Finding out who your father is blew my mind. But it makes sense and explains your desire, indepth knowledge, and storytelling ability. It may take me a while to digest this one, I would never have guessed. This made my day. ❤
It's so heartwarming to see you using your UA-cam fame to help other local historians make their mark and maybe jump start their careers. (Yes that was a joke)
I didn't know much about SLO, but both of your videos about the city's history are very informative and I learned a lot. It's also awesome how your dad narrated this one too. Hope you have a great weekend! Take care, Cypher.
@ThatGuy-bh9qh Yeah it's expensive but their is so much fun things to do their if you are willing. Like did you go downtown? Or other areas of Slo? I mean we obviously have different opinions at the end of the day. I have a lot of fond memories of that city. While it's not perfect I definitely consider it a good place.
Immensely enjoy your wide array of videos and by fact-checking your citing sources admire their accuracy. One issue I have is while I appreciate the fast pace of your videos, at times I struggle to fully read and digest the quotes and statements presented because of the fast pace. To point, I consider myself a fairly fast reader who can finish a couple average sized books a week and still have time to sustain a healthy lifestyle of eating, sleeping, and watching NFL football, although sometimes concurrently. Anyway, thanks for the very enlightening content.
History runs through your veins (I bet you've never heard that one before). Wicked cool that you got your dad to narrate for you, I bet he was a helpful resource when doing your thesis on the local history too
Great video. I'm local to the SLO area. Please do a video on San Juan Capistrano that's along the same vein. They are very much sister villages based on their earliest history.
My grandpa was born in Paso Robles and my grandma was born in Templeton CA. U have long history maybe more than lots it was way different than it is now. Good video thank you.
Wtf another human who knows where SLO is??? Bro my moms gallery was across the creeek from the mission for like 15 years! She started at the old creamery when we were kids! I got my 2 AA's from cuesta last fall. Wild to see anyone let alone a big history tuber know the area. Also incredibly cool that you carried on the tradition in your family of studying and documenting the local history.
I love my home town in south San Luis Obispo County. We have the only drive on beach west of Florida an our OHV park in the Oceano Dunes. Indeed , Oceano is my home. 🍓🏖🚂⛵
Great work Cypher, but as a Santa Marian I find it questionable that you’re claiming strawberries but especially tri-tip for SLO. Really? Tri-tip? It’s called Santa Maria style barbecue for a reason!
@@CynicalHistorian tri-tip wasn’t called such until the 1950’s, and Santa Maria existed then, and a Santa Maria Safeway owner started selling it as tri-tip. Others have made the same claim, again the 1950s, as far north as Oakland. Kind of like the two shops in LA that claim they invented the French Dip. In regards to tri-tip, If you’re talking about spit roasting, which was done by the vaqueros here for hundreds of years (some are my ancestors), then sure, you’re right, but that ain’t tri-tip. Santa Maria definitely has a special claim to tri-tip.
It’s sad as hell that Firestone in SLO doesn’t sell tri tip sandwiches anymore-_- I mostly just go to Woodstock’s. And my dad remembers the Poly Royal riots 😂. Also my grandfathers name is on one of the green memorial benches
I ran track there in the late 60s, was pretty good, I tell people I was the fastest runner at SLO High. I rarely call the town SLO and prefer to call it San Luis Obispo as should you. It was tough job growing up there but somebody had to.

Watching this video in San Luis Obispo. Great work!
Looking forward to playing through the whole playlist!
I have not yet had the opportunity/money to visit California, but perhaps some day. Thank you for hosting the collaboration playlist!
I live in SLO, and I can’t believe that the beard of knowlege was so involved in the community. Crazy.
It's a cool little city. I look forward to visiting one day.
You should downtown is always crowded though. Bike lanes can cause traffic but other than that it's beautiful
@ThatGuy-bh9qh Has someone who lived their for 8 years that's a big over simplification

@ThatGuy-bh9qh I go their at least twice a week for school. I haven't lived their since 2016
I was born there too, although I didn't have the income to go to Cal Poly. Thanks for helping to keep the history of this strange little town alive
Pathetic whiner
As a Santa Barbarian, did not know that the tri-county area had any semi famous UA-camrs, but low and behold
Born in Morro Bay, glad you're representing our county!

Great video! Glad to see Mark being productive in retirement and on the Internet.

Absolutely. I regularly called him with questions about local history when writing the thesis. He also proof read my dissertation
Born and raised in Soledad, my parents were caretakers of the Soledad mission before I left for the Air Force :)
Thanks for this history. My dad graduated from Cal Poly in the 50s.
I love your dad's voice, please let him do some of the speeches and quotes, his vouce really sets the mood
Well, that's a cool surprise. I've been watching your videos for a while but had no idea you were from SLO. I grew up in Los Osos.
Great video. I'm local to the SLO area. Please do a video on San Juan Capistrano that's along the same vein. They are very much sister villages based on their earliest history.
Your dad is the genius who knew everything on Pawn Stars?!?!?!?!?!
My grandpa was born in Paso Robles and my grandma was born in Templeton CA. U have long history maybe more than lots it was way different than it is now. Good video thank you.
would love to see more content from your dad on the channel, great stuff!
This is so cool! I didnt know you were a fellow mustang! I really appreciated learning about more where I currently live
Been waiting for this! Do Humboldt county please
I just saw you're Father on CALIFORNIA'S Gold with Huell Howser. "Oh my GOSH......look at this!" "Amazing!!"❤

its so funny to see the guy I remember from watching pawn stars as a kid is your dad. small world :)
I would like to go back to SLO some day.
Great work Cypher, but as a Santa Marian I find it questionable that you’re claiming strawberries but especially tri-tip for SLO. Really? Tri-tip? It’s called Santa Maria style barbecue for a reason!
It's the entire central coast. Santa Maria didn't exist when all that started, so y'all definitely have no special claim to it
@@CynicalHistorian tri-tip wasn’t called such until the 1950’s, and Santa Maria existed then, and a Santa Maria Safeway owner started selling it as tri-tip. To the name, not the cut
SLO is beautiful!!!
Holy crap your the son of the PawnStars History Guy
oh wow. i might have met your dad a couple of times while growing up in the area
we already did this.
lol imagine being in California
me and my homies chill in Ohio
a dozen people from my high school, that I know of, went to SLO for Univ., from San Jose, I went to UCSD.
Do you recommend any good books for someone first getting into SLO history? 1800s- early 1900s SLO?
Dan's book, linked in the description, is still the best starting point
It’s sad as hell that Firestone in SLO doesn’t sell tri tip sandwiches anymore-_- I mostly just go to Woodstock’s. And my dad remembers the Poly Royal riots 😂. Also my grandfathers name is on one of the green memorial benches
I'm pretty sure they still sell it. Had some a mere year ago myself
@@CynicalHistorian oh I guess they started selling it again. There was a 2 month period where they didn’t for whatever reason
probably pandemic related. at least that's over
Cool I went to colleged there

SLO mentioned
That was good. Almost too fast. So much I never heard before
Your dad is the Beard of Knowledge???
Does your dad still work this job?
Do you mean a director of museums? He retired in 2021. If you meant SLO specifically, we moved in 1994
another rare actual born Californian.
I'm also a fifth generation Californian
@@CynicalHistorian 3rd! even rarerer!
The best strawberries are grown in quadalupe
It’s slow in SLO 🐢🐢🐢
Go stangs (if you know you know 🐎)
