At the top of Sithonia, the pristine second #peninsula of Halkidiki, lies its #capital, #Nikiti. It is a #town of 2700 inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in #tourism, beekeeping and olive growing.
Nikiti is located100 kilometers south-east of #Thessaloniki, overlooking #Toronaios gulf.
South of Nikiti can be found the ruins of Galipsos, an ancient Greek city mentioned by #Herodotus. A Paleochristian #Basilica of #Sophronios dating to the 5th century aD is located on the foreshore.
Nikiti’s old town dates to the beginning of the 14th century when inhabitants moved inland to avoid #pirate raids. The old #village with its traditional #architecture and old #churches, is located on a hilly area a few hundred meters from the sea, with the church of Saint #Nikitas at its highest point.
The newer part of the town is being developed by the seashore, where the beach, a newly built #marina and a #trendy new #promenade are located.
This long and colorful promenade is the center of #activities in Nikiti, as it’s lined with a big variety of #restaurants, cafes and small #luxury apartments.
Most restaurants and beach bars have a beachfront orientation where you can enjoy delicious meals and refreshing #drinks with a spectacular #view of the brilliant blue sky and the #aquamarine water. Towards the marina at the northern end of the promenade you can find more #seafood restaraunts and pizzerias.
Nikiti #beach is long and sandy, an ideal place where visitors spend their #relaxing hours. There are #sunbeds, #umbrellas and open areas where families lie on their beach towels and enjoy the sand and #swimming in the crystal waters of the sea, which are officially the cleanest and clearest in the #European #Union.
The view of the water is nothing less than spectacular with different shades of blue and green.
Since you are on the west coast, the #sunsets are a daily nature’s wonder #panorama experience.
The #visitors of Nikiti have dozens of nearby excursion options, such as #Ormos #Panagias with sandy beach, fish #taverns and #cruise service to #Mount #Athos and #Ammouliani island.
#Diaporos island, #Vourvourou and #Karydi beach, are some of the top exotic places in Greece, as confirmed by these pictures.
And finally #Agios #Ioannis with its stunning beach!
