Hello from Indonesian Aviation community yes there are a lot of Avgeeks here. For your info Garuda's all economy A330s are old A330-300s with registration PK-GPA to PK-GPG they are used on high density domestic routes and Hajj routes. PK-GPM to PK-GPS are A330-200s with GPP to GPS featuring in flight Wi-Fi. Newer A330-300s are from PK-GPR to PK-GHD. PK-GPZ to PK-GHD are the A330-300 with the new leading edge flap design and features new business and economy class seats. PK-GHE to PK-GHG are A330-900 NEO with newest business and economy class seats. Terima kasih (thank you) for visiting Indonesia.
Wouldn’t it be nice if all airports reflected a bit of their country’s architecture and history like here? Edinburgh airport, my home, would be a castle :)
I love Garuda. Paul you must try their business class. Their int'l business fares are usually cheaper than the competition and the inflight service is amazing.
Their biggest problems are lack of international routes (no US flights and limited European destinations). And Problems with ground handling in Jakarta as a main hub. I mean they got new terminal here in Jakarta, but some of the services need to be polished for the ground crew, I experience some problems flying with them often, especially in domestic flights.
@@stephenvincent4706 Wake up. Its not the old times anymore. They have improved a lot. the airline is pretty solid to fly with. Maybe give it a try. Remember, you can never write something negative about an airline without a try.

I thoroughly enjoyed that video, thank you Paul. You have my greatest sympathy with the humidity, it drives me almost to distraction. Garuda seems an excellent airline.
We’re flying to Bali via Hong Kong on Cathay next year. I was looking at Garuda once we’re in Asia but the multi-city itinerary with Cathay was too good to turn down. Hopefully one day!
I did a lot of internal flights around Indonesia in 2018 and Garuda was the best. Even got a meal on the short flight to lombok from bali which was about a 20 minute journey! Lion air were not so good, more of a budget feel.
Lion Air are indeed budget airlines, if you want to try full service airline other than Garuda, I suggest you fly with Batik Air. They're still part of Lion Group but they're full service, made-to-compete with Garuda.
We flew Garuda 2 years ago from Perth to Bali on Xmas Eve. Very good service in economy with excellent IFE. Only a 3.5 hour flight ( that's still less that Domestic flights from Perth to Sydney) but very enjoyable. Garuda have really lifted their game and the new Bali airport is pretty good. Pretty certain my hotel in Jimbaram, the Movenpick, was in there. Really looking forward to going back there although Kuta etc is a toilet and best avoided.
Airline food that features their regional cuisine gives you an opportunity to sample something that is outside of your own bubble. Part of the fun of travelling. An opportunity for discovery.
Great video. I have realized I had been pronouncing “Garuda” incorrectly! The food looks great for an economy flight, but Singapore Airlines still tops all the airlines for their economy dishes
Hey Paul, loved this video... The domestic terminal is the former international terminal. The current international terminal actually occupied the now demolished former domestic terminal. Domestic terminal is getting an expansion... but yes, it is "warm" during the afternoon rush... Garuda's boarding music is quite popular in Indonesia, and consists of westerminized traditional music. The newer version since last year, I agree... it's an "acquired taste"... I preferred the previous versions. The slightly later flight have better meal... but this one's OK... the desert? LOL... local pudding... LOL. I'd love to see your arrivals and departures experience at CGK... even the international is warm there... Next time, when this pandemic mess is over, let us know when you're about to get here! :)
I flew Garuda at the beginning of the pandemic, in a repatriation flight from Denpassar to Tokyo, then onwards with KLM to Amsterdam. Two low service flights (no meals, only water to drink). Back to Bali as soon as it is responsible again!

I have tried the A330 all economy in 2019, mostly used for Umrah flight between province , but I am lucky because after Umrah the aircraft required back to CGK, so GA open extra flight use the A330, the registration was PK-GPA until GPG, my route was GA1432 JED-PDG-PLM-CGK, the PLM-CGK was bookable through website and fly every sunday and the GA1433 was CGK-PLM-PDG-JED the CGK-PLM was also bookable and fly every saturday, oh and lastly the service was not a normal domestic flight, they even gave pillow and blanket like international flight
@@Paul_Lucas sometimes they used for trunk domestic routes, but I heard the A330 all economy was phased out, the only negative side of this configuration, there was no PTV installed
Yes the widebody is a cool experience but the nice thing about Garuda is that the 737-800 experience is pretty much exactly the same. The seat pitch is just as wide (probably just a little narrower by 1 or 2 inches) but from my experience GA's Economy class is one of the most spacious in the narrow body segment. The meal would be the same, and even the IFE is the same type of IFE. I do wish GA would start upgrading again, plenty of airlines are moving to a newer IFE system with a nice wide screen and a nice responsive touch screen.

GA no longer flies to London as of now though ... After the Jakarta - Amsterdam - LGW service, they then moved to serving LHR via Singapore (Jakarta's runway weren't strong enough to handle a fully-loaded 777-300ER back then). As Jakarta's runways got the reinforcements they needed, GA served Jakarta - LHR and AMS fully nonstop on both routes. Due to low yield however, the London route became CGK - LHR - DPS and then DPS - KNO (Medan) - LHR before being cancelled altogether. Garuda's slots at London Heathrow are now being leased to Air India, implying that they may try again in the future. To be fair ... I'd say GA handled their London flights wrongly. If I were GA's CEO, I would order Boeing 787-8s or -9s for London and other European / American cities. In Garuda's case the 777-300ER only makes sense for flights to AMS (lots of Indonesian diaspora in the Netherlands), Saudi Arabia for Hajj & Umrah, and some East Asian / Australian cities due to, obviously, its size. Not only is the 787 much easier to fill than a 777-300ER, their specifications allow departures without weight limits not just from Jakarta but also from Bali thus allowing me to cater European vacationers directly instead of relying only on those flying the Kangaroo route, business travels (barely any traffic on this one) and Indonesian diaspora
Excellent video! Makes me nostalgic for a world where travel and being out and about was still possible... I flew Garuda several times in 2016, it's a real gem of an airline. Glad to see you review it!
Nothing wrong with Starbucks coffee. Its all about the barista. That's the hit and miss part. I've had some great coffee from Starbucks but also a few dodgy ones, just as I have with more, as you say, "authentic cafes.
Garuda Indonesia's boarding music is usually: their corporate jingle + assorted Indonesian traditional folk music from across the archipelago rearranged in European orchestra. That pink pudding is coconut pudding. In contrast, pink dessert might generally mean strawberry flavour, even in Indonesia, but for traditional ones, it is best to assume it to be kopyor, a dash of Dutch "stroop" (sweet syrup) and coconut jelly. I am also not a big fan of it too.
Amen on the "world citizen" nonsense. Great video, as always. Corporate travel counselor. None of my accounts permit travel on this airline! Not sure why. Always think you are super brave when you fly one of these "banned" carriers!
Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta has always been very efficient in my experience (and little queuing) with some nice touches. However, things take a downward turn when you then need to get into Jakarta - wow they know how to do traffic!
12:33 it says "Puding dengan Nata de Coco rasa Jambu Merah", means Guava flavored Pudding with Nata de Coco, it tastes sweet and the nata de coco bursts with coconut water. It is a popular delicacy in Indonesia.
