I have both and I retire from the military in exactly 6 months. I'm really torn on whether I should just leave my military TSP there or transfer it into my civilian TSP. Not sure what the benefit will be, if any.
Well Samantha I would ask why do you have both at the same time? I ask because Roth IRA has larger maint expenses as opposed to a Roth TSP. And most fed employees receive a match when contributing to a Roth TSP. Personally I would invest more into the Roth tsp since maint fees are so low, like around 29-33 cents per $1000 to manage it. Now, if you are out the military and don’t have a fed job, by all means contribute to a IRA. I think it’s best to let your money stay in tsp and allocate the % as you see fit. Again, I look at what it cost to manage your retirement and the gains.

I have money in my TSP and another Job I just left. I want to consolidate my retirement accounts. Should I transfer TSP and former Job to my new job 401k or to an IRA? Or just leave it? I have some tax free contributions from combat but not a ton. Maybe $2000. Thank you for your help.
Do you have to be 59.5 in order to do this? I would like to transfer a bit from TSP into self directed IRA (SDIRA). I am being told is it not possible from TSP.
@@Uj2nV One cannot normally transfer their *current* job's TSP/401(k)/retirement plan to an IRA while they are still working. They can transfer a TSP/401(k)/retirement plan from a *prior* employer to an IRA. If you'd like money in an IRA simply contribute $6,000 yearly to a traditional or Roth IRA.
Al Rocky thank you for sharing that. I was leaning towards that as the only solution. It would allow me to move funds to real estate or investing opportunities in the future.
Sorry, information I need but can't sit through these crayon drawing presentations, not sure who who thought they were helpful for adults. Will continue my search.

I use the Roth TSP. My spread is 85% C Fund 10% S Fund and 5% I Fund
There really isn't a wrong way to do it as long as you have at least 90% in a combination of C and S.
Congratulations on 1k subs! I didn't notice when it happened exactly, but keep up the good work!
Thanks Biggermac! I'll do my best.
Wow he was just at 1k subs 11months ago? That’s great!!

Yes! You can rollover your full or partial tsp fund to ira without penalty when you reach 59 1/2 years old.

TSP is so trash since they limit your investment options, anything with the government is also slow and clunky
