    Low latency, high frame rate, and static latency. Combine all 3 of those, and you have something that feels better. If you'd like to learn more about this, research some of the efforts that have gone into VR headsets recently. It absolutely does make a difference. And 90hz is a special threshold if you have low, static latency.

      Jitter sucks in almost everywhere it exists, it really is the worst thing to try to accommodate when expecting a specific response time. Give me fixed latency any week. Even DJI would feel better at 60fps if it were consistent framerate above all else. Its the same with jittery clock source oscillators, the expensive ones have much less jitter.

    You kinda perfectly described one of the reasons I chose HDZero over DJI and that's that it is confidence inspiring. I may not actually be flying any better, but I am feeling more confident in my flying and that's huge for me. I tried flying DJI and absolutely hated it. I felt so uncomfortable with every movement that I just didn't want to try anything new or interesting and ultimately just had way less fun because of that.

    It was October last year at the MGP Champs when Ryan Quellet showed me the 90fps. What I said to him was "It feels like, when I fly HDZero 60fps there is this gap between frames I wasn't even aware of and my brain was trying to fill the gap, whereas with this 90fps I'm seeing the actual image continuously."
    Between pre-ordering and receiving the goggle and 90fps cameras, I wondered whether what I thought I saw at the Champs was real or my imagination. I have done some racing with 90fps and now I can tell you it's freaking real

    The breakup of this system vs analog or the other digital systems seems much more bearable. Sure, there are corrupted parts at times. But each specific area in the image is only missing for a tiny fraction of a second. No completely dumped frames and there's no rollover, ever.

    • @PiDsPagePrototypes
      @PiDsPagePrototypes Рік тому

      The breakup almost looks like digital noise inside an analog transmission. Bet they've gone with a much smaller packet size, sending blocks of the image instead of whole frames.
      That or on the Rx end, it's much more aggressive in discarding data frames with any missing information, dump, move on, show next data now rather then try rebuild missing data.

    • @spikester
      @spikester Рік тому

      It has the same signal recovery characteristics as analog also, very predictable when you finish your move or whatever you expect there to be some packet loss, it always comes back every single time, there is no delay whatsoever to regain signal with hdzero, identical to analog. EDIT: oh and BTW the hdzero breakups doesn't compress very well on UA-cam, having to render the breakups in a YT video makes the rest of the video look worse. LOL

    In VR it's common knowledge that immersiveness really just starts below 20ms as an absolute limit and the less latency you get the less nausea the system is causing. so even with analog we are still just very close to that limit and that nano90 brings us much closer inside that range. Also not only the low latency/HFR but also the FIXED latency is, what makes timing in proximity so easy. With the variable latency of DJI you have to rely on full muscle memory and your experience that based on your current trajectory you'll make it. And I'm sure this is also the reason, Phantom FPV can't get that dive done. The moment that drone falls into that chimney, DJI raises the latency to compensate for the lower reception, that fucks up his timing and he smashes it either into the wall or ground cause in reality this system gives him no reference on where the drone really actually is in that moment. A fixed latency will do that and you'll be able to make out the important queues even from a noisy image. Really looking forward to testing this system. I also am surprised about how much quality they actually can transmit in this almost uncompressed raw-format they are sending - another thing that actually provides consistency. While DJI will blur your image when being far away, HDZ/Analog will still provide sharp edges and corners in that noisy or even black and white image. The only caveat is you won't see tree branches as good in close proximity, that's indeed a bummer! ;)

    Great review thanks. I’m still rocking the V1 DJI goggles with caddx vistas for most of my flying but I still have a set of original HDOs with rapidfire if I want to fly analogue.
    This fixed low latency looks very interesting though and the lower resolution looks good enough even on UA-cam. I’m guessing I would need the HDzero goggles to take advantage of this? Am I correct in thinking adding a HDzero VRX to my HDOs won’t cut it?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Рік тому +7

      Currently only the hdzero goggles do 90fps but the standalone receiver may support it in the future. However without the 90fps display and the end to end sync that is only possible with the hdzero goggles, you won't get the full advantage.

  • @SpicyFPV
    @SpicyFPV Рік тому +8

    Its really hard to explain it to people, they have to personally try flying a 90fps cam with the HDZG to understand. I have yet to find anyone, regardless of what they prefer, that hasn't almost immediately said, "Woa..." (Neo from the Matrix), when they fly it. I don't even care about the video quality reduction, something about it just makes it feel like magic. If you sit there on a bench and look at it, yeah, the resolution reduction is noticeable and a little offputting. However, as soon as you take off? That goes away and literally nothing matters except for how buttery smooth it feels. My biggest concern as a racer, is just going to be smashing those gorgeous cams on conduit gates and the significant amounts of crying my wallet will be doing.

    The 90fps camera really is that good. I regret only getting 3 of them now and I ordered more but have no idea when they will arrive. That is, in my opinion, the biggest downside of the system right now: hardware availability and waiting for an unknown amount of time to receive it. I know pros can compensate for flaws in control/vision systems and exploit benefits of them. Would be interesting to have a big shootout in how it affects amateurs. Does it help to learn, does it make no difference, does it make you complacent. For instance the piloting skill required for last minute corrections might not be as beneficial to novice or it can make it easier to move closer to that line. And one thing is perception like with resolution it's quite obvious but with things like latency consistency it's not that obvious unless we go to extreme ends. It would be a massive undertaking but would be awesome to see preferably in a close to scientific study design principles shootouts of how latency/image quality/ consistency of latency/level and type of breakup affects varous levels of experience for FPV.

    I can’t help but wonder if some of the magic comes from the progressive scan of the image too. Like yes, analog can be almost the same latency, but you’re only getting half the image with each frame. Maybe there’s something about the entire image updating every 11ms that just pushes it over the threshold of smoothness. Anyway I ordered a 90fps cam and I’m excited to see what it’s all about.

    I'm beginning to see some talking down about other systems. I think every FPV system has it own use case.
    I have HDZ and Walksnail VRX. Yesterday I maidened my Walksnail freestyle/ LR qwad, and got what I expected. Far superior image quality compared to HDZero, and penetration is better. Doesn't mean Walksnail is better than HDZ. I still going to buy a few more HDZ 90 fps camera for my racing qwsd. And I will buy 1 or 2 more Walksnail VTX and camera too for 5" or fix wing.
    And if I have the money, I will buy the Dji 03 with Goggle 2 too. I think that will be best system to put on a cinewhoop. I'll be stupid if I put the HDZ 90 fps camera on a cinewhoop, coz that 90fps means nothing when flying slow when image quality and penetration is more important.
    So there's really no need to argue which is the best system. Even analog has its own merits. Like can Dji, HDZero or Walksnail do audio from qwad?

      Currently it is only compatible with the hdzero goggles. HDZero has said they might make compatibility with the RX module in the future, but here's the thing: the RX module is almost always used with goggles that have 60fps screens. So you wouldn't get the 14 ms latency, and in fact most goggles have higher latency on their HDMI input. So to really get the most advantage, you need the HDZero goggles.

    I switched to DJI when it first came out. At first I loved how clear it was and how much more I could see. Over time I started to feel like I was flying worse and worse, so I slowly stopped flying because it just wasn't as enjoyable for some reason. About a month ago I started flying again, after about 8 months of not flying. I instantly noticed how bad the latency is and realized that's why I lost the enjoyment and interest. Really tempted to try this setup, but the video quality leaves a lot to be desired compared to DJI... If only we could get the best of both worlds.
    Great video as always. Hopefully I can find someone local that has this setup that'll let me try it out.

      At this time that's not possible because the vrx doesn't support 90 fps. But the goggles being limited to 60 fps means you won't get the full benefit even if somehow the vrx does work with the camera.

    In basic terms framerate is not latency. If you have 90fps but but it takes a whole minute to process a single frame, you won't be able to fly. Sure the gap between frames is smaller but the whole system is a minute behind making it unflyable. It's the same problem videogame streaming services like on live or stadia face, it seems like HDZ has a pretty good system to solve this problem

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Рік тому +5

      Yeah but it doesn't take a minute to process a single frame. HDZero pipeline latency is like 3 ms. Also don't forget that the faster framerate requires faster display time. At 30 fps, it takes 33 ms to draw one frame. At 60 fps it takes 16 ms. At 90 fps it takes 11 ms. So the higher the framerate, the lower the glass-to-glass latency.

      @@JoshuaBardwell Exactly. I also wonder if over time we'll see techniques that are used in VR for FPV to get a better sense of the quad's motion as in reproject the image you're seing by shifting/rotating it according to latest gyro read/prediction that can be sent at the end of frame reception. Sort of like Asynchroneus timewarp for FPV but not for head rotation but for quad rotation.

    • @dingbatfpv
      @dingbatfpv Рік тому +1

      @@JoshuaBardwell I should have been more clear, I was more trying to say that's why it should feel smoothr than DJI, I was using a minute as a fairly extreme example.
      DJI does 100fps or more I think? But then the latency in the processing means while the frames are drawn 10ms apart they are drawn a lot longer after they were captured than with HDZ, resulting in HDZ feeling smoother.
      I would also guess none-variable latency makes it feel better because its more consistent.

    This is one of the reason why I choose hdz system and hdz goggle, however it's a bit hard to explain to anyone who ask why.
    This might be similar with the feeling that I've got at the first time I switch over from frsky to elrs with 500hz packet rate which cause me fly much better and more confidence.
    So for you who still questioning how can hdz is better than any other digital system, it's hard to explain with words and you must try it by your self. The fpv video record might not be as best as the other digital system have but the fpv image is very good when you see it with your own eyes on a high quality oled monitor fpv such a hdz goggle had.

I would love to try it and feel that special sauce, but I don't have the budget to do so, and there isn't any FPV community at all around me that I know of.
