  • A BRIEF HISTORY OF ELLAND ROAD THE HOME OF LEEDS UNITED WHERE THEY PLAYED THERE FIRST MATCH IN 1919.
Elland Road opened in 1897, however in the first years of its existence it was only used for rugby matches. In 1904 newly formed football club Leeds City moved into the ground, and in the following years the stadium got gradually expanded.
After in 1919 Leeds City got expelled from the Football League, the stadium was sold for a sum of £250 to newly formed Leeds United. Further renovations were made shortly after, but few changes were made in the decades following.
In 1956, a fire burned down the West Stand, and a new stand had to be built. With the successes of Leeds United in the 1960s and early 70s further renovations were made.
Elland Road achieved its record attendance in 1967 during an FA Cup match with Sunderland. A total of 57,892 supporters watched the game from the stands.
In the early 1990s, the club started a redevelopment program for the ground, which most notably included the rebuilding of the East Stand in 1993. At completion, the stand counted as the biggest cantilever stand in the world.
Elland Road was one of the playing venues of the Euro 1996 Championships, during which it hosted three group matches.
In the early 2000s, Leeds investigated a move to a brand new 55,000-stadium, however these plans were shelved after the club’s finances severely deteriorated. Only smaller renovations have been made to the stadium since.

Great ground, full of character unlike these new modern day soulless stadiums that are built.

Ah, I really enjoyed that. Adding the East Stand really finished off the move to a completely enclosed stadium, but sadly it meant farewell to the iconic diamonds in the sky.

I'm surprised they haven't redevoped the ground more. Not much could be done on the south side, but a huge new west stand could be built. The Revie stand and corners could be improved as well.
Leeds is the 3rd largest city in the UK and a one club city. They could fill a 50,000 seater ground, most games, no problem.

The problem is we couldn't since relegation, it's only recently we could justify a stadium as big as it is.

One thing I did notice about these pictures of leeds ground it doesn't give out the attendance of how many fans that turned up.

Leeds took safety at Elland Road very seriously after the fire to the 51-year-old West Stand burning it to the ground. Fortunately it was not during a game when it happened so no casualties. Another fire occurred two years later in the then new West Stand during a reserve game, but was quickly quelled & damage was minimal. Again without casualties. Leeds were also the visitors to Nottingham Forest when the City Ground's Main Stand went up in flames in 1968. All got out of there safely & Elland Rd, which had just started major development of the ground, bore that incident in mind & became safer still on completion in the mid-1970s. This included moving the pitch by 60ft & allowing a brand new bigger capacity South Stand (previous one was dubbed the "Scratching Shed") to be built.
After the developments was already a safe ground even before the Bradford football fire in 1985. It once successfully staged an FA Cup semi-final replay in 1980 & should have been chosen to stage much more FA Cup semi-final games. Elland Rd was a lot safer than Hillsborough on that basis if it had been chosen to stage the 1989 FA Cup semi-final replay between Liverpool & Nottm Forest (Liverpool wanted the game not to be played at Hillsborough, but to no avail) there would have been no tragedy. That & excellent motorway links to the ground would have made Elland Rd a perfect venue.

Hi, Like your Channel! However as an ardent Luton Town fan for some 55 Years I was astounded to see the still of "1950's A Cold Bert Trautmann of Man City". The picture implies that this photograph is at Elland Road!! It is in fact a photograph taken of Kenilworth Road from the Kenny End and shows the distinctive shape of the Main Stand at Luton Town! Perhaps you could edit this or perhaps go even further and include the Hatters Kenilworth Road Stadium in your Channel especially as we will be moving in the near future! COYH!!

It still remains that the photograph of Bert Trautmann was taken at Kenilworth Road the home of Luton Town and not as implied at Elland road the home of Leeds!

Bring back the lowfeilds and the terraces. I don't want a ground where every stand is like the west stand
