So can someone please explain to me why Eliza would pass at 4.85? Actually, don't bother. This was one of the dumbest all time strategies we've ever seen in any sport.
In another comment, someone suggested that since Eliza and Molly train together, Eliza figured Molly would clear 4.85, and so McCartney decided to save her strength for the showdown at 4.90.
That is exactly what I thought, but then skip the 1st one too. Or only skip the 3rd.
But why did Molly not save her attempts, what would crossing 4:85 do for her?
Because even if she cleared it she would still be 2nd if Caudery cleared it. The only way to win in that scenario was to clear a higher height. So she opted to use more attempts at the higher height.
@@jerrycallo no she could also clear 4.85 and if Cauldery did not clear it, which she didn’t, she would win.
@@JoostMehrtens No, that's just one of the possibilities. It was pretty clear from Caudery 's latest performances that it was a good bet she would clear 4.85. So she made the best decision she could at the time Hindsight is 20-20 and she didn't have a time machine, . Maybe you missed the "IF Caudery cleared it. " in my comment and "in that scenario"

This was such an exciting competition, but in response to some of the comments, I feel it worth mentioning that since Eliza is Molly's training partner, she knows better than any competitor what Molly is capable of and it could be that, expecting her to clear 4.85, she chose to save her energy for the next round. She may have regretted her decision with hindsight, but the emergence of a new and young champion is good for any sport, and if come the summer, all these ladies are fit & well, the competition for gold in Paris is a very exciting prospect.
I feel bad for those women who are injured. I wish them a quick recovery.
My Greek athlete Stefanidi isn't the same like she used to be. She will retire as the 10 greatest female pole vaulter of all time. ❤ 🇬🇷

Eliza M is not only a beautiful athlete but also has a beautiful smile. Clearly a warm, simpatico, person. I look forward to seeing her again in international competition......especially the Olympics....

Great Pole-vaulting and win by Cautury. Moser of Switzerland seemed to be Vaulting with a Fibreglass Pole to flexible and about to break,and definitely cost her a Medal 🙂👍
Molly is my favorite vaulter, so I was glad to see her win, and Katie grew up a suburb away from my childhood home, so her bronze medal also pleased me. Just subscribed to your channel.

Narration - Don't announce the results of each jump before we see it, especially on a third attempt. Just say "Jane Doe took it down to her this attempt at 4.7..." and let the audience feel the excitement as we watch the third attempt.

Thanks for posting, can't count on NBC for Women's Pole Vault. Frustrated with Eliza's decision. She was clearly the best on the day and she probably gave up the gold by passing 4.85 when there was no strategic reason for doing so.

@@stevemathews9535 Sometimes they do. Vault is not like 100m where the fastest time wins. I bet if you looked at the analytics of that competition, Eliza would be proven to have the highest height.
Not a valid way to view it at all. There is no point in clearing by too great a margin as it simply wastes energy. Managing your energy expenditure is something pole vaulters have to do, which is exactly why they will choose to skip heights and maybe not put their utmost into every vault. When it comes to actual competition, then that is all part of the decisions they have to make, and if the rules were different they the competitors' behaviours would alter.

Great spirit among these competitors.
Stefanidi and Morris had bad days. Sandi is one of only 4 women EVER to go 5.0 or above. She just wasn't letting the bow of the pole do its work and kept hitting the bar on the way up. I wish her well in Paris. And great job by Moon for bronze!
Watching Caudery run up on those vaults ... it's just sheer athletic power. Impressive. Then you get McCartney who is deceptively agile and seems to flow up and over.

@@tonymartinis2956 not at all on their own. The first thing I did was find the mute button. 😡 The worst part was that they gave away the result of the jump before the women were even in the air. It took away all of the suspense and excitement of the competition. This is why NBC Sports commentators are professionals.

I've never really watched pole vault before. The level of strength and body control is insane. I'm just imagining how easy it would be to get injured running at full speed and launching myself with a bendy pole like that. I'd surely end up launching backwards with plenty of broken bones. These athletes make it look like a breeze

Hi. Do you have some feedback for our commentators?
It depends if they are open to feedback.
Sure.
The commentator who worked on U20 championships in Israel in 2023, needs to learn the event of the pole vault. She makes comments that show her lack of knowledge of the event. But equally she should not be making as a commentator. For instance she doesn't have to say 'she executed that vault perfectly'. If you listen to for instance BBC commentators, they will say, She's over the bar, or cleared the height, but won't go into areas that an expert coach of the event is qualified for. Your commentator talks about height of the athlete, not necessarily being an advantage, things that she's sharing with the uninformed public. If she doesn't know the answer, she should not bring it up. Height is a massive advantage in the pole vault fyi. Speed and a powerful take off, however trump height. If someone has all 3, they're in an advantageous position. But being the most technical event in athletics, there are other factors involved. The other thing your commentator talks about is how the crowd is feeling, or what an athlete might be thinking. Really? Is she in a position to make those assumptions? She has enthusiasm and heart and saying 'we wish her well for the future ' is lovely, but please stick to what you know.
She says, "people make use of whatever physical traits they have. It's how they use it that matters. Being tall or short gives no undue advantage to any athlete in pole vault. "
If taller athletes have an undue advantage in pole vault, the results do not reflect that, at least in the womens pole vault.
Some people, not all say height is an advantage in pole vault. Like you say yourself, there are factors that rank higher.
None of the taller athletes finished in the top 3. Infact, the much shorter athletes, Miklyciute and Stucki finished 2 and 4 repectively.
You are right. The commentator does not know what the athlete is thinking. The commentator is GUESSING what the athlete might be thinking and presenting it to the viewers.
As a viewer, you are open to rejecting those conjectures.
However, the conjectures are not wild speculations. They are based on knowledge, observation, and her awareness of the competition.
If an athlete skips a height, the commentator cannot ignore it. She has to speculate citing possible reasons on why the athlete took the decision.

Why do they seem to specifically develop ankle injuries?
Most ankle and other injuries in pole vault occur due to not landing properly on the padding. As you saw in the video, Margot Chevrier broke her ankle when she landed awkwardly on the padding.
Ankle sprains/ strains are pretty common for most athletes.
The athletes who pulled out of the competition couldve continued, but did not want to risk a serious injury. They all want to be 100% for the Olympics.

Serious question..... Was there a specific reason some of the women did not wear their nations' "colors" for this competition? Yes, some did in a nice way, and some did in a discreet way but some didn't proudly wear their nations' colors.
Execpt for Caudery, all the athletes were wearing their flag colors. Caudery had a Great Britain flag on her outfit.

What about the US girls? Maybe I missed it. I thought they were wearing purple(ish) tops. We usually see Red,White and Blue in some sort. Yes, Caudery had a flag but I thought she had a similar color top as the American girls? The flag seemed small but was better than what some other girls had to represent their own countries. The French girl had her colors and a couple others did as well. Maybe I missed it but it sure seemed different. We could go back and look but I'm just answering without checking the video. Bruni is in blue, but Italians in all sports wear blue. Rest of the athletes are wearing their flag colors.

I guess, to me, the USA tops don't look red, they look mauve, not red at all. The Czech Republic had red, France had red, even Russia had some red, the USA tops did not look red.
Also, New Zealand's McCartney wore black, that is not the correct colors. I think I saw the USA tops not being red and then noticed England and New Zealand and it just didn't seem right.
Of course France was red, white and blue but it's funny to see Russia and Czech Republic in definite red, white and blue colors and then see the USA in mauve and blue.
It may be a generational thing. I'm used to the US wearing a brighter red, not mauve and no white, other than the letters USA. It isn't a very patriotic look to the American uniforms, unfortunately.
@@notsosilentmajority1 New Zealand athletes wear black in all sports - Rugby, Football, Cricket. etc. Their Rugby team is called "All Blacks", their cricket team is called "Black Caps", and so on. The same way Australians wear Yellow and the Dutch wear Orange, despite no occurrence of those colors in their flags.
But those colors mean something in their culture.

There was no Russia. Russia is banned from all world athletics events. Russia won't be at the Olympics either.

15 feet...that won't win a boys high school meet. Lets hope it stays a ladies event only. This was a good meet though. Kennedy did a 4.9 last year. Let's hope all these ladies get healthy for the outdoor season coming up.
On the contrary. 12-15 feet is normal in boys high school pole vault. Anything above that and you’re usually considered the best in the state. Plus, there’s a reason men are better at PV… they’re born with more upper body strength. That’s not something that you can fault the women for and demean them for jumping at a lower height.
@@vickiego1 I was a track star. My buddy had to go 16 to win the conference. Not sure when you ran track or where. On a normal basis he had to do that to win a meet. He vaulted that in the regionals and didn't go any further. Same for long jump. The women's world champion does about 21ft. I jumped 14.5 in fourth grade track. Usually you had to go about 24 to win a meet. The times just don't compare. I was really fast. I ran 9.6 in the hundred twice and 9.8 three times. Most of the time 10 to 10.1 almost every meet. During track my 40 was 4.2. My indoor 60 right after wrestling and only doing 10 miles a day was 5.6. It would take the best female sprinter in the world to match those times if she could and I wasn't even the fastest guy in the state. In the 60 I got passed by 4 guys running 5.2. My coach was stoked because as slow as I was from wrestling, with no sprint work I could still come in 5th at a 150 team indoor meet. It's clearly unfair if a biological male competes against women, no matter what changes have been made to him. There was a really fast Swedish girl that was an exchange student and here hundred was 12. Something.
I like women's track, swimming, tennis, volleyball and gymnastics. There's a tape with three or four gold medalist women watching college men do their disciplines in gymnastics. They sit there in shock at how much better men do it. In some cases saying, "that's impossible, I can't do that. " Of course I'd rather see women doing it.

It seems tome when watching New Zealand actually won. She basically cleared 4.9m even though she tapped the bar unfortunately, so why not just win at 4.85m? I guess she was just giving the gold away. It seemed to me she had a bit better athleticism even if it's by the smallest amounts, at the top level I guess that is actually significant at amount of just half a meter.
Why do they force women to be scantilly clad? Is it for air resistance purposes? The beach volley ball competitors (women) need to be streamlined so they can hit the ball better? The women runners in track should be naked or at least bikini's to reduce wind resistance? Men need clothes depending on how well-endowed they are?

where was sidorova, how is it possible for someone to make it to a championship and not clear 4.5, McCartney has been the most improved in my opinion over the last couple years, she made this competitive, everyone falls below the russian sidorova, the number of times they fail to pass 4.7 is astonishing, good to see some improvement in some of the athletes, but this sport needs someone to step up in their training program and elevate these women to new heights.

You don't say the last numeral when it's a zero. It, "eight point four? (8.4) If it were 8.45, then you say the last number. either "eight point four five or "eight four five." ".45"
