- A few pointers on how to make your electronic kit feel more "real" to play!
This is not a "out of the box" set up tutorial but more of a general guide on how to set up your kit, the same ideas apply to acoustic or electric kits!
#howto #drumlesson #drums
Put this video together for some of my private students to help them with their own set up at home! Thought I'd share these points on here for anyone else it may help!
Thank you
Thanks!
Thank you very much for taking the time to share this with us all. Not knowing anything about drums or how to set them up, your instructions were very clear and makes a LOT of sense. You have a very nice way of explaining things. Thank you again.
Glad I could help!
The “how would you hit it if you were air drumming” is a brilliant tip. Thanks!
Makes sense doesn’t it!? Glad you found this useful 😀
Great video. I'm just starting out with an electronic kit and this has really helped with setting up.
Glad it helped you out Dave!
Nice. Been playing acoustic for a LONG time. Now I"m 60, just got a electric set and realizing I have to totally change the way I play and approach this new set up. Gave me some good ideas.....but basically, going to have to start over. I think my acoustic days are over.
Glad this helped ya! Hope you can enjoy your electric kit just the same 👍🏻
I got my son an electric drum kit for his birthday and the instructions were completely baffling. It was technically set up, but they didnt offer any best practices or tips. Basically, it was "8 steps and you are done, good luck going forward."
This video is really helpful in tweaking the configuration. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your knowledge!
Happy to help! There’s quite a difference between “putting it all together” and setting it up the best way for you. Hope he’s enjoying playing it!
Thank you very much for such down to earth practical help.
73 years young and 1st edrum kit. There are no instructions on how to set up. Thanks again.
Glad it helped! Happy drumming 🙌🏻😃
Thanks Phil, Clear and easy explanations, perfect thanks!
I've just finished building my drum riser and sound proofing the place as I'm on the top floor. Next part is setting up my kit so really glad I clicked this video. You've really helped me out! ☺️ Thanks Phil!
Awesome! I hope the sound proofing project went well and you're enjoying playing :)
Thank you for making this video, I've got my E drum yesterday and there are a lot of good videos on acoustic ones out there but for E kits yours is the best one I've found specially with the positioning of the toms. ❤️🔥
Glad it helped you out! Thank you 🙏🏻
Excellent video! Thanks 🙏 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Glad it helped!
Thanks. Great advice. I just got my Alesis Surge kit a week ago. I set it up and started playing as a rank beginner. It didn't feel just right so after watching your video I started over again, beginning with the throne just like you suggest. Then I positioned snare, then kick, and so on. Now it feels great.
Glad it helped!
I've been looking for a video like this for a long time. Thanks!!!
Excellent Advice! I’m close to the set up I need. This really helped to finish it. Well done and thanks.
Glad I could help Dave, happy drumming!

I’ve learned a lot of your style My friend. Keep it up
Thanks!
Good insights thanks!
thanks for checking it out!
Thanks for this, I have been searching for just this basic set up information. I have found almost nothing on drum height and placement relating to electronic drums.
You're welcome! I noticed there was a lack of info on this too, glad it helped
Thank you very much for your helpful video!
Glad it was helpful!

I was "666" like, so METAL@@philthebeat
Awesome 👍 I've been playing for 32 years, now. Although I come from an acoustic Kit background, I've been playing an electronic Kit for 12 years. Naturally, I already know this information... however, I'm always interested in how drummerZ choose to educate others... their style of teaching, the particular aspects of drumming that they cover...etc. I really like and appreciate how you explained the basic tennants of electronic drum 🥁 setup 🥁🥁 you definitely earned a Like and a Subscriber 👍👍👍😉😉😉🥁🥁🥁
Thanks Brian! It’s always good to hear a different point of view, even on stuff you’re already familiar with. Thanks for subscribing, I’ll have some more videos coming soon!
Thanks mate
Great video :)
Thanks!
Canny tutorial that mind Phil. I’ll be watching out for that when I next see you gig lol
I don’t necessarily take my own advice haha 😂
@@philthebeat 😂😂. Tasssskkkkk
didn’t really help me set it up but thanks
Wish I had a decent kit like that
Just keep playing and enjoying it, you never know what might happen!
I have about 20 hours of practice on an acoustic kit. I bought a ekit because I underestimated how loud an acoustic kit is. At first I didn't like it at all. The pads are super bouncy compared to my acoustic kit and I wasn't comfortable with the setup. I've tweaked the ekit a little over the last several days and with some play time I'm getting used to it. However I'm worried if I spend enough time on the ekit I'll dislike the acoustic kit. Life is hard haha
You'll definitely get used the the e-kit, just keep adjusting it to suit you the best you can!
how to connect the electric drums into the amplifier?
It depends, but usually a guitar cable (mono 1/4" jack lead) does the tricks from the "mono out" on the drums to the input on the amplifier?
@@philthebeat thanks lodicakes
Is it normal to change tombs position on e drums?
Yeah, I guess so! The downside on most e kits is that you can't really move them enough! You're often quite limited as they are all mounted to the same rack.
@ Random Thoughts It's a little bit disrespectful to drum in a cemetery, isn't it?
@@Simon-iy7mt LOL 😂
Why do a lot of drummers only like to use one rack Tom?
For me, it allows the ride to be in a better position and it just looks more rock n roll 😂 There’s no rules though really, as long as it works for you!
@@philthebeat thanks. I’m pretty new to drumming. I play guitar and keys and thought I’d buy a kit and give it a go :)
@@officialWWM Good on ya! I'm currently doing the opposite and dusting off my piano
@@philthebeat we are never happy 😆
"Excellent Advice,, I see people having to much kit" , leaving no playing space,
Thanks for watching Nick 😎
How can I set the hihat distance and height so my left hand and right hand sticks don't hit one another. I find I can't lift my left hand high without hitting the right hand stick. ua-cam.com/video/8hXYIax3O-c/v-deo.html
Your hi hat seems to be quite far away from the snare, maybe try bringing it closer to you ( I see you have a double kick pedal which makes that a compromise). Also try adjusting the height of your hi hats relative to the snare drum!
@@philthebeat Yes, the double kick pedal, the left frame of the drum skeleton and the electronic module create some barriers for the placement of the hi hats. I have raised the height of the hi hats and moved the hi hats further back closer to the drum module. This solved the problem.
You may want to create another video on how to set up electronic drum with double kick pedal.
