Going for it on 4th down is strenghing muscle memory.... Other teams with tense up (on either side offense or defense) on 4th down. When Detroit go for it it'll be just another down for the Lions
The other thing people don't take into account is the amount of pressure that Dan is putting on other coaching staffs having to plan for 4 downs of plays every single drive. That then forces coaches (good or bad) to have to make decisions they don't like to make or don't want to make. Dan brings people into his arena and makes them play his game. That will be massively important come playoff time, regardless of the opponent.
Dan Campbell has the best against the spread record (50 game minimum) as a head in NFL history. Something he's doing is getting the most out of this team and they end up playing above expectations more than coach has ever gotten his teams to do in NFL and has to be due to his 4th down aggression
one big thing no one is talking about also is I think GB defensive players were likely thinking the Lions aren't going to snap it, going to try and draw us offsides instead. Thats a huge edge to have at the snap especially when you only need a foot or so for the 1st down. If you look at that last play they got the best push they had all game on offense and I think big reason for that was the fact the Packers defenders were back on their heels worried about being drawn offsides more than they were stopping the run play
Well said bro. I didn’t think of it that way. The Lions 4th down success is having a negative psychological effect on teams. It keeps them on edge literally & figuratively 😂
Exactly! Also it goes on further than that too. Now they shave been doing it so much people will think Lions are going everyone so on a play like that, can easily get them to jump offsides
I think MCDC had the timing down, and the INT disrupted it. The fourth down attempt was a no-lose decision: either we get it and slow the clock down, going up by 2 scores, or we miss and get the timing back on MCDC's schedule.
Hey great point. Definitely head coach is riding his intuition just like many coaches in the past, but Dan Campbell is actually creating a third lane to use guiding his game plan!! Really quite remarkable
This was one of the more aggressive 4th down games for MCDC and it worked, you can tell they are being more strategic in there 4th downs. It’s working. Mistakes of last year will not be made again.
Having a feel for the team is vital to make sure a coach doesn't set up their players for failure. When a defense is gassed in the 4th, don't put them out for the last drive when we have seen prevent defenses get crushed uncountable times. Everyone has seen that happen. Doubly now that the league is an offensive passing league.
No one who holds the American flag pregame should be giving a throat-slash gesture to an opposing coach/team. Men and women have died defending that flag and his behavior was reprehensible having no place on the field while performing such an honorable duty. I hope the Detroit Lions organization has already stripped him of this privilege and hopefully his season tickets if he has them. He deserves no accolades and certainly not a voice on Woodward Sports. 🇺🇸
We need to be going for it in the regular season so that we are ready in the playoffs when absolutely have to go on 4th down. I don’t want the first time we go for it to be in the playoffs.
Analytics assume averages. Analysts create a model that assigns expected points to down and distance, based on position on the field. And in order to get a better model, they use data from all over the league, and for multiple seasons. So these assume average teams. The Lions offense is above average. And right now, with all the injuries, the Lions defense is below average. So you have to adjust the model to accommodate these conditions. Statistical modeling/analytics is not as straightforward as it is presented in sports media
I still don't think another team in NFL goes for it at the end of the game like he does there. I think he almost has to go for it now every time like that cause if not sends a different message to his team and he's all about showing confidence in his players
Our coach played for possessions to win the game knowing the consequences if his choice is not successful and he been winning more than losing on these types of decisions
It worked, this time (See recency bias, spenny). I will wait on coach DC's hof induction until his 4th down strategy proves itself in the post season...and I hope it does.
Here is the bottom line, Dan Campbell's philosophy is, you have 4 downs to make 10 yards. If his team is 4th and 3 or less, he trusts his O-Line and his Offense to get those yards and convert. Dan's Agenda is to control the TOP, Control the tempo and that means, 4 Downs to get 10 yards. He is changing the way Football is being coached. You will see in the near future Head Coaches will be coaching like Dan. "Analytics are for Losers!"
HCDC is coaching to win. The other HCs coach not to lose. I bet in those final 40 seconds. He only thought about, winning. What can I do to win? Not, what can I do to not lose. HCDC looks like his head was bred to win. 50 year fan , and what HCDC did was win. GO LIONS!!!😎😎😎
I know the three white cats, but this young man made the point I love best here. Dan coaches like Jim…off of feel. There’s a lot of angles to explore there. But the part about Dan changing 4th down…there have been HS and college teams put up stats by never punting. So what Dan has done is brought a “higher utilization percentage” on the 4th down. And like those early to market, that’s who reaps the biggest gains. They’ve started copying across the league this year and the copying is about to explode. Lets Go Lions!!!
Proving PFF is so overrated........they graded Pat O'Conner as worst defensive player on the field (WTF) and Skipper as playing a crappy game also, not sure what they were watching but not same game I seen
I think we can say both we love MCDC and is aggressive play calling while still calling him out for making his mistakes. After you just surrender the lead in a matter of minutes to start off the half on a deep pass and an int going for it on 4th at your own 30 isn’t the right call. I think we can/should be able to say that as fans; does that make any of the other calls wrong? Nope. Does it mean he should stop being aggressive with going for it? Absolutely not. But you can still call him out for a poor decision 🤷
I don't think he trusted bates to make the field goal with almost 40 seconds left. He is still going trust on bates. He trusted the O line to get him a first. He trusted bates at 2 seconds because now if he misses he don't have to stop packers from getting in field goal range
Matt LaFleur is in over his head. Like Neal said, he shouldn’t play poker. He looked fearful. He had some shook body language. He fucking let a fan get under his skin before the biggest HC game of his career. Then he challenges a 1st down in the 1st quarter? Who does that? It was semi-Eberflusian. The brilliant chess ♟️ move of the last play by DC & BJ…that was the first run TD of the 1st qtr. they did it again. Packers didn’t have the right personnel. All out of timeouts. Outcoached. Outplayed. Game Over! Matt LaFleur don’t want none! They’re done. We own them now!
The good thing about stubborn assholes (Heavyweights in THIS case) is that once they realize they're wrong and what the truth actually is, they switch from being stubborn against the truth to being stubborn for the truth. Thank you 2 heavies for coming to your senses. LOL
Please worship the CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, THE LORD GOD and try not to worry too much about the differences between the different religions and denominations, try to think about the similarities and the things they may have in common more than the differences. u going to score that fine but you not going to do it in 6mins.im going to let u score.and im going to stop u but thats 2 mins out of the game time instead of 6 mins lol
This was one of the more aggressive 4th down games for MCDC and it worked, you can tell they are being more strategic in there 4th downs. It’s working. Mistakes of last year will not be made again.
Every team trying to find a new head coach will be searching for a guy like Dan Campbell.
Yup, including trying to pluck from his staff.
Not every...but many will.
There's only one MCDC!!!!
Luckily for us, there is only 1 MCDC, dude is one of a kind
Going for it on 4th down is strenghing muscle memory....
Other teams with tense up (on either side offense or defense) on 4th down.
When Detroit go for it it'll be just another down for the Lions
Exactly 💯
Well said
Exactly. Been there done that on offense. Your defense? Not so much.
There’s a reason why having a “gut feeling” is a thing. I’ll trust that over analytics all day! One Pride baby!!!
I still remember Matt Lafluer trying to run through a security guard at Ford Field last year too.
😂😂 I forgot about that
ua-cam.com/users/shortsOA6oEHosh4k?si=l_y9h9DFjhK3JXsK Matt Lafluer At Ford Field
the thing is the other coaches in the league (and media) still havent caught on to this fact either giving the Lions a huge edge
I'm just glad the Lions (and us fans) have ten days to rest up. Three games in a twelve day span was exhausting.🦁
"You keep on doing whatever you're doing Skip!"
[Shows Skip dry heaving in the locker room]

This was a very strong episode. The best WoodwardSports clip I have seen, with insights worthy of national discussion.

They didn't just convert, they got *7 yards*
Someone who's been so instrumental in this turn around that doesn't get enough credit is Chris Speilman.
I think MCDC had the timing down, and the INT disrupted it. The fourth down attempt was a no-lose decision: either we get it and slow the clock down, going up by 2 scores, or we miss and get the timing back on MCDC's schedule.

I thought the same thing.
Love Spinnies passion for our Lions. It’s contagious.
This was one of the more aggressive 4th down games for MCDC and it worked, you can tell they are being more strategic in there 4th downs. It’s working. Mistakes of last year will not be made again.
Take a shot Everytime Sean says "this is all new to us. The fans don't know how to react."
MCDC Coach of the year. LION KINGS OF THE NORTH💙🦁🏈🏆🦁👑🧹
I miss Sean on the radio. “It is what it is” was my favorite sports talk show.

Maybe a depiction of Holmes cooking Campbell's Kneecap Soup...
Thru a mountain, a mountain for Dan.A mountain
The players will run through a mountain

No, that's loser stuff. It's situational and strategic. Think about the game.
The refs cost the Lions the game.
But the Lions won anyway.
Our coach played for possessions to win the game knowing the consequences if his choice is not successful and he been winning more than losing on these types of decisions
Each year dans record has gotten drastically better each year i don’t want to hear nothing else about this man
A lot of that unknown players work is a reflection of the coaching as well
The 1st TD the Packers got was due to 2 flags against the Lions that were not game infractions.
Is Neil a madman, or what? I love it.
I mean Neal 😏
The Lions are the best organization in sports right now, from Sheila Ford Hemp to the plumbers that unclog the toilets at Ford Field.
It worked, this time (See recency bias, spenny). I will wait on coach DC's hof induction until his 4th down strategy proves itself in the post season...and I hope it does.
One Pride!
Dan Campbell is the next Rocky

LaFlour looks afraid.
And his getting into it with a fan before the game is just embarrassing for him.
GB like Chicago figured out the defense in the 2nd half. Had to go for it on 4th down. Maybe the one in our own end. Maybe 8 punt that one.
GO LIONS!!!
How many times us lions fans finally stopped a team and begged to punt and they go for it and get it? That just kills your soul!
Sorry to say that Broderic Martin was pushed off the line on several plays up the middle since you asked, but I am not going to complain about a win.
Before, every wanted to do things the Patriot way, including the losing Lion, but now teams are doing things the Lions way.
If I'm Dan Campbell and have Sewell im going for it on 4th and 1 all the time😂
It's great being 4-5 on fourth down. I would rather it not take a fourth down to score from the 5.
I know the three white cats, but this young man made the point I love best here.

They would have kicked a FG on 4th down on that last possession, not punted it!
Hey he's right in a way but we are playing with a motive and ri show them we ain't tolerating the league disrespect no more
The good thing about stubborn assholes (Heavyweights in THIS case) is that once they realize they're wrong and what the truth actually is, they switch from being stubborn against the truth to being stubborn for the truth.
Thank you 2 heavies for coming to your senses. LOL
We need to appreciate our coach one day he will be gone
What's revolutionized the league is no defense.
The other teams aren’t going for it on 4th down boys😂
McNeil might have a problem with his jaw.
I truly believe GB would of tied it up
There is no doubt about it
I'll take the Danalytics over the analytics any day.
Being honest it's analytical and situational feel. It takes both.
lol, love your show and your belief in detroit, you guys rock!matt is a cuck, love it!!!
I want to name my first daughter Sheila.

Dan does NOT play ultra conservative football period 😂
The Lions are The Golden State Warriors of The NFL!
Its criminal Aaron Glen is not a head coach
This was one of the more aggressive 4th down games for MCDC and it worked, you can tell they are being more strategic in there 4th downs. It’s working. Mistakes of last year will not be made again.
