These New York origin testimonies are interesting, especially the civil war pension application, but if one person says it once, others will repeat it multiple times - heresay. I have little faith in those selling newspapers, then and now! 😂
New York it is, no doubt. I don't even question that. Although a surfaced birth certificate would be nice. I'll make one, and we can seal the deal. Lol cheers!
Sometimes 2+2=4. And this is one of those times. I’d be shocked if anything other than New York is definitively proven down the road. Even though I kinda want him to be a Hoosier like myself
@@chasingbilly the real question is, do we ever prove it 100 percent? I dabbled in my own ancestry for a short time. While it was awesome and I did make a few discoveries, it really tested my patience. It’s just a lot of work.
While I know there is a source or two that say he was born in Indiana, I think that's one or two versus the many that say New York. My bet is that these are not reliable enough for serious consideration. We'd have to account for other details from the same sources to check for accuracy. Given all the references from those who knew the Kid in New Mexico point to New York, it seems logical to believe this is what Billy told them. It makes no sense that so many would state that unless they heard it straight from the Kid, nor any reason he would have to claim that falsely. Joseph McCarty is consistent in his census records as being born in New York, and then we have William Antrim's statement about Catherine's first husband. I know of no reason for doubt about their statements. Yes, it would be nice to find a birth record, but such may never have been made, or never found if even if it was. The preponderance of the evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of a New York birth. Very little is there to contradict that. Unless, of course, he was born in Buffalo, at The Gap store, in upstate New York where Catherine was shopping for designer maternity jeans. (Hey, I'm just tryin' to throw the Brushy guys a bone!)
Grabbed this quickly from the internet: Here are some statistics about immigration to New York City in the 19th century: 1840s: Irish men and women fleeing the potato famine of 1845-52 were the most visible immigrant group. 1860: New York had one-fourth of all immigrants in the United States, and one out of eight Americans was an immigrant.
Nicely done, although you forgot to mention that Joe McCarty-Antrim cited his own birthplace as New York in multiple census records.
Also an excellent source!!!

Add to that, Authentic Life and contemporary newspaper accounts. It's got to be NY.
I specifically didn't mention Garrett because I wanted to make a good case without the "You believe Garrett a lying coward" crowd haha
Figured that was what you were doing. Good take.
Great stuff, Kid. El fin do Mundo

Haha, deal!
Just saw the article about the 2 photos you posted a link to. Interested to know what you think James?
I don't see a reason to think it's Billy yet. Hope they research it more.
I'm thinking the New York story is legit, but there could be a twist.😂😂
Whats the twist?? Interested to hear!
@@chasingbilly I was hoping you would tell me. Lol
@navydogsadventures3500 hahahahaha
Billy was New York Irish 🍀🗽
That's my current theory, for sure.

I agree. My conclusion is new York. But it is possible he is an Indiana native

A ton of work. Provided any documentation still exists, we may yet uncover it.
@@chasingbilly maybe he wrote his birthplace down on a form when he signed up for a croquet tournament
It's on the back of the croquet photo

Excellent. And so many were undocumented and under the radar, so that it's very difficult to establish a certain connection to Billy.
