brian mellblom haha i feel you man. One of the only times I ever cried after a soccer match. This and also Brazil's exit from the 2010 world cup against the Netherlands.
Oh man...There was the 7-1 rout by Germany, which crushed Brazil's dreams. Then came a red card and a PK (but didn't the foul actually occur outside the box?) in the second minute of the third place match vs. the Netherlands, which rubbed salt on a fresh wound. But that the final goal Brazil would concede in the tournament came in freaking stoppage time was the ultimate "kicking them while they're down" moment. Just when they thought it wouldn't get any worse, here's one more goal to remember 2014 by. Oh yeah, and this all happened in their home country. I was a California Angels fan in 1995 and witnessed their slow, painful collapse, which was statistically the worst collapse in MLB history. They were sitting atop their division by 10.5 games on August 16, and then went 14-28, including two separate nine-game losing streaks. They ended up tied with Seattle, who defeated them in a tiebreaker game by a score of 9-1, ending their season and denying them their first shot at the playoffs in over a decade. And yet, as soul-crushing as that was, I'm still not sure whether that's worse than what Brazil suffered this year. Holy freaking ouch.
Honest question, not trying to be mean, I just truly want to know cus I'll be coming out there in July. I was out there Aug. 2017, I had no team colors on, I was standing on the other side of the pitch from where the visiting team fans are and for some reason you guys think you can intimidate me, why is that, is it cus i'm alone, or is it cus most guys don't think a women alone from out of state posses much of a threat? Or is it cus of the team I support, we do kinda hate each other.
This was the MLS Cup that changed everything for Major League Soccer. Ratings and audience was at its lowest point here, and interest in it wasn’t as high as it is now. This championship game featured star galore: Landon Donovan, David Beckham, Kyle Beckerman, and Nick rimando. A David vs Goliath matchup. Since this game, interest and for this league grew exponentially, and continues to grow. MLS Cup 2009 will always remain a classic.
EPIC match! As a spectator, you really couldn't ask for anything more. And as an RSL fan, you couldn't have dreamed of such a good outcome. Too bad we couldn't make a deeper run than we did this year.
@Themesticks The word "Soccer" Started in England at Oxford and was wildly used in England until the NASL got big and it was incorrectly linked to the USA. The English need to learn about their own sport.
the top two teams from each conference made the playoffs while the next four teams in the supporter's shield standings were wild card teams. a wild card team from the West (RSL) made it through the Eastern Conference bracket to set up the all-West showdown
I know this was 4 years ago, but to add to the above comment. The league’s schedule was still balanced back then. Meaning that every team in the league played each other twice a year. It allows for a western conference team to fairly qualify for the playoffs on the eastern side of the bracket based on points alone. Impossible these days because the league is too damn big, and you play about half of the opposite conference’s teams once a year.
its good for the MLS that players like Beckham is featured in the league it certainly attracts possive attitude towards youth in the US and hopefully encourage them to become like such player(s)
The USA are the best country to live if you´re a sports fan like me. It's simply gracious. Soccer has this problem of not assuring the thrill and excitement (some games can be really boring), but no one puts a show like you, americans. Greetings from Portugal.
I'm from Seattle, and I lightly followed the Sounders in 2009. I was pretty skeptical of soccer. Then, I went to this game, wound up in the RSL support section, and got hooked the the MLS. Never looked back. Sounders FTW.
Soccer is the most popular sport in Europe, Brazil, rest of South America, Central America, maybe in Africa, and now i hope it becomes popular in the US.
This was before Portland became an MLS team so I was rooting for RSL of course. What an upset and years later Borchers would join the Timbers and help them win their first as well.
I would thank those who don't live in the United States but still wish the MLS well! We need more foreign respect in order to grow our league to what we hope to be a real competitor for top class talent.
DAMN GOOD MATCH! MLS IS GROWING HEY IF THERE IS NO NFL FOR 2011, THEY SHOULD SHOW MLS GAMES ON FOX AND CBS! OR AT LEAST RUGBY, I DON'T KNOW JUST A THOUGHT!
@Themesticks I know it was originally called football, But the word "Soccer" is an ENGLISH word that many countries use today, yet everyone uses it as an excuse to hate on the USA for the sake of hating on the USA.
@hanstermovies yes it's really getting popular here and especially with this world cup showing the U.S. had I see it getting even more poplular. GOOD LUCK! AGAINST URUGUAY, I HOPE YOU GUYS WIN IT ALL!
Omar also cost Donovan to hurt break his hand as he didn't need to make that slide run like he did. Next year though. With a few more draft picks and new signings during this off season the Galaxy are a favorite to make a repeat trip to the cup final.
Plus the sub RSL made for their injury was a better player than they initially had on the field in my opinion. Their injuries did'n hurt them in the least. According to Bruce Arena, Dema Kovalenko was to come on in the second half; and Alan Gordon perhaps as well.
@welcometourf Doesn't MLS have this rule of the association supporting the transfer from a top player, in order to help promote the league? I read about this somewhere
@TheKrismak No, they do film penalty's like that in the big matches, sometimes you get 1 pen taking from that angle, but usually its just stand angles and this would be the reply in big matches where the stadiums can have a camera like that. European football just focuses on football nothing else when it comes down to it. Watch the Champions league final united v chelsea, AND THAT HAD TENSION, i remember crying, screaming to joy all in 20 seconds
I can't understand what team is the crowd behind the penalti goals supporting. People just don't react effusively like in Europe. Anyway, I'm glad US football (or soccer) is developing and growing every year. Cheers from Portugal :)
@BellezzaSurf Mano... eu n queria recordar-te isto, mas lembras-te de 2002? EUA x Portugal, 3-2? Cumprimentos.
I agree that Beckham deserved a yellow for the kick to Morales. LA was just plain unlucky that night. I followed them the whole season and RSL winning it was bullcrap. Although they were the better team that night, LA had a way better season. LA had 2 injuries and really tired players. To me, LA was the 2009 Champs but congrats to RSL anyway... I really felt for Morales though...
@Hitmonchan107 Well, It's called Football in the first place because it has it's roots to Rugby Football, So I don't see why it should be changed. The Europeans need to learn that there are several sports called "Football" and that name refers to whatever is the most popular in the area. Like Australia and NZ call Rugby Football "Football" and Association Football "Soccer. We call American Football "Football" and Association Football "Soccer". It's just localization.
@Xxcristiano7x They beat Seattle's b-team 7-0. And considering the results that Man U is putting up in the EPL right now, I don't think it's such a big deal. They beat ARSENAL 8-2. A bigger win then any of the MLS teams.
Back in 2009 the playoffs were formatted differently where only the top 2 teams of each conference (Columbus & Chicago in the East, LA & Houston in the West) were assured a playoff spot. After that the next 4 clubs with the highest points regardless of conference (Seattle, Chivas USA, New England, RSL) were given a playoff spot. RSL finished the regular season with 40 pts as did DC United, but RSL took DC United's playoff spot in the East because it had a better goal differential throughout the season. They did away with this format after the 2011 playoffs.
@Twister82697 I hardly doubt that European (American) football leagues suck. I didn't even know they existed. But you can't really compare that to the MLS since the MLS is much bigger. My point was that it seems like the creators (not sure what to call them) of MLS think that they have to make the sport more "American friendly" and that your football fans can't appreciate what the rest of the world loves, because you're different and a little better than everyone else.
@CashSmeller It's totally fair. Team with the best record gets home field advantage. That's how they do it in sports. MLS needs to cut out this neutral field bs for their biggest games.
@Twister82697 In this case it is quantity, not quality since we were talking about the amount of supporters. I agree with you that football is the biggest sport over here, no doubt. But in some northern countries hockey and bandy is actually bigger, in some countries in the Balkans basketball is big. Tennis and cycling is big in some places. We have all the sports you have except for baseball and american football. Feels a bit off topic now, the americanization in MLS was my concern.
@welcometourf European here, MLS is actually the only league im interested atm since all the others are too fucking theatrical, MLS is all about the GAME
@mmolaibonno The team the represents canada is the winner of their open cup. But I don't think they get past the prelims. To get into a group for Concacaf Champions league
Almost ten years ago. Still can't believe RLS won this game and only in its 5th year in existence. #RealSaltLake
Danny Boy Portland also won MLS Cup in their 5th year. Just a fun fact.
And now LAFC is added to that list
Lies again? Pregnant Fat Get Laid
Watching this ten years later and still waiting for this kind of bliss again
I revisit this video 3-4 times a year... Most exciting squad we've ever had. Go Go RSL!
it’s tradition as a rsl fan to rewatch this every once in a while
Every time that I watch this ( which is quite often) I get chills like none other. Come on RSL let's win the MLS title this year
This year
I remember when this happened when I was like 12. I was actually devastated.
I had to get my jaw fixed after Donovan's miss.
brian mellblom haha i feel you man. One of the only times I ever cried after a soccer match. This and also Brazil's exit from the 2010 world cup against the Netherlands.

Same here man I was 14 and I remember being so heartbroken after.
dxman100 Donovan choked in the penalty hard :0 If he would of made it I can almost guarantee that Galaxy would of won the cup
Still watch this classic all the time
YAY. Real Salt Lake is my home team!

These were the best highlights of soccer I've ever seen. It was a real good and close game. My favorite part was the last shootout round

Again 2009. RSL can do it. Go RSL !

RSL vs LA Galaxy 2018 and RSL are still on top with 6-2 win!
I'm from argentina, and here we probably never watch MLS. It's a very good league. I love it.
That was one of the best days of my life
Heck of a Finals. Hard to believe that such a mighty LA Galaxy team with Donovan and Beckham and coached by Arenas were beaten.
As someone who started watching MLS in 2014 I kind of want to know how two western conference teams ended up in MLS Cup.
the top two teams from each conference made the playoffs while the next four teams in the supporter's shield standings were wild card teams. a wild card team from the West (RSL) made it through the Eastern Conference bracket to set up the all-West showdown

its so nice to relive this game!!!!
2021 is ours !!!
Still watch this and just get choked up, especially with Robbie Findley game tying goal. The jubilation ❤
I was 19 years old. Back when RSL was actually a decent team.
It was a great birthday present! 😄
Nick Rimando the BEST!!!
thx a lot for posting this.
Great game, I was there. I wanted LA to win, but RSL seemed to want it more.
man, I want so much fans in the swiss stadiums :(
respect to the MLS, great League !
piece* and I don't know about you but Rimando is one of the best!!! #RSL
One of the best games
I'm from Seattle, and I lightly followed the Sounders in 2009. I was pretty skeptical of soccer. Then, I went to this game, wound up in the RSL support section, and got hooked the the MLS. Never looked back. Sounders FTW.
Seth Falstein yeah us rsl fans are few but we make a lot of noise
12 years ago and guess who’s still smashing the sounders today😂
Soccer is the most popular sport in Europe, Brazil, rest of South America, Central America, maybe in Africa, and now i hope it becomes popular in the US.

2012 here we come! This is our year again! RSL TID! ! !
nick rimando hasn't been my favorite MLS keeper for the past 5 years for nothing.
I would thank those who don't live in the United States but still wish the MLS well! We need more foreign respect in order to grow our league to what we hope to be a real competitor for top class talent.
@Themesticks Australia, New Zealand, most of East Asia, and South Africa also call it Soccer.
DAMN GOOD MATCH! MLS IS GROWING HEY IF THERE IS NO NFL FOR 2011, THEY SHOULD SHOW MLS GAMES ON FOX AND CBS! OR AT LEAST RUGBY, I DON'T KNOW JUST A THOUGHT!

How does mls cup with beckham not sell out in Seattle? If tickets are 50 bucks im flying across to see that game even if it's not my team
Omar also cost Donovan to hurt break his hand as he didn't need to make that slide run like he did. Next year though. With a few more draft picks and new signings during this off season the Galaxy are a favorite to make a repeat trip to the cup final.

Iremember watching it live at Qwest field for my birthday. What a great birthday present until the galaxy lost 😂💀

2018!!!
We got it this year let's go LA! Beck's final year just like he did in Madrid, will get us the title.
@TheKrismak No, they do film penalty's like that in the big matches, sometimes you get 1 pen taking from that angle, but usually its just stand angles and this would be the reply in big matches where the stadiums can have a camera like that. I would like to dedicate this win to Kale & Jess who are from Salt Lake City.
Wow, I forgot that kreis was the coach, what happened to him, he flopped everywhere he went( after leaving rsl)
another question, which team represents Canada in the north american champions league if there is any?
What a great way to finish.
I can't understand what team is the crowd behind the penalti goals supporting. People just don't react effusively like in Europe. Anyway, I'm glad US football (or soccer) is developing and growing every year. Cheers from Portugal :)

6:15 Grabavoy went to the high school I go to right now
which two?
That could have been Beckham's 1st tittle that year if it wasn't for Landon Donovan missing that penalty kick and Ricketts getting hurt.
Great game.
Why was the game in Seattle?
@Hitmonchan107 Well, It's called Football in the first place because it has it's roots to Rugby Football, So I don't see why it should be changed. @meisterkusen04 The average is about 20,000. But there are some that reach 40,000.
@FalconBoxe You know a brit coined the term soccer, right?
I wish i can win the MLS Cup for Toronto FC one day!!
@Xxcristiano7x They beat Seattle's b-team 7-0. And considering the results that Man U is putting up in the EPL right now, I don't think it's such a big deal. They beat ARSENAL 8-2. A bigger win then any of the MLS teams.
Oh whats that? A national Championship-Final? A Decision has to fall in a regular Season!
WOOOO RLS!
5:32 GREGG!!!! glory to Columbus!!

And yet again..I ask how did RSL play the Galaxy if these are both Western Conference teams??
Back in 2009 the playoffs were formatted differently where only the top 2 teams of each conference (Columbus & Chicago in the East, LA & Houston in the West) were assured a playoff spot. Thanks for clearing that up I was proper confused! lol
Jd Dehl No problem 👍
@FourLokoAddict510 Then why Mexico finished behind USA in the qualifieres for the 2010 World Cup? And in the finals, both teams fell in the last 16
Where is Keano?
Good Football !!!
damn it LA should have won, but real salt lake was amazing at this game they do deserve it

football not soccer...and you from Holland..pity
but on the other hand I agree with you I am quite surprised with the attention too
