I understand the issue of keeping this issue private. That's the problem. Keeping the issue private gives the appearance that nothing is wrong. Putting it out in public people can't say that they didn't know. Women sexually abused by Harvey Weinstein kept silent. What did that do? It gave him permission to continue his disgusting behavior. Women were at risk. They should have heard something about the man and his behavior. A course correction can't be made in silence. Telling the truth shames the devil. Oprah is not too rich to learn a lesson. The financial backers don't care about black women. The scapegoat is Oprah. They should be called out, too. It ain't just Oprah. Anyone notice that Steven Spelberg's name hasn't been mentioned? It should be.
      Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

    Aunt Fumi,
The problem is not what Monique said.. she spoke the truth. The problem is that most black people never show up for each other. Being on a all black cast we should have roll out the red carpet for each other. If it was a predominantly white cast the carpet would be rolled out. If it was a black person cast in a white film the carpet would be rolled. So when we have the opportunity to have a all black cast with someone as influential as Oprah all these minor things should have been present without having to ask. As Blacks why do we always have to beg or ask for things that is deserving???
Next thoughts... I feel for Taraji and understand where she is coming from but thinking of my pay check and out of my little that is a lot and uncle Sam taking everything, paying for health care, for social security and everyone else that needs to slave me out before I get my bread to eat is sickening.
People do you know that in America we pay taxes and when we file for our taxes for the previous year the government tax us again on our taxes. This is sad...to work hard and feel like You were just rob.
We have to make do with what we have for the life style we have or want.
I work hard and I know actors deal with a lot but show me a person that don't have to work 1, 2 or 3 jobs to make life.
We have to negotiate and speak up for ourselves and most importantly black people have things hard because when we should be unified with one voice everyone wants to speak against each other and that one voice becomes a loud noise and chatter.
I am just sharing my thoughts and I am praying that this matter and the way we treat and deal with each other will become better.
Thank you and let's make 2024 better than the previous years in our lives and do things different to make a positive change.

Fumi, this is the 1st time that I've ever disagreed w/you. Monique didn't do anything. They wanted her to do press for the movie for free. It was hateful, nasty & mean to be blackballed, by black ppl no less. So now Taraji cried & now we're standing by her & black ppl. Period. The only question there is, is that is it true or not?? When you go thru bs the only important questions are when, how, when, where. Is it true or not.

I agree. She is saying the truth. The only reason a lot of ppl can't be in her side is bc she came for oprah. Black woman in the industry are too afraid to come for Oprah bc of all that she has done for them. See that's why you can't owe anyone anything. The reason being, people will complain that you are biting off the hand that feeds you. The thing about having self respect is when you can say. I appreciate all you do, BUT this was not what I deserve or qualify for. I don't think that someone should continue to work in a field where they are not valued. If there is no choice, she will need to find a way to find peace in the struggle. Bc as woman of color I am now seeing how I am living and paid compared to my counterparts.

That would suggest that not one star in the cast had it in their contract. Also It gives me pause and reason to wonder this. If these amenities were not justified, or required based on the omission in her contract, why did Oprah quickly "fix" it and fulfill her request? Why did she fee compelled to express her sincerity and that she had been unaware of the error, when she responded in the interview? So, Oprah just got busy sortting something out that did not need sorting, simply because austensibly it was not in the actor's contract. I'm not sure about that.

I'm observing so many layers to this saga. The racism of Hollywood that doesn't pay black actors the worth and respect they deserve. The lack of support and care by Black Hollywood for their own kind. The colourism on display of a lighter skinned and slender-build black actress getting unanimous support for saying the exact same thing that a dark skinned, big girl actress said years ago but was vilified for. The ongoing victimization of Monique after she has already paid the price for speaking her truth over the years. I really don't think Monique owes Oprah or Black Hollywood allegiance after what she's been through. She did her job as per her contract. She spoke out way after Precious was released back in 2009, way after she received her Oscar and way after the press junkets and events. She observed all that decorum. Instead of being taken seriously, she was blackballed and labeled as difficult for pointing out the same things Taraji's talking about. Nothing had changed. Monique has been vindicated and yet, we still want her to "be the better person" when none of the people speaking out now supported her? As for Taraji, she's already a victim of the system, and there's rarely a right or wrong way to speak your truth when you've been hurt by the people you didn't expect it from. We are also missing talking about how Gail stoked the situation by prodding both Taraji and Oprah with those inflamed questions. 2023/2024 is certainly looking like a period of revelation and it seems the chickens are all coming home to roost. Looks like we all have to hold on tight for what might be coming next😢

That’s sad. At least Taraji has people’s compassion, and being accommodated after she shared some of her concerns and experiences. Ever since I moved to this new State because of the pandemic, I’ve been crying and struggling to survive with my 9 to 5, working so hard, not getting paid what I’m worth. Not making enough to pay my bills. The cost of living is high, and the bills still need to get paid, and I still have to survive, eat, and live. I tried to do photography, but no one wants to pay. They want free photoshoots. It’s not easy out here, especially when you’re on your own, single, in a new State.

This is a tricky one imo, dear Queen Fumi…I agree about the issue of ‘our enemies observing’ the ‘in fighting’, however in terms of Mo'Nique’s delivery of an important message, I wonder if it would’ve been accepted, however she delivered it. I love ❤️ that you’re a realist in so many ways, yet..the term ‘code switching’ comes to mind on this…not to mention that this is a criticism so often levied against Black women and our people in general when fighting for our rights and for our voices to be heard, “if only you were nicer about it.” “If only you were more professional.” Ultimately (maybe this is controversial) I believe (as far as possible) we should tell the unvarnished truth - even if it’s messy. I don’t think we have to always be perfect (I know you didn’t mean it like that🙏🏾)…I hope by Grace, in future, we’re given our due without always having to fight for it. We deserve all the good things too as you intimated. We are worthy. However we show up. Thank you for all you do. 💐💐✨❤️

I'm so glad, Fumi, that you comment on this. You said something I felt. At first her words came off as complaining but I had to reason on the issues the cast were facing, especially that some people were a little older. Having food is important so you don't starve, but some also may be on different meds that require not to take on an empty stomach or some may suffer with low blood sugar, etc. Where they are filming may not be near food restaurants so they are dependent on the producers or whomever is responsible for their food. At first I thought about why is she upset about driving herself. I had to realize she's famous. We've heard stories how some of the public can treat famous people. I remember Paula Abdul stalker committed suicide at her house. So Taraji was probably nervous. We know she was uncomfortable because she's talking about it. Her issues are valid. I think that these comments has caused the movie to suffer some. I too was extremely excited, but after her comments, I'm not so much. As you said timing is the key. What should have been extremely successful in our community, isn't at all. I'm sure this affects everyone's pay somehow. Not just the cast, but everyone behind the scenes, like the writers, wardrobe, makeup team, film team, etc.. I wish she had of waited even two months then spill the beans. Because Oprah did resolve the issues. Once she aired her grievances, then don't work with warner brothers again. What I hate is Monique didn't help either. Her words fanned the flames. Like you said Fumi, this is done in front of people who don't necessarily champion for us. It looks like a house divided. It seems to be our downfall and we can't seem to get past this behavior. This doesn't mean other cultures don't fight amongst themselves, but it's done behind closed doors. And they come together for their causes publicly. I know she's only human like the rest of us. I hope she will be able to find better pay for her job. She's absolutely talented and so is all of the cast. On a side note, if Monique is dissatisfied with the way business is run for actors in Hollywood, then she could start her own business. Supply what is needed for actors and actresses. Fill in the missing pieces because you can relate to their needs. You won't see them as just a number. You can help them progress. That's what I want for Monique and her followers would be gladly be supportive. Me also. But blaming Oprah every time is not solving anything nor helping anyone either.

I think you should remember that Monique actually wanted to talk to Oprah and she refused. I think your criticism of Monique is unjustified. She is very articulate and respected for her decision to not be bullied by Hollywood. Unfortunately Black women in this country are viewed as angry when they don’t weep, cry or act subservient over injustices. Please be mindful that we all have different personalities. Choosing not to beg for what you deserve should not be frowned upon. Keep these issues “private “ is just one of the reasons this treatment has been prevalent in our community for so long. The same attitudes exist in every day lives in the Black community. Full disclosure leads to accountability no matter how one chooses to express themselves.

My first thought when I heard the complaint was what sort of contract did they sign? And what role did their agent play in helping them all. At best the overheads for all these activities are phenomenal. When people come to me and complain about their salaries I ask them what was in the contract and what did they sign to. In the corporate environment when you complain about money, be prepared to walk. They all should have complained in private. I consider them all fortunate because there are people out there who would have loved the opportunity to be part of the performance. What does it profit a man to gain (opportunity to be part of the show) and lose his soul (what is the motive for complaining publicly) ? Is it to destroy another person’s credibility or Is it an opportunity to get more coins in your next contract? I sincerely pray they all find peace and contentment, it is not easy for everyone. I hope they all find true worth and happiness from within ❤ Thank you FUMI and a Happy New Year to you and your family. I subscribed to your channel because my Mum went to Holy Child College

We are always told to do things behind closed doors, choose the right way of talking etc.. And those points are valid and true. However, when someone does not take into consideration what you are going through, after doing all of those said things, there is always going to be a pushback. Very likely. Also, very probable that the contract, at least Taraji's, was/were NOT being honored because this cast did not have the complexion for protection. Likely they did try to address it and had to call in Oprah. I have had items in my contract and had to FIGHT to have them honored while I watched my peers, mostly non-Black fighting for nothing and getting everything plus. When it came time, I pulled out the receipts diplomatically. My peers were "stunned" by my experience and productivity given the minimal support that I had received. I had been swimming like a duck, but trust me, I was exhausted. Taraji had enough of business as usual.

She has been in the business long enough to know that negotiations, complaints, etc. are done behind closed doors with agents and attorneys, not during press tours. She will more than likely have to take a seat for a while, she is very talented, so this is unfortunate. .While we shouldn't air our dirty laundry, the "Go along to get along, that is just the way it is..." behind closed doors ADVICE from same racial identity peers or seniors in your field is TERRIBLE. Taraj was tired of heeding that advice. I work in a different profession but with a similar experience of different standards for Black women and "sage" advice to be quiet, put your head down, and work hard or harder, that can and often diminishes your professional advancement and well-being. Taraj was tired and took the risk to speak out. How about we change the narrative and speak out about where we would like to see her next vs. "She'll never work again." As a veteran on the set, she took a risk the younger stars were unwilling to do because of the "sage" advice in those "Hollywood Streets". Pause and think about it. Something had to give and people need to stand up. Further, from what I have read and heard from interviews, she stays clear of the casting couch that Fumi has discussed numerous times on this show. This is another reason why she is likely paid less than her quality of acting. I am 100% positive that what she shared is the iceberg. Close rank and support her, by doing so we support others who look like her and deserve their worth.

Dave Chapelle did the same and got the rights of his show back and was paid accordingly. Denzel had to check some Jewish producers on a very racist script. See, Taraji was gentle, people felt bad for her but still didn't get what she wanted, because she did not take a clear stand, she still takes the low pay checks, she got empathy but now she is blackballed, the movie flopped. I think it would have been more strategic for Taraji to wait until the movie did is thing, however I think it was an organic moment, it had to be difficult to go through the whole process of making the film, while your heart is broken for being so disrespected and demeaned, we needed to know this, it happens in all types of work scenarios, the micro racism is violent to your soul and your sense of being. My only concern is that we will not see how much the movie could profit and how much it does "translated" overseas, so she could make an argument with those points, my concern is that she is now going to be labeled as problematic and that it translates to the box office. Good people have to learn to play the game when you are dancing with the devil.

    • @alikazan24
      @alikazan24 7 місяців тому +1

Taraji talking about quitting is moot. No one will hire her after she intentionally destroyed the promotion and earning potential for the film. I do wonder if her ill timed angst has something to do with the fact that there was Golden Globe Award buzz around Fantasia and the amazing support Davonne, not Taraji? After all she knew what her Agent negotiated when she accepted the role. Her timing stinks!!!

    • @RorieBrito
      @RorieBrito 7 місяців тому +2

@@alikazan24🙄🤫what you’ve suggested definitely crossed my mind. Taraji has been around long enough to know the game. Her agent would have negotiated her contract for the number of minutes she appears on screen (if you’re on screen for at least 20 minutes, then your eligible for Oscar or award contention, at least that’s what I recall) and would have had in her “rider” the trailer, transportation and door requirements (vegetarian etc).
The Oscar and Golden Globe buzz around Fantasia and the other actresses must have stung Taraji who has been around a long time and these up and coming actresses were having their moment. I admit I did think of this. Sadly, timing was all off. Sell and promote your product. Believe in it so that others will believe and buy it. Support the team of coworkers with whom you may work again down the line.
Crabs in a barrel. I hate to admit that. At least two were climbing to the top and now….
Time and opportunity. Get the film to succeed as best it could. It was your labor and ultimate work product. Make it profitable.
Then after Christmas and after the box office comes in from overseas, two months maybe, then go sit with Gail. Share your truth. Or find a platform where you could have said: “I’m very proud f all the hard work my sisters and I put into making this film. Honored that we were handpicked. Grateful for the opportunity and thrilled my fellow sisters are being nominated for their talents. And grateful to all our fans who went to see the film in theaters not on e but twice or more. We were very successful at the box office.” “ now, I need to share the harsh devastier realities of behind the scenes and what’s really happening to some if not most black actresses in terms of equal pay and treatment.”
Now I understand Vivica’s “shady comment.” She worked on Empire with Taraji. She knows her. She knows the business. Yeah, could she have said things differently? Sure. But it’s a world of illusion. People are competitive and jealous of each other when they sense there isn’t enough to go round, or only one spot and then the colorism issue. It happens in our places of work too.
Can’t help but feel this complaining tanked the film, but may also have done the opposite and may now affect Taraji’s career. Sad. 😮😢
      Timing is everything. 🙁

Fumi i love the organza. i agree with what you say . i wish we could sole our disputes privately . i tried not to be bothered by what our enemies say but i was very annoyed, when i saw a headline they are now fighting for more money for picking cotton.
Fumi you are positive and i love your energy. xx

Black women have always been silenced since the beginning of time. We have always been thrown the crumbs and expected to accept and appreciate it without complaining. Its very tiring, draining and exausting. Immediately you speak up, you are dabbed "the angry black woman". I understand Taraji`s frustration and outcry. And I also understand sista Fumi`s delivery. Black women are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Auntie Fumi, black women have always been expected to swallow B.s and exercise decorum in everything. We are always taught to be quiet and demure and just accept stuff. I get the timing was wrong for this issue to come out, BUT these are A-list actors, at least Taraji is; there is no way shape or form that this is acceptable in any way. They could have come up with this after the tour, yes, but it’s always the case, and it wouldn’t have had as much traffic as it is now; however, Taraji couldn’t take it anymore because she always goes through it, unlike Fantasia who is a singer (you can’t compare) and the other cast.

Hello Lady Fumi, I have been enjoying your content for some time now, but have decided to take the plunge after seeing how you supported your Friend Christina, celebrated her success and was genuinely happy for her. You have my respect. You have made several very poignant statements in this post that I felt you were whispering a message just for me. Thank you so much. Your Canadian Sister🇨🇦🌹
