I wanted to update that the front sight is not bent like I thought. Rather, the threaded barrel wasn't all that tight so it canted over to the right. Very easy fix to simply turn it tight or use thread locker.
I must admit that most of my practice is one handed (both left and right) and I am in the habit of using my grip hand to cock on single action when shooting a two handed grip. I most certainly will practice your technique. Thanks for sharing.
Great info man I just got the 3 inch barkeep another quick tip on the cylinder reloads is pull the pin out enough to clear and put new cylinder without having to take it completely out click rod in Hamer cocked bang great video man love from Fort Bliss TX your pretty dam fast with a sa sir much respect
When he was out walking his orchard or working the property dad often carried a Ruger Bearcat in his coveralls. He's been gone for more than a couple of decades but his arms were .22s and a single shot 12 gauge. Long gone now but they served him well.
The fact of the matter is, I would not want to be out in front of a .22 Magnum round...let alone 6 of them....neat little pistol...KEEP ON ROCKING IT!...Gun Sam_Revolver Aficianado_........
I bought one of these Barkeeps several months ago for a pretty low price. I bought the 22 mag cylinder too. It's a fun revolver and inexpensive to shoot. I wasn't hitting from the distance you tried. Instead I kept my target shooting in more of an up close and personal range. I figure it's good for plinking at the range but especially with 22 mag it could be an effective anti carjacking gun too.
Ok before anyone's hair catches on fire, I'm speaking for myself and relating to my personal situation. I have 3 Heritage revolvers and I plan to add more in the future. A 2" Barkeep and 2 16"ers. One a pistol and one Rancher carbine. I consider all three of them to be range toys and not serious contenders for defensive use. I have 2 friends who each only have a single gun for defending their homes. One of them has a HiPoint 45 pistol and the other has a 6.5" Heritage Rough Rider. Neither weapon would be my first or even fifty first choice, but I am completely convinced that either is a better choice for defending their homes than a tennis racquet or a golf club. I also have 3 Ruger singlesix convertibles, several classic High Standard and H&R 22LR revolvers and several 22LR auto pistols. Of all my 22 handguns the only one I would consider remotely suitable for defensive use would be my Taurus Tracker convertible with the 22WMR cylinder installed. Fortunately like Sam I have other better suited firearms in my collection so I am not forced to use a 22LR. What do I keep ready to repell unwanted guests? A Maverick 88 security, a Canik TP9DA, a S&W M&P 40 S&W, a 5.56 AR pistol and an S&W M&P 15. All are ready and available and in my opinion adequate for defensive use inside my home. There is nothing outside my home worth dying for so there is nothing outside my home worth using deadly force to defend. I personally would not recommend a new shooter get a 22LR for defense if that was going to be their only weapon. My recommendation is always a 4 or 6 inch 357 magnum revolver, that I recommend they learn to shoot with 38s and when they are ready they can move up to magnums. I never recommend automatics for new inexperienced shooters. I belive DA revolvers are simpler and safer for learning the skills they will need to effectively deploy their handgun. Your results and opinions may differ.
These damn guns are fun. They are not a match grade Olympic competition 22. They are just fun. Shooting is not all about knock down power and inches of penetration. You shoot a Heritage Arms revolver and you can't help but grin like a child and chuckle. I personally own Wild Bill Hickock' s Heritage Arms 22... Swear to gaud. It says so on the Box !😂😂😂😂😂😂 Folks get bent out of shape criticizing these guns. They need to calm down and just enjoy them. They really are toys.
The Barkeep wouldn't be our 1st choice for carry or HD, but it is a gun and fulfills rule #1, especially in .22wmr...we are not adverse to getting another Heritage (we happy with the one we own), but there are other firearms higher on the wishlist...and honestly, the birdshead more appealing to us...good video...
Yep lcr 22lr and lcpii 22lr are often my carry. My lcpii 22lr with tandemkross wingman plus 4 mag base and desantis slim tuk holster has become a constant companion.
The birds head I saw but they got the weird barrel. I did find out that taking off the barrel is super easy, so you could probably put the 2.68" barrel on the birds head frame lol
Those heritages are pretty good pistols For their price 22 magnum Federal makes a 50 grain that's what I was shooting they seem to work better out of handguns
I love my 6 inch Roughrider. Both 22 and 22 mag hit point of aim after filing down the front sight a little. I have been interested in the Barkeep since it came out. I like the swapping cylinders idea. Clever to use Vasoline to keep the rounds stuck in the cylinder.
I have wanted these type of guns for like 20 years, once I started getting into guns I forgot about them. It's like being 22 again lol. No pun, I was 22 that long ago lol
I have a barkeep that I carry around my property. If you practice you can disengage the safety and pull the hammer back into firing position in one smooth motion.
Back when I did more farm work with animal feed around , my #1 likely shot was a rat or mouse . Revolvers are GREAT for shot shells , as they won't cycle an auto . My farm load was 2 shot shell , 2 SWC & 2 JHPs ( 38 or 44 ) in that order of likely use . For your gun I would load 2 shot shells , 2 mini mags & the rest velocitors ... just in case !
You didn't do the chronograph I was waiting to see what the 2.68 barrel would do. Buffalo Outdoors (both Ruger LCR revolvers) got about 1090 fps with a 3 inch 22Lr 36 grain (Minimag) and about 1260 fps with a 3 inch 22WMR 40 grain (maximag) and Paul Harrell shot his North American Arms pistols and his 22Lr with a 1 inch barrel was FASTER than the 22WMR with a 1 inch barrel. Both 40 grain bullets also -- surprised me! I'm guessing at least 2 inches of barrel are needed in the WMR since yours did a complete pass thru!
All things considered, this revolver is a useful and purposeful regardless of a specific scenario. For a ultralight hiker, climber to someone recoil shy of larger calibers. Very good objective review on your part.
Not to criticize, but I was always taught not to dry fire a .22 rimfire...because the firing pin hits on the rim of the cartridge...no cartridge, the firing pin hits on face of chamber, causing damage to face or firing pin. I know, because an antique rifle I had was dry fired accidentally and it broke the firing pin in two...was very costly because rarity of parts.
I wouldn't mind having one of those, they look like a lot of fun to plink around with BUT I have to get the tx22 first (is next on my wishlist). Those are quite a bit cheaper price though than tx22 even with magnum cylinder. A couple of years ago that is about all you could find around here and I have seen them on sale for like $85 back then! I should have got a few of them back then! lol! Happy Friday have a good weekend
I have a very similar setup, Barkeeper and Rough Rider, but the RR has adjustable sights. The "extra" 22 wmr cylinder that came with the RR can be used with both. I hated the safety until I realized it can be used to dry fire. The kids dry fire a lot, which has really improved their shooting. Soon they will be ready for their own Blackhawks.
Nice video. I recently bought my second Heritage gun, the 2” Barkeep. My other is the 6” RR. My barkeep fortunately, has a straight sight. My 6” RR had a slightly bent sight. I sent it back to Heritage while still under warranty and they corrected it.
Had my front sight move 45 degrees, realized the barrel was unscrewing. I just tightened it and went on. With something like $140 I don't sweat it and laugh it off, add some loctite. Now if my S&W 686 barrel did that i'd be really mad.
I have one also. It’s a fun little gun. I think there are many wiser options for concealed carry but if it was all I had I guess it’d work better than nothing.
Nice video!!! Just FYI I’ve been able to pull most my spent cartridges out of my bar keep with a fingernail. I haven’t got a mag cylinder yet but plan to!! Thanks for the video!
Thank you for sharing this video. I own 2 of the rough riders. Get them on sale for $99bucks and last one came with a 22mg cylinder. Next I want to purchase the barkeep. Great little guns for the money
I just got a bar keep 2 inch barrel so a snub nose and I love it it's grouping is good for snub nose and I'm about to get the 22 Magnum cylinder yeppie!
I own several Heritage revolvers but I don't own the Barkeep revolver but maybe one day soon I will own one. Thank you for doing a good review on the Barkeep.
I really like NAAs and they are single-action. But given how big these Heritage guns are, I am not sure if it would fit the niche of viable single-action defense guns. With that said, I had an elderly neighbor who kept an old 4 3/4 inch model loaded with Stingers. Saw her pop a coyote on the run from under the carport. Might be slower but that first shot is probably going to hit something important.
I think the niche market is the person who somehow acquires one who didn't really have another option. Like they have no money, someone gives them one or they got it on a trade or however they got one. For very little money they have something rather than nothing. I think a lot of people have them for plinking guns who aren't really gun people and who see semi auto pistols as evil or whatever. Here in rural MI there's a lot of people like this, they own rifles and shotguns for hunting but think handguns are useless, but if there's a sporting handgun like a Heritage, they will own one. These are the fuds that spend 3 grand on a rifle and scope and don't want to spend money on a handgun that is 'good for nothing'. lol
A great gun review, I have 2 HERITAGE rough raider models one is their 5.75 inch barrel and the Bar keep with the 2 Inch barrel. Love shooting both, they are fun and ammo is cheaper lol. Would like to get their HERITAGE rough raider RIFLE next, thanks for a very informative video.
Awesome GSam《☆》Nice review Brother👍🔥I anything that is labled Magnum has a certain appeal😁🍺🍕I guess the LRs & Shorts have their purpose as well. I bought some frangible 22 shorts for Varmints but haven't had any Varmints since the new porch Cat showed up🖖😎☮
I like the Heritage although I didn't know why they couldn't get 8 rounds in the gun? As for the single action- it was good enough for John Wayne and Matt Dillion.
One of the things I found was when you're caulking it in your caulking it deep in your thumb closer to where the thumbs turning into the hand you can flip the safety switch down before you actually pull the hammer down. This helps with the technique for speed draw / firing from the holster.
Sorry can't help it! Caulking is something to seal windows and such -- pulling the hammer back, getting ready to fire is (cocking the hammer). Sorry but I just like members of the "shooting community" to use the correct words since the antigunners say enough things incorrectly. Nothing personal!!!
great vid sam....i have two with 6.5 inch barrel and use them for cowboy action at my club....that is the way i shoot them, using my left thumb to cock them, faster times ....love them, so much fun with single action 22....and cheap also$$$
I liked the look of this gun when I first saw it. The more I learn about it though the less I like it. I think I'll go with the 21A Bobcat, but thanks for a GREAT review!
Thanks. Good and interesting video. I never thought of the Barkeep with .22 Mags, seems like it would not be all that bad. AND almost everybody owns a Rough Rider. Take care.
Thanks. I honestly could not tell a difference between the magnums and LR's for recoil. Ran a few different defensive rounds through it in LR, somewhere around 70 ft lbs, the magnum is more like 90-100 ft lbs. Not a huge increase but probably enough to matter on such a small diameter.
@@GunSam Thanks for the additional information. I just shot 10-different .22 LR rounds into gallons of water (with a rifle). .22 Short thru Stinger and I was somewhat amazed at the energy dump of the various rounds. The fast rounds were good, but not necessarily always the best. The Barkeep with .22 Mags is very interesting and likely viable for self-defense. Thanks for all that you do.
I bought a heritage rough rider a few weeks ago. Shot 2 rounds and the action went out of time. Messed with the hammer a few minutes and was able to shoot the rest of the cylinder. Then it went back to the gunstore.
I have considered a rough rider as a CCW. My thought is that the 3.5 inch barrel version semi captures the cylinder pin in place against the ejector rod (?). Swapping cylinders should be a lot easier because you don't have to mess with inserting the pin, just push it back in. The rest of my plan would be to switch out the hammer and cylinders (and another piece?) for the 9 shot version. 27 rounds (two reloads) of 22 Mag is not to be sneezed at! And that vaseline is a great idea...{!-{>
Don't carry with it fully loaded. It is not drop safe and if you hit the hammer with something it can go off. Load 1, skip 1, load 4 to be on an empty cylinder.
A rim fire cartridge itself being unreliable takes it out of the ccw category. That's my opinion. I could not trust my life are my loves ones to this platform. Great review of the barkeep.
I have wanted to for some time, but finding a .25 auto cheaply is no easy task, and I don't want to spend a lot of money on a pistol that only has a couple defensive options to test.
@@GunSam On the way back from the range today, my oldest son and I stopped off at Academy to check out some ammo. Went to the gun counter and lo and behold, they had a Barkeep. Veteran's discount (my son's) and I was out the door with my new, "pearl" handled Barkeep! Can't wait to get back to the range with the thing!
Just FYI you can now buy an ejector for that with a metal handle on it instead of that injection molded plastic one on Ebay right now for $25. Probably the cheapest looking thing on that rig IMHO.
Harold Chase, that is a total myth propagated by Hollywood. There is very little historical evidence that anyone did it and none that it was common. A second gun was far more likely for a hired gun but way too expensive for the common cowboy. If you closely examined the Preacher's rig in Pale Rider you would realize that it is a total fantasy gun much like the Star Wars blasters. They resemble an existing gun but the details are all wrong for a period piece.. I have often wondered how many takes were required in order to get that cylinder changing sequence on film. The changing of a cylinder on '58 Remmy is a bit fidley at a bench but to do it without looking while walking would be quite a feat of dexterity. Lol
I've got the Rough Rider carbine. I thumb the hammer like that without un-shouldering the gun. I'm actually faster with it than I am a semi auto pistol
I really cannot tell you if any of that can be done, as I don't do those type of things. Now I do know most double action revolvers can be fitted with a laser grip, but I doubt they come in the Heritage single action revolvers.
Fun little gun and all, wouldn't mind having it just to have another .22, but for less than $200 you can buy a brand new Ruger ec9s in the box just my 2 cents on it for carry
Maybe. When I looked them up they averaged about $270. Hipoint is closer in price and could be argued as better. All debatable as there's a good possibility of a limp wrist turning the LC9 into a one shooter, as where an unexperienced person still has six .22 mags with this revolver.
@@GunSam that's very very true coz nobody expects the Ruger's horrendously tight spring right out of box, gets even worse with wimpy ammo if you had a death grip on it been there done that figured it out the hard way with mine. But the part of the country I'm in they're (the EC) going about $149-$179 new in the box has a few improvements over the LC9 and 1 or 2 "downgrades" depending how you see the glass.. half full half empty or it's all piss anyway 😁 (sidenote that's by 1 biggest complaint about the Ruger, its unnecessarily hard spring. Like ignorantly can barely even pull the slide kind of hard there was no logical need for that other than to commit safety theater)
It really makes one wonder why people go with old fashioned autos when revolvers are moving forward in technology. And heck, if you want real capacity and firepower, just do like Clint Eastwood did in The Outlaw Jose Wales and carry six Colt Walkers.
Uh... Folks... It is NOT advisable to swap cylinders between different guns, even IF from the same Mfr. The cylinder chambers may NOT index the same OR even align well with the barrel. Stay SAFE! Jerry
The Heritage cylinders with exception of the 9 shot, are known and have been known for a long time to be swappable, this is why they sell dozens of varieties of cylinders, as they intend you swap and go. They have been known for a LONG time that they do NOT require hand fitting. Stay safe people but don't listen to this guy ^

... for Self-Defense? Really? How often are you going to get in a gunfight with Clint Eastwood? He's kind of old; I don't think he gets out much any more.
It’s ok, nothing to be ashamed of, needing more capacity and gimmicks to be able to effectively defend yourself. the fact you admit it (albeit in a rather odd and roundabout way) shows courage. Keep practicing, you’ll improve someday!
I wanted to update that the front sight is not bent like I thought. Rather, the threaded barrel wasn't all that tight so it canted over to the right. Very easy fix to simply turn it tight or use thread locker.
I had the same problem with mine. I tightened the barrel and it definitely made a difference in accuracy
I must admit that most of my practice is one handed (both left and right) and I am in the habit of using my grip hand to cock on single action when shooting a two handed grip. I most certainly will practice your technique. Thanks for sharing.

Cool little snub nose. Pale Rider was a pretty awesome movie and the reason why I got into the Remington 1858
I like that movie, I just couldn't remember which was which. If that's the one from the 1980's I like it more than a lot of his older ones.

Ask Bob Munden how slow is single action.....

Pale Rider Reload. Here is another tip. Get a couple of HKS 6 shot 22 speed loaders, knock out empties and reload spare cylinders quickly

7-8 rounds of .22mag in that revolver would be sweet! With practice, it would be a very good CC with short barrel defensive ammo.

Good video. Nice little kit gun. The short barrel should handle the shot shells with a tight pattern.
great vid sam....i have two with 6.5 inch barrel and use them for cowboy action at my club....that is the way i shoot them, using my left thumb to cock them, faster times ....love them, so much fun with single action 22....and cheap also$$$
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing.this very informative video.
Great content. Great information..
I just now heard that smith n Wesson came out with an x frame in 350 legend. Let’s put that on the wish list. Lol
Interesting little piece, but for a $100 or so more you can get a 942m from Taurus and have an 8 shot SA/DA .22 wmr.
Yeah ---- if you can find one ----- I used to have a 605 --- want one again but can't find any of them either!😭😭
@@BB-1990 or use the safety
@@Scrap_Goblin I have one of those guns, the safety is not reliable buddy.
Go ahead and risk it.
@@BB-1990 unless the detent is wore out and it deactivates itself there's physically no way for the hammer to touch the firing pin
👍
22lr and 22wmr don't have the same diameter bullet. I'd like to know what size your barrel is.
You can use the cylinder pin to eject the rounds.ask me how I know .lol
I should have known that or at least thought of it lol
Slow speed Hi Drag lol...I did vids on the 9shot Diamondback Sidekick when I had it for review 1st w .22mag and 2nd w various .22lr maybe of interest
Better than a sharp stick
The insane thing is that they don't offer the 9 shot in the short barrel models!
👍👍
Fan that baby, thats a angry beehive. That was good.
A rim fire cartridge itself being unreliable takes it out of the ccw category. That's my opinion. I could not trust my life are my loves ones to this platform. Great review of the barkeep.
My rider, larger one, shoots wide left with the magnums, also, for some reason. 4 different brands of ammo, same thing
I got a pietta ace snub nose it just like this but it a 45 colt big bullet it my carry gun
Think about this. 1 or 2 9 shot 22 mag Bar Keeps for personal protection?
You shouldn't dryfire it
awesome revolver man, do a gel test with 25 auto
I have wanted to for some time, but finding a .25 auto cheaply is no easy task, and I don't want to spend a lot of money on a pistol that only has a couple defensive options to test.
@@GunSam it would be cool if u could!!
And I thought I had bought my last gun. For the price, how can you go wrong?
I know. If it breaks, work on it for a project. Not worth worrying about, but they are pretty simple designs so I don't even see that happening.
Vaseline? For retention?
Just FYI you can now buy an ejector for that with a metal handle on it instead of that injection molded plastic one on Ebay right now for $25. Probably the cheapest looking thing on that rig IMHO.
Fastest reload is a 2nd gun. With Heritage you can afford 2
I know I like to say buy S&W or Ruger they are very Good & Cool but the price is high I think the Ruger 22s cost less than the S&W 22s
Got one my self can easily hit a nail at 75 ft . Darn fine gun. As for the Cylinder swap that was standard practice in the old west .
Lol
👍😃✌️🇺🇸
I've got the Rough Rider carbine. I thumb the hammer like that without un-shouldering the gun. I'm actually faster with it than I am a semi auto pistol
The price of gold is so low ... might try some Golden Bullets
ua-cam.com/video/zMoGFlLTCxI/v-deo.html haha
I'm planning on buying this gun (3in. barrel) can a red dot laser sight be added to this weapon?
I really cannot tell you if any of that can be done, as I don't do those type of things. Now I do know most double action revolvers can be fitted with a laser grip, but I doubt they come in the Heritage single action revolvers.
I bought a red dot laser for my barkeep. I googled it to find one it fits the rough rider too.
Just a touch of filing will make them hit with no problem.
Not my cup of tea. Looks like a fun gun. I prefer the lcr 22lr with Revision CV ammo pod speed loaders.
A safety is only necessary on a single action revolver if you are Alec Baldwin.
Uh...

No ejector, no thanks.
... for Self-Defense? Really? How often are you going to get in a gunfight with Clint Eastwood? He's kind of old; I don't think he gets out much any more.
Get off my lawn !!!
It’s ok, nothing to be ashamed of, needing more capacity and gimmicks to be able to effectively defend yourself. the fact you admit it (albeit in a rather odd and roundabout way) shows courage. Keep practicing, you’ll improve someday!
