "real"story and that Stig very easily moved to Ford because of that.
And it was not Stig's words, he only told it was because Ford was a new car, build with an mid engine to be fast, not a normal that you need to rebuild and never get as fast.(Like the Audi)
I dident care about who the drivers was in any cars....The cars was the only thing I looking at.
87 would have been a nice year for groupe B if not Toivonen have died. ...
On asphalt, Röhrl was faster, but 85 had more snow than 84 when Lancia succeeded in cheating to victory by salty roads to reduce the advantage of four-wheel drive. They also got shortened and removed sections, where Audi would have had great advantage.
      Too much money in it.
So it was probably not fair when they both drove for Audi.
Stig was very popular for his exact driving, Röhrl has always driven wide and Stig always stingy.
It is related to previous cars.
Stig with front wheel drive got a softer and more precise style.
Röhrl continued with wide rear, from rear wheel drive.
Sorry If it seems as if I hold on Stig
I was 17 in 1985 and read all about these cars and competitions then. (83-86)
Anyone who drove these cars was probably a little crazy and Röhrl was no friend of high jumps, so I don't know if he was driving all the rallies? And then it can be harder to become a world champion as Audi wanted him to be in 85, I remember that I have read about that Audi not was so happy about that Röhrl dident wanted to drive some of the rallies because of jumps.

    • @helgelippert1970
      @helgelippert1970 5 років тому +5

@@jankarlsson5358When Group B died I was 13. So I can't remember at any details. But I have lots of books of this ehra at home. A few of them are from Walter Röhrl himself and his career. So there are a lot of information in. I met him twice and I got always an autogram. He is still to this day a very popular person in Germany and really down to earth. The great Niki Lauda named him ones "The Ayrton Senna of rallying". He gives still a lot of interviews and you can meet him at several classic events due a year. And he is still an employee of Porsche who tests produktion cars in the development phase, often on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. He is with over 70 years still incredible fast. But I met Stig Blomquist ones as well and got an autogram on my shirt :)
I got all my information about Group B out of books or videos. When Röhrl came in '84 to Audi, he said in advance that he won't go to every Rallye and he will support Stig for the title. But in Monte Carlo he want to drive full speed. He never liked rallys in Afrika, like Kenya or Ivery Coast. He didn' t liked the RAC Rallye, because no practise wasn"t allowed, so he got in '85 a local Co driver with pace notes. It ended in a crash, because the co driver wasn' t able to read the pace notes right, because the S1E2 with PDK gearbox was too brutal for him. And you are right, he never went to Finnland for the 1000 lakes Rallye. I don't know why, but he mentioned it that he never went, because he don't wanted. But Mikkola told a funny story about this topic. The other Scandinavians asked him after Group B, why Walter never came. And he said "We all can be happy, that he never came".
You mentioned the Monte Carlo Rallyes but I think you got the year wrong. In 83' Röhrl won with Lancia the Monte, because they salted the icey roads at night. In '84 was a lot of more snow. In' 85 Vatanen won with the 205. Röhrl finished 2nd and Blomquist 4th. Both on the S1. But Röhrl never had a chance against Vatanen and the 205. The S1 was a bad car. Monte Carlo was Röhrl 's favorite Rallye and he won 4 times on for different cars. Fiat 1980, Opel' 82, Lancia '83 and Audi '84. In 86' he was faster than Toivonen, but two tyre punctures cost him 10min.
Audi had in '84 four very good driver and I don't think that anybody had an advantage or disadvantage. It would have makes no sense to me, because from day one Röhrl don't wanted to go for the title. It was part of his contract, that he won't go to every event. And in '84 Röhrl drove the S1 in several Rallyes, before the other driver jumped on. In 85' Stig got the 2nd place and Röhrl the 3rd place in the championship. Both drove 8 events, but Röhrl could finished just 4, because of the unrealible car. Stig finished in total six. The interesting fact is that every time both finished the same rally, Röhrl was ahead of Blomquist.
But it is totally ok for me that your heart as an Scandinavian is beating for Stig. So I'm going with Walter ;)
