"Let's science the shit out of this!"
I don't typically comment on a video this old, but I have to say, this was one of my favorite books and movies.
I 100% agree that the tone of the movie is spot on. All of the humor is there, and the problem solving. Which brings me to my favorite part of the whole book/movie.
Nothing that happens feels artificially inflated for shock or drama. "Something terrible just happened", "okay, freak out over. How do we solve the problem?". It felt like everything had an appropriate response, very human with a bit of "oh, shit, I might die", but instead of stretching it out for the reaction, Watney did what any scientist in a similar situation would do. How can I fix this?
My only gripe with the whole book was that I felt like it was a bit convenient for him to be a botanist, but that's it. I didn't even mind a lot of the lack of characterization of the side characters because it was really supposed to be all about Watney.
Wow, that was long. But my thoughts on The Martian.
I loved The Martian, both the book and the movie.
I attended a panel with Andy Weir, subject: Suspending disbelief aka how far can you stray from science/reality an have you readers accept it. He was wonderful and i read The Martian that week. The movie came out 3 months later and loved that too.
I totally agree with your review. Although, as far as the science being exact; that holds true for everything except for the idea that high winds would be a problem for spaceships and antennas in the ultra-thin atmosphere of Mars. But without that huge exaggeration, we wouldn't have had such a great story, so I'll let that pass.

It looks good, when a dust storm forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, astronaut Mark Satney finds himself stranded on Mars surface. we have a dual effect here, Dennis Quad & Bruce Willis Armageddon. In fact, a little birdie told me this is a very good movie, rate it a 10 1/2..

i've read it for the 4th time and just finished it today. its still one of the funniest books i've read. Mark Wattney is a funny character. also the survival aspect was realy great. and i love science fiction and Mars is my favorite planet. its full of good stuff. the only thing thats kind of annoying, and its just nitpicky, i'm sorry, is the fact dat Wattney is telling us what he does and most of the time its like science stuff but realy hard to follow like mathematics. the mathematic in this is strong and sometimes over the top but mostly i forget about that and it is still an enjoyable read. fun fact, i started this book two days after SpaceX launched the astronauts into space for ISS. so it took me that long. so it was a quick read.
10/10 (despite that one little nitpick about mathematics and science stuff).
Humor in this book is also a 10. definelely one of the funniest books ever read; and it still is after the 4th time reading it.
Did you watch the movie beforehand? If so, did it take the edge off the book? :)

you can probably forgotten about this book and video, but anyway, I’m doing a school dissertation for English and I have chosen this specific book for it and the compare it to other books on humans will to survive, but im not really sure if this is a high enough standard of book to read, like is this book quality wise for 17-18 year old with near university (college for the USA) standards, if you do read this any information on the book would help, Thanks
The movie was a lot of fun, although I don't think it answered the question Why did NASA send astronauts to Mars in the first place? The simplest solution to Mark Watney's predicament would have been not to put Mark Watney on Mars in the first place. Send robot rovers instead. Maybe the book discusses the whole purpose of their mission on Mars.
The book didn't answer that question so its still a mystery after reading the book. i would've enjoyed the answers but it is what it is. still a very good book imo.
i think it's about further space exploration, to test the spaceships they had and how humans survive there. But it didn't mention a specific thing.
i loved the book, i eated it in 3 days, but I would have liked more description of his internal state and more environmental details. One point for it, is that the silly part of the astronaut was kinda on point, i read some funny apollo transmission and it was like reading the conversation in the book.
This book was painful to read imo. Couldn’t do it.

I don't enjoy sifi as much as fantasy. I normally ignore them because of the over done stuff that don't suit me. I think I may try with this book or arthemis.
I cannot praise them enough and they are both certainly not typical for the genre.
listening to this book right now its a bit boring.
To me this book was solid but not good. I loved Mark Wattney and the humour but the science and chemistry part bored me.
I wouldn't even call it Sci-fi. It was just a thriller to me, there was no depth to it, I remember 1 or 2 profound thoughts and that was it.
Love you dude, but "well respected people" or "Neil deGrasse Tyson" pick one. Anyway love your videos, keep it up!
I have also heard NYD can be a tool and not a very nice guy, but claiming he is not respected in the scientific community is a bit silly. I try to separate people from their work.
Daniel Greene I’m sure he’s respected well enough within his field, but the dudes problem is he doesn’t keep to his field, also gets way too political which is a big red flag in science.
