Strange scoring / rules. I can't conceive how touch scoring penalties for cleaning wheels is going to translate to a better determination of champion. And charging a score penalty for bonus-searching / detours on the return home seems absurd since the contestant is spending his own clock time on that. The contestant should get to choose how to spend their own clock -- extremely long opening search, hybrid return searches, or getting in the most speed runs possible. The Americanized rules feel forced and lame.
So navigation is purely based on wheel encoders? I'm amazed that there isn't more drift over time. Just a tiny bit of lost traction would result in a mis-orientation of the mouse.

Where can I get more information to learn about these navigation models?
How does the mouse know that it has reached the goal? Is there a radio signal there?
The goal is always a 2x2 square with one entry in the middle of the maze.
