It's a shame Nikon stopped making rifle scopes. One of my favorites to this day is a Nikon with a turret calibrated for standard velocity 22lr. Rather than having drop points in the reticle, you just turn the exposed turret to your shooting distance as it's marked after getting it sighted in. Good quality glass too!
I totally agree with you about the Nikons. I put a 3-9x40 Monarch on my '06 30+ years ago. Its still one of my favorites today. Image clarity is right there with my Leupold costing 4 times more.
Just the engineer in me, I wonder about those rifled chokes and how much stress they're under when that slug slams into the rifling. In a fully rifled bore, a bullet starts rotation early in acceleration. In other words, not going that quickly when they start to rotate. In this shotgun, more than likely the slug is already doing 1400-1500 FPS when it hits that rifling. That's gotta put a significant amount of rotational strain on that choke. My guess is the reaction causes the choke to tighten rather than loosen. .. I see your little dog bought himself a Harley Davidson.
Correct about the rotation. The rifling is always opposite to the threading on the choke causing it to self tighten so to speak. much the same as bolts on the front of engine crankshafts.
I've seen guns torque in the hands of people in slow motion video, as a counter-action to heavy bullets resisting rotation in the rifling. Have to remember that rifling causes bullets to spin some ridiculously high RPM, way faster than many realize.
1:35 twist x 4" Let's assume the slug travels 24" before it touches the choke rifling. I bet that slug hasn't rotated more than 2 revolutions in that distance. The only means it has to rotate is the breeze blowing across those little fins, imparting rotation like rocket fins. Buffalo said the choke has a 1:35 twist rate. Let's assume 1,400 fps slug speed by the time it reaches the rifling. Let's also assume the rifling in the choke is 4 inches long. On to the math: 1400 feet in 1 second, converted is 16,800 inches in a second. At this rate, the slug hits the rifling instantly imparting rotation across 4 inches of choke, or .00024 seconds to transverse the choke. After leaving the choke (assuming no slow-down), the slug is spinning at 28,800 RPM. Yes, you read that right. Whatever minor rotation it has before hitting the choke is essentially inconsequential compared to how quickly it has to begin rotating. For sake of my math, 0 RPM to 28,800 RPM in 0.00024 seconds. 480 revolutions per second.
Thank you sir. I ordered a rifled choke for my smooth bore after seeing your video. I’ll let you know how deer season goes. Wishing all the hunters out there, all the best. Fabulous video!!

Like your new shooting bench; that might be one reason you haven’t done that trick before. Sighting in slug guns is no fun day at the range. I gave up on those big long shot shells for hunting waterfowl. It got to the point I only use 2¾ and 3-inch shells for hunting waterfowl. Them big old shells do kill ducks and geese better but, if you like eating them they don’t leave much left to eat a lot of times. I was hunting with an old duck hunter in a public shooting blind one time. I had a Mag 10. He looked at me when he saw that thing and said we ain’t hunting flying elephants just ducks. He was right and I was young and dumb. He said; the secret to killing ducks; is you just wait till their close young man. He was right again; and you don’t have to walk far to find them neither. The fun thing about using a Mag 10 was the echo the bad thing was; every duck for miles knows where not to go. I have two AL 390 shotguns one 12 and one 20. If I hunt little woodland beaver ponds I take the 20 and it does a fine job. Something to think about. You should leave that scope on the next time you go duck hunting for your hunting buddies to ponder why they never thought doing that before you did.
I also like your new shooting bench. I've never seen you shoot left handed, but it looks like it's designed to accommodate that equally if you were inclined to. As an ambidextrous shooter, I like that design. Very good slug shooting BTW!
I made it to accommodate my son who shoots long guns left handed. He's right handed but left eye dominant. This way he can use the bench too. He's only 12 and is becoming quite the marksman. Thank you for the comment.
Excellent comment sir. I enjoy having you in the comments section of my videos. Always well written and easy to understand. I can tell that it comes from experience. So thank you.
@@buffalosoutdoors I enjoy your channel and things you cover in your videos. I like seeing someone spending time shooting shotguns and testing shot shells and slugs. Most people don’t realize how much difference there is to using the right shot shell and choke. Most shotgun shooters buy a 12 bore and never understand the reason to use anything else. The difference in shot shells and shotguns are much harder to get right than getting a rifle to shoot well. Your video brought the memory of hunting ducks with that old grizzly faced duck hunter back. Some experiences you learn hunting; should never be forgotten. When you shoot five slugs in one hole; you got something right. I had to laugh; when someone made the comment on not hitting the bullseye.

for a 50 yard gun, all the groups were acceptable. two decent and one outstanding. The great thing about that last one is I think you might have a legit 100 yard gun there. Curious to know the drop off at 100 yards.
First... Outstanding Group. Second....Amazing what people don't really know about shooting! But are Experts just the same! LOL I discovered that same Rifled Choke back in 2007 or 2008. I saw a good degree of group improvement when using it. I was hog hunting with a Benelli Nova back then. No scope, but with bead sites was able to take hogs in Texas out to a good distance. Even took one on the move at around 65-70 yards. I figured he was going to flank me and set up a liner ambush, with support, assault, the whole 9 yards! I remember the guys in my group asking how did I make that shot with a slug and a smooth bore! That choke remained on that shotgun until about a month ago when I decided to take it clay shooting at my local outdoor range. Nice video. Thanks for putting your findings on video for us all to enjoy. Subscribed. Rangers.... Lead the Way!

His thought was to shoot it prone to gain the most stable shot.. (Thanks Pop!!) Although the scope didn't cut me,, my shoulder still remembers that fine day... Great video! I bought one for my mossberg 930 after watching your video and my rifle slugs are in way better groups at 50 yards than the standard improved cylinder choke I previously used.
Bro, very well done and lots of solid information. I've been struggling with grouping rifled slugs. Lots of bad press about rifled choke tubes but seeing this video was encouraging and proof that they can improve accuracy. Checking that your slug had the same twist as your choke was a very good advice. Ive liked and subscribed.. Thank you very much!
Well there ya go. Another fine piece of work!! After watching the video I must ask, how is the shoulder feeling after taking those 3 to 4 inch punches?? Excellent shootin ole fella!!!
I was always wondering why i would get stray flyer when sighting in slugs for my 12ga... Good to know I am a Firearms Master at something finally!!! Albeit a flinch but oh wrll, beggers cant be choosers 🤣👍👍
I have bruised my shoulder many a time with slugs through my shotty, then, I bought a semi (weatherby SA-08). What a difference, almost a joy to shoot. The gun soaks up most of the recoil. It is now my go to gun for slugs as well as duck and goose loads. Now the only time I bruise my shoulder is after a couple boxes of 7 1/2's through my over/under at the trap range.
Great to see this. I picked up one of those rifled choke tubes few years ago for my 20ga pump. I always used those sluggers for hunting. Great bullets.
I have one of these rifled choke tubes for my BIKAL 153 semi auto 12 gage. so this demonstration is very helpful to me. I also have a mosberg maverick 88 with a full rifled barrel and sights. yes, I cleaned a bunch of lead out of it when I got it used off ebay. I have not shot slugs with either of my guns yet but its nice to see that rifled barrels do help a lot.
Way back in the 80's I tried the brands available and there was only 1 accurate slug,.... (12ga) Winchester. In the 90's I did it with a 20 Mossberg 500 smooth bore was the same,... Improve cylinder and 20ga Winchester slugs. Changed the barrel to a Rifled one then there were many accurate slugs rifled and Sabot. I never tried a Rifled choke tube. LightField slugs were as good as Winchester slugs on paper. None of my other guns did well with slugs but were excellent with bird shot. And single shots with full choke's A single shot FIE .410 shot like a rifle and an NEF shot all over. I did my testing in my prime with sights and beads. I totally understand scoping your gun to get a true representation of the performance. Good video.
Hey Buffalo, I was assigned to do an ammunition test shortly after I EOD’d at the Firearms Division of F.L.E.T.C. The test consisted in firing vertically into an approximately 20 foot steel tube that was designed to permit projectile recovery. Basically all hollow point duty revolver .38 / .357 handgun ammunition was to be tested. The tests to me were quite interesting. At the end of the tests I was to fire a 1 oz foster 12 ga. Slug into the pipe. I positioned an Remington 870 over the pipe and pressed the trigger. It was amazing! There was a huge explosion followed by a geyser that a passerby said was 50+ feet! The really interesting thing though was that the recovered rifled slug showed no nose deformation, but the skirt of the slug had moved forward so that the recovered slug was flat! It looked almost like a silver dollar.
Now that is mighty good to know Buffalo! Okay now to check the new Maverick to see which barrel might have a screw-in choke. Then to buy a rifled choke for that barrel. It came with an improved cylinder barrel and a longer vent rib field barrel.
I’m new to your channel, but have to say I find your tests very informative And enjoyable to watch. Im 59 and have allways owned one shotgun or another since childhood on the farm. But for the first time, I finally purchased a Benelli shotgun with changeable choke tubes! And you have been part of the education bringing me up to speed on what possible chokes to buy, and the differences between them… yep, have a Carlson’s rifled choke tube on the way… I was impressed with what that did for a foster slug. and since I use 00 buck, your other tests have certainly applied to anything I do. Just wanted to drop a thankyou.

I almost did not watch this b/c I just knew you were wasting your time. Refiled slug thru rifled choke tube. You twisted my brain! Excellent!
"Impressive"? Incredible!
I salute you sir! 👍
Wonder if someone didn’t take the insert out for a while and shot it a bunch would it impact tighten where it was hard to loosen
I've seen guns torque in the hands of people in slow motion video, as a counter-action to heavy bullets resisting rotation in the rifling. Have to remember that rifling causes bullets to spin some ridiculously high RPM, way faster than many realize.
The slug is rotating do to its shape so that means the rifling just needs to speed it up to some degree.
1:35 twist x 4"
Let's assume the slug travels 24" before it touches the choke rifling.
On to the math:
1400 feet in 1 second, converted is 16,800 inches in a second.
Some people just don't understand that group shooting is just that. When happy with that then adjust scope accordingly. Great presentation Buffalo.
Another excellent review, scientific and beautifully produced. Thanks buffalo
Thank you! Always glad to see you in the comments section!
Holy crap that's awesome, Thanks for the video!
Excellent Shooting . A foster slug printing 2.5" high at 50 yards id dead on at 100 yards .
Thanks for the info!
Thank you sir. I ordered a rifled choke for my smooth bore after seeing your video. I’ll let you know how deer season goes. Wishing all the hunters out there, all the best. Fabulous video!!
I love all your videos, but I found this one particularly interesting and informative. And yes, it IS a good way to develop a nice flinch. :D
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it and found it informative! I truly wonder sometimes if I am helping folks or not so it is always nice to hear this kind of feedback!
A wonderful test using good, standard methods, no messing about. Taofledermaus sent me here and I'm glad he did. On a less important side note, as a Brit I enjoy the varying accents of my nation. They change almost from one square mile to the next which is something I find interesting. Your accent is nothing short of wonderful. What a pleasure to listen to. Thanks for the video.
"Some people really struggle with basic thing's!"
That's golden my friend!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
When that 3rd round went in the same hole 🤩
Yeah! For a second I wondered if he missed the paper, but the rest proved he didn't.
Mike I've seen my fair share of shooters in my 52yrs of running deer , bear, water fowl, upland game bird's, even racoon& squirrel.. just please remember optics was how much power perception and dead reckoning and a Damned a kmisr Good Shot! !!!!;One Office
I am so glad I boogered that first group with the rifled tube up because if it had been "good enough" I wouldn't have shot that beautiful gopher hole!
Man, it just doesn't get any better than this👍
I always enjoy your vids, the effort and thought you put into them is evident. Truly a pleasure to watch and answers questions I didn’t even know I’d have.
Thank you very much for leaving this comment! I appreciate it!
That fifth shot now beign a flyer is so satisfying!!! Congratulations!!!
for a 50 yard gun, all the groups were acceptable. two decent and one outstanding. The great thing about that last one is I think you might have a legit 100 yard gun there. Curious to know the drop off at 100 yards.
Excellent and informative video. Thank you.
Impressive!
That's only a 1-1/2 MOA group.
That's into sniper accuracy.
Good to know.
Yeah, I can barely shoot my rifles that well. That's some seriously impressive performance (both by the shotgun/choke and especially the shooter).
This is as good as it gets Sir! My hat is off to you. Well done!
I was not expecting to see a dog riding a pig when i clicked this video
THey belong to my daughter. I feel like I live in a cartoon world sometimes!
Thanks for another very cool video! Excellent shooting as always!
Thank you!
I can totally relate to "how to become a "flinch master" I recall the day my Pop asked me to help him sight in his Remington 7600 35 Wheelan.. His thought was to shoot it prone to gain the most stable shot.. (Thanks Pop!!) Although the scope didn't cut me,, my shoulder still remembers that fine day... Great video! Cherish your time here and the one's you love!
Pop R.I.P.04/08/21
Good testing as love the results and grouping....Good stuff....
Thanks Scott!
I bought one for my mossberg 930 after watching your video and my rifle slugs are in way better groups at 50 yards than the standard improved cylinder choke I previously used.
Your the man. Such a genuine dude right here keep up the good work buffalo! 🐃
I appreciate that! Really. I do. I get a lot of hate on some of my videos but it's nice to know that some of yall dig what I am doing! Thank you!
Wow really interesting results. Plus Thanks I took your advice and I’m an expert at flinching now. Ha!!!
LOL! Glad you mastered it!
I'm in too!!🤣😂
You are correct about the slugs giving you a working over. Excellent shooting
If that impressed Buffalo, imagine how us mere mortals feel? Great shooting!
😂🤣😂 It certainly did impress me! Thanks very much!
Excellent job. Thank you.
Well there ya go.
Another fine piece of work!!
After watching the video I must ask, how is the shoulder feeling after taking those 3 to 4 inch punches??
Excellent shootin ole fella!!!
It was a little sore for a day or two...not gonna lie. I am getting soft!
That's what happens when you get...........😎
I was looking for a slug barrel for my 835 yesterday. After seeing this I'm going for a choke for my 1200. Thanks for your good experiments.
Thar's impressive, I'd hang that up too!
Thank you! It went on my reloading room wall!
Just for the record I learn a lot from your videos. Thank you very much!
I was always wondering why i would get stray flyer when sighting in slugs for my 12ga... Good to know I am a Firearms Master at something finally!!! Albeit a flinch but oh wrll, beggers cant be choosers 🤣👍👍
And even the animals on range getting ready it seems by forming their own heavy armored division🤣🤣
LOL! Glad to hear you have it mastered! Now go teach it to as many others as you can 😂🤣😂
HAHAHA!
Who here from taofledermaus' stream?
Me
Wow! Great Group! I need a Carlson rifled insert for my 870.
Great video I’m going to get one of those rifled choke tubes now. 👍
Good video.
I got these fir my wife's 870 20ga and it shoots really well with that rifled choke
Awesome!
I like that he shot first and took the time to explain the results
Excellent video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Nice shooting !!! Very well done video , seriously answering the viewer's question ... I feel highly informed ! Thanks for your great videos !
Thanks for the video Buffalo
You're very welcome!
Now that is mighty good to know Buffalo! Okay now to check the new Maverick to see which barrel might have a screw-in choke. Then to buy a rifled choke for that barrel. It came with an improved cylinder barrel and a longer vent rib field barrel.
12 GA slugs , flinching and aspirin... The perfect combination. Great video.
I’m new to your channel, but have to say I find your tests very informative
And enjoyable to watch. Im 59 and have allways owned one shotgun or another since childhood on the farm.
But for the first time, I finally purchased a Benelli shotgun with changeable choke tubes! And you have been part of the education bringing me up to speed on what possible chokes to buy, and the differences between them… yep, have a Carlson’s rifled choke tube on the way… I was impressed with what that did for a foster slug. and since
I use 00 buck, your other tests have certainly applied to anything I do.
Just wanted to drop a thankyou.
Great video editing and great instructions on the choke tube. Like the way you describe all the factors and functions. Incredible grouping.
great video what i would really like to see next same test but whit a fully rifled barrel and some standard federal rifled slugs. againvideo very informative
Question: When you are prepping to shoot a lot of shoulder meat mashing 12ga loads, do you prep for the video by pounding raw meat like Rocky did?
This is amazing. I don't think anyone else has done this so well.
People that don't understand not hitting the bullseye don't understand the point of your video 🍻🇨🇦
