High School Musical is Disney Channel's magnum opus of their original film catalogue. Zac Efron, Ashely Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, Corben Bleu and the rest of this corny cast of steretypical high school characters sing, dance, and bop to the top. We're breaking free of our animation shackles and checking out this classic film on this reaction video
#highschoolmusical #reaction #movie
Fun Fact: Zac Efron doesn't actually sing in the first movie. It's actually drew seeley doing the vocals and they made Zac just lip sync to it.
You can tell. He doesn't lip sync very well and his mouth movements are way too exaggerated.
Is that why he's just listed as Troy on the soundtrack thing, since they can't exactly credit one guy over the other?
He sings one line as far as i remember.
The beginning couple lines in that "breaking free" song.
You know the part where they said he sounds awful
ITS TRUE he would only sing like a few bars then it would be drew seeley that would be a good one to review !! Another Cinderella story
Greatest Showman: 🧍♀️
Coach Bolton's delivery of "What the heck are those two doin' in a tree" is hilarious to me
“Conservative Dad Finds Son In Tree With Other Boy… You Won’t Believe What Happens Next!”
It’s so fucking good
Whoever made High School Musical was probably a homeschooled kid with strict parents who imagined school as a happy heaven.
not really. the themes of this film were things that were happening in highschool during the 80s. the stereotypes are derived from the 80s.
"Stay in your lane." was the mentality back then. Sadly, Social Media started to creep in on millennials and most of them didn't even have a proper highschool experience..... just one behind a screen making memes.
Kor wrote it?
@@bryana.escaleralopez This is why Mean Girls is a (almost)perfect satire of those tropes that came about in the 80s
Thank director Kenny Ortega for this film trilogy along with Netflix's 'Julie & the Phantoms' & Disney's 'Descendants' trilogy.
@@COSun25thank you Ortega... thank you... for your service to _humanity_
Did Sharpay actually do something... bad, in this movie? I feel like the so-called friends did much more damage to Troy and Gabriella in this movie.
From what I remember, she was just annoying
She is actually pretty decent overall but she’s annoying and just kinda gets screwed over by the end of the series
no, she was just that annoying drama geek that everyone dislikes and needed to be humbled. Thats all. Life is like that.
@@bryana.escaleralopez She was though and by the end of the series she was a much better person.
She's not that bad. Having the theater kid as the "bad guy" in a musical was a weird choice imo.
The students at East High are very weird, because they're pretty much content with Sharpay and Ryan playing love interests in Twinkle Towne... but they draw the line at playing the cello and baking during Stick to the Status Quo
that… is a very good and disturbing point
For Zeke, I put forth the notion that we replace “let him cook” with “let him bake.” In this 1,500 word essay, I-

@@i_ambob9904 let’s see how it looks so far!

As a little kid, the HSM trilogy influenced my view of what high school would actually be like. Obviously, my high school experience was NOTHING like that.
Same. Sonny with A Chance actually showed me how weird it actually is to start singing and dancing when everyone is eating.
same
its because the "status quo" stuff was literally a thing back in the 80s when script writers were in highschool. And the stereo types were derived from 80s stereo types.
@@bryana.escaleralopezI was wondering where some of the stupid things came from 😂
@@kameronjones7139 Yup. during those times it was all about picking a lane and staying there. The funny thing is that this film was made by a B-team group of writers with a small budget..... Heck, some of the locations of the films were actually the houses of actual Disney execs to reduce film cost and this film series ended up being the most successful dcoms to ever be made. LMAO
This movie is such a nostalgia ride. Zac Efron's amazing in this, Sharpay is one of the few meangirl characters I actually like, and I can't tell you how many times "Status Quo" has gotten stuck in my head. I even sang it in a stage version in high school.
That's my favorite too.
In hindsight, its hard to feel sympathetic for the main characters when they're *all* kind of arseholes
Ironically Sharpay, despite being the "villain" , is the only one who feels even remotely believable as not only does she actually have a bit of an arc as these movies go along but is genuinely invested in what's best for the theatre club instead of all the melodrama like the others
Life isn’t full of antagonist. Just people wanting different things and that brings conflict
Well, she didn’t want what was best for the theatre club, she wanted what was best for herself and Ryan. If she really prioritized the club, she wouldn’t be acting like a dictator toward everyone else in the club. Look at how she treated Kelsey and the other kids during lunch.
Things I am upset about:
* HSM2 throwing away Sharpay and Zeke's relationship
* They trying to convince us that whatever Troy and Gabriella did was better than Bop to the top
REAL LIKE IM SORRY BREAKING FREE WAS NOT AS GOOD AS THAT CULTURAL PHENOMENON
3:36- Eden just described the existential conundrum I had with literally just about EVERY musical growing up. 😂
So basically, musical theatre songs come in two flavors: diagetic and nondiagetic. Diagetic songs occur within the world of the story that is happening and are heard by the other characters. These songs are often framed as performances within the narrative. Nondiagetic songs are more common and happen outside the world of the story. They exist as a window for the audience to understand what’s happening inside the characters’ heads that drives the plot forward. These require some suspense of disbelief, understanding that what we are seeing is metaphorical and not actually happening in the story. Both types can exist in the same show, and many musicals contain both types of songs. One’s not really better than the other, and both can give insight into how a character is feeling and how they are being motivated.
Interesting, thanks for educating me with this detailed answer. Yeah, I was never much of a theatre kid myself and enjoyed few musicals growing up. Grease was the first I genuinely liked, but it was more the songs than the plot.
Newsies (specifically, the Christian Bale film adaptation) would be the second. It comes down to whether or not the overall experience resonates with me, and I grew up finding most of them simply too over-the-top.
As a kid, they often struck me as over-dramatic or over-performed at best and outright goofy or cringey at worst. Even the big names (Fame, Les Miserables, Macbeth, etc.) just weren't for me outside of a couple songs.
I was never into High School Musical, was bored for most of Hairspray, was weirded out by Cats (long before the movie), and still haven't watched La La Land. Animated musicals like Disney's were usually easier for me to get into.
Even then, I was mostly a 90's Disney kid. I can't articulate exactly why, perhaps I just think the over-the-top nature of musicals suits cartoons better because it looks less weird to me than watching real people sing & dance?
As an adult, however, while I'm still not an avid musical lover, I do appreciate them far more. I saw my first stage play a couple years ago (Wicked), and it was beautiful. And yes, "Because I knew You" made me cry.
It amazes me how nobody's made a full animated cinematic adaptation of that play yet, because it would make bank at the Box Office if well-executed and could be a perfect companion piece to The Wizard of Oz.
One surprising aspect was how, in my opinion, Elsa's character in Frozen seems in retrospect as if Disney took noticeable influence from Elphaba when writing her ("Defying Gravity" basically felt like "Let It Go")@@giselle9230
Funny story: I actually watched High School Musical 2 before watching the first one, and then I never watched the third one
HSM1: rough around the egdes
HSM2: Peak
HSM3: literal cash grab
I’ve tried watching HSM3 several times and I kept getting bored and shutting it off
You gotta start with the visual novel first
hsm 3 is amazing, scream is the best hsm song by FAR
I was born in late 94. HSM came out when I was about 11. I loved it. It was my entry into musical theatre. A true way to express myself.
I grew up in Mississippi with a very conservative family. My dad automatically assumed I'd be into sports. I wasnt. When i got into high school, i realized i loved plays and theatre. My dad, rather than be the stereotypical fantasy forbidding father, became a borderline stage dad. Pushed me to audition and be the best I could be. Even if it wasn't sports, he was gonna root for his son in his chosen activity.
Looking back, High School Musical WAS stupid and cheesy. But so was I. And it was heartfelt. Something genuine about it. I'll always adore the movie for what it meant to me then
To be quite honest this helped cultivate a lifelong love of singing when I was a 10 year old seeing this premiere.
Oh, and as for the singing. Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay) sang for Gabriella, lip synced, and Drew Seeley sang for Troy. Drew Seeley is the guy from Starstruck. My investigations have revealed interesting details about the 2 of you. I've done my best to keep your secrets hidden. Don't worry, you know I'm the guy.
Drew isn't from Starstruck, that's another actor. He's from Another Cinderella Story staring him and Selena.
@@icybird9999 Oh, that's right, Starstruck is Sterling Knight.
This is half true. Vanessa Hudgens sang for Gabriella. Ashley Tisdale’s tone is VERY different. If you listen closely, it’s mostly the lower notes that are dubbed over by a secondary voice. All of Troy’s singing in the first film are the only ones confirmed not sung by the actor playing them. You can just reference their concert tour for proof. Vanessa sang her lines and they brought Drew to sing Troy’s.
@@DatVideoDoe
But were they dubbed by Ashley or someone else?
And why only specific notes?
@@japbstudios nope. None of Vanessa’s parts were ever dubbed over by Ashley. They likely dubbed over those low notes because Vanessa probably couldn’t hit those low notes that well. Her voice is rather light and thin.
I went to private schools and I can confirm you will get detention for the wrong colour socks, the badges not being on the proper spot on the collar and vests, not wearing the vest outside of school, wearing the sport uniform out of school, wrong colour shoes…. I thought this was normal.
This movie is pure nostalgia but oddly enough I don't and won't remember the plot even from this amazing reaction! 😂 The music is 🔥 🔥 🔥 but the script is so average, is insane!
Yea
The story can be a little cringe. But it is iconic and the songs are great.
Did you know Disney forced Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens to date just so they could promote this movie?
Dang that sucks for them lol
Ok
Huh? Forced them date? How?
@@ViltrumiteIsRite99Forgot what Google was huh?
Oh.
Something people also forget is the age of the actors in this movie. While most of them were around the same age, Corbin was a minor and the actress that played Taylor, Monique, was 8 years older than him. Their characters legally couldn’t do anything like kiss until he got older IRL. That’s why they don’t kiss until like the 3rd movie.
I still can’t believe Sharpay is played by the same person who voices Candace from Phineas and Ferb…
“Stick to the Status Quo” is the perfect song to describe groupthink if it was a high school
The Japanese exchange student when I was a freshman admitted to me she only learned English because of high school musical. She was disappointed by American high school irl lol
Fun fact: In elementary school I auditioned for the talent show with the first song they sing when the two meet. But only Zac/Troy's parts. lol
My cousin, who did basketball all through out high school, once for a talent show did the “get your head in the game” song, with a basketball and choreography and everything, it’s on video and I can’t wait to show it to his kids once they are old enough
Eden's speech at the end of this video was absolutely inspirational. I salute you for that one Eden!
You should have danced and singed while reacting to this movie!
Bro said singed 💀
I couldn’t help but crack up when they started yelling “HELP!! HELP ME!!”
The real villain of high school musical is the friend groups. Troy and Gabriella didn’t even follow the rules like auditioning you can’t go to callback without auditioning first.
Seeing you guys cringing so hard at Troy Bolton singing was for some reason one of the moments that had me dying
I love how you guys are team sharpay!!! THERES SO MANY VIDEOS explaining how she was never the villain just arrogant and misunderstood !!
It was obvious? She was just antagonistic at best.
The point of this story is that you can do whatever you want and it shouldn’t comprise who you are or what you want to be in the future. Sharpy, the geeks and jocks were all antagonists at one point. Not just sharpay
I wouldn't say so I think many 00s kids thought she was a jerk until they got older I mean every DCOM has a misunderstood villain but she wasn't a villain at all and that's what they were trying to say jokingly but it's true BUT IN THE 2nd one she definitely was a villain she was thirsty for Troy
@@bryana.escaleralopez
Back in highschool, my older brother was in charge of doing the welcome ceremony all the seniors do to welcome the new school year and he was practicing the final dance so he can teach it to his other classmates.l and I was there to help. Was fun.
“He is 35 now and the movie is 17 years old so he is 18” 😭😭😭
Interesting fact all people in the show including Zac Efron did sing in the studio for these songs. It wasn't until Zac Efron went to the premiere of this movie realize that his voice wasn't used on the tracks and he was shocked and it was really awkward for him. Although the part where he's in Gabriella's room upstairs where it's like an acapella of him singing that actually is Zac Efron's voice there.
Anyways they ended up using Drew series voice and Zac Efron kept asking why his voice wasn't on the tracks no one gave him a straight answer. That's why in the 2nd one he put his foot down and demanded that his voice be on the tracks.
I'm actually shocked after all these years that we haven't gotten leaked tracks with Zac Efron singing instead of Drew Seeley even if it wasn't polished with like the vocal effects and auto-tune somebody after the fact about leaking could go in and do that easily.
I'm actually dying to hear his voice singing on the tracks of the first High School Musical.
I live 20 minutes away from the school that this was filmed in, its really cool to go in there and see all the parts from the movie in real life
Bro in three years this movie is gonna be twenty years old.
4:55
While rare, some students can be found with wheeling backpacks even today.
I don't know why I wrote this with Ryan Bergara's voice XD
Feel free to read it that way though😅
5:10
That's why I only ever recall seeing these play on TV!
There's TV movies!
Made for TV!
I didn't even know that was a thing!
6:10
Wait, they're canonically related?
I SWEAR they were dating.
15:35
TRUE
That's the one I've seen the most and remember the best.
And it was so much better.
I just finished the trilogy, so the Spilling the Milk reaction is just what I needed.
This movie really shows that everything comes to you when you have the voice of an Angel and look more beautiful than anyone on the planet, things can go your way 🎉
Tho technically neither of the leads could sing
Fr they sounded really artificial
Day nine, the milkers have still not milked the ninjago reaction train
I'm surprised it wasn't brought up in the video, but Zac actually doesn't sing any of the songs in the first film, and is instead lip-syncing everything because he didn't know how to sing lol. It's kind of obvious to notice when you know this since he opens his mouth unnaturally wide whenever he's "singing".
The only part he's actually singing is when he's on Gabriella's balcony, which explains why he sounds so different there since it's his actual voice.
He does actually sing in the rest of the movies though.
12:13 This wasn't actually a bit, this was a moment of them breaking character in a cry for help on a count of them having to watch High School Musical.
Before i went to a performing arts highschool i was excited because i thought it'd be like HSM. I was so disappointed when it wasn't lol
15:45 - Yup, I can confirm Kor came out of a womb hating any existence of joy in his life because he's a Filipino🇵🇭
NOOOOO RYAN HES THE BEST CHARACTERRRRRRRRRRRRR, (also 2000s homophobia is the only reason ryan isnt gay)
There’s not that many Disney trilogies that strike the top of my favorites, but High School Musical remains high at the top for me The first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies are there too, because everything after the fourth movie doesn’t feel like a continuation of the previous three).
That exchange of lines between Mabel and Wendy in Gravity Falls won’t stop hurting me: “TV taught me that high school was some kind of musical.” “TV LIED, MAN!” Yes, yes it did. 😢 My high school years were annoying…
5:56 Literally reminded me of the Lanisters 😂
Brings a book everywhere
Frequently writes in cursive
Pretended my roller backpack was a race car
Y'all gotta chill with the call-outs, I just came to laugh, not get verbally jumped
the ryan being Argentinian joke had no business being that funny omg 😭
I only ever watched these movies last year and I actually liked them
1:00 in the first movie it wasn't zac efron who sang. But it was him in other two movies.
I can tell everyone in this video is younger than me by the reaction to phones in school, when this came out. Having a phone in school was TABOO in most schools. They weren't seen as necessary. They were only seen as distractions. I had my phone confiscated for 8 months by the school because my teacher didn't like me and it went off one time in my pocket, and that was years after this movie came out
I remember High School Musical fever reaching me when I lived in Colombia back in Elementary School.
A year later I moved back to the States and it was still going on strong.
This is the most hilarious HSM review I’ve ever watched 😂 I was laughing in the first minute.
I will not take this Ryan slander! My man is the most talented person in this farce!
The fucking mugshot sent me 😂😂
Hey! I bring books to parties! It's usually because I was reading it before the party and I don't want to put it down, but then I do put it down because I can't read properly because there is a party going on around me.
Petition for Jack, Kor, and Eden to watch the Twilight franchise. I would love to see them rib on the movie
Not gonna lie "bet on it" fron the second movie still goes hard
Them watching this trilogy is gonna be good, and you can Bet on It
Sharpay got screwed over, because even if you put effort and pride into something you love, highschool love and natural "talent (???)" automatically make you better.
As a drama kid I can confirm, were all evil
1:30 Vanessa Hudgens luckily turned 18 right before the movie in 2006, so you can call her bad
The reactions to Sharpay and Ryan’s musical performances were hilarious.
This movie is so unrealistic and I LOVE IT!
I love how the movie makes it seem like this would be an actual problem in real life. No one would care if the jock and a nerd were dating cause gabriela is cute as shit.
3:09 I feel like he was making a joke but he isnt wrong 😂 My parents friend was so excited when her son started high school and the school team was Wildcats, in like 2017 💀 Hell it was a huge meme at my school when it came out, because we were also Wildcats 😂

If I’m ever tired during homeschooling, my teacher would suggest do we need dance music and it would be a song from this movie and I always tried to decline the offer lol
Because it would be annoying, and I rather have music that I do enjoy
High school musical 2 is so good I hope they do it
11:39 I'll never get tired of Jack's laugh
Y’all should watch that movie where Zac effron is a married man who wished he could go back to high school and is magically young again. There is an awkward condom scene in sex Ed 😂
Like he gives up basket ball for his girlfriend so you could pretend it’s a sequel to high school musical 🤔
You should watch the bad lip reading of this. Pure gold.
This is like a modern grease 2 people meet over break girl randomly shows up at new school theres singing they fall in love
Zac Effron got his jaw destroyed by a water fountain after slipping in his home in socks. Not a fucking joke. That's why he got the mega chin.
The detention is literally just what the tech kids do tho 💀
The background music of that New Years scene when it starts sounds exactly like something that would play during the opening credits of a Hallmark movie where it just switches between panning shots of the small town or like cars driving around the town square or something.
Wait hold up, 8:20 Sharpay got nachos on her jacket
Then they had a progression of time
8:53 She's wearing the same jacket, implying that it's the same day that nacho scene took place
Did they not notice that when they were editing the movie?
05:56 now i know were the mangaka for Oshi no Ko got his inspiration for aqua and ruby from
High School Musical 3 is the best one, the songs are SO DAMN GOOD
