My cousins girlfriends sister was married to Dieter. When I first met him I had no idea of who he was. Nice and polite. I would have thought he would have been broken by his experiences.
At 63 years old in 2001 he rolled his wheelchair down to a firestation near his home and shot himself. PTSD stays with you for a life time. What he experienced was more than any soul could bare. God rest his soul and may he be at peace❤
Wow that’s mad disrespectful!!!! It was a Magical time!!!!!!!! Just listen to the way he describes the jungle and Vietnam, “Drifting on this Beautiful River”/“I couldn’t believe my eyes”/“we were lucky tho”/“everybody got their share!”/ “I couldn’t believe it! We didn’t have a scratch!!!” You are such a racist piece of shit, you are what’s wrong with America now adays!!! I guess this is Trumps America though. You make me so fucking sick, I hope my sons will be better Men/Women than you. I swear I would punch you in the mouth if I could. #FuckTrumpsRacistAmerica
What an amazing man! I wish I could have met him.... My parent's used to know him, from what I heard he was a crazy guy. The way he explains his story is really incredible.
what to me was how, while telling his story, as horrible the physical suffering from torture and starvation, as well as the constant fear and mental trauma...it was lonliness that made him pause, nearly breaking into tears. He reflects on the irony of the bear, his pet, his only friend...death. My heart aches just trying to imagine the feeling. -mark ruble, 4th ID US ARMY (ret)
I am a war connoisseur. One who was too young for Vietnam & too old for the middle east conflict after 9/11. I learned of WWII & Korea, (My Dads war), as a young child. I grew up with & witnessed Vietnam on the evening news with Walter Cronkite & The Huntly Brinkley report. I was always very interested in learning about Americas wars since I was very young. This story of survival & endurance ranks among the top, perhaps only second to the trials of Jan Sigurd Baalsrud of Norway during the Nazi occupation of Norway.
This man struggled with PTSD til his death..where he rolled his wheelchair to the firestation in his town and shot himself. He was Diagnosed with ALS in his twilight years and was ravaged by PTSD. God Forgive his trespasses and let him be at peace.
My dad is only a couple of years older than Dieter was. Teenage German soldier. This is something that modern people can't grasp or understand. That my parents were able to make a normal life for me in Canada after experiencing what they did. Superheroes.
The illustrations in this film are by Juan Santiago. In 1997 I was working with him in Ludwigsburg in Germany, One day he told me Werner Herzog wanted him for a movie but if anyone should phone asking for him I should say I have never heard of him and he does not work here. The next day a man calls for Juan and I say I dont know who he is talking about, after a while he says DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I`m Werner Herzogs Son get him to contact my father. Anyway latter I saw Juan draw these pictures.
He is truly a hero, his story is very inspirational. It's war men- were drafted into it and probably were going to do anything they could to survive. Most of the Americans didn't know what they were getting themselves into in Vietnam. This man is an amazing example of strength and courage for everyone. Yes people were killed and war should never be the solution but for anyone who thinks he shouldn't be considered a hero look at his story, also him as an individual and not what the government drafted him into war for.
He joined knowing what so many people today forget. Socialism and communism are the worst forms of government. He grew up in nazi Germany and came to the states and joined the military to fight the forms of government that he had seen oppress so many people. War is indeed necessary at times. Sad but true. Men like Mr. Dengler are driven by a need and desire to help rid the world of tyranny and to make a world where their families can prosper and be safe.
@@pfdrtom you're having trouble thinking with all that American/capitalist cock in your mouth so far it's blocking your brain from producing original thoughts. your country sure is proud :)
He’s an amazing man that never gave up. Aww poor guy 😞 no human should have to go through that when he spoke of his friend that had his head taken off in front of him he choked up. The horrors he faced we couldn’t even imagine. A amazing story of survival we never know how much mental strength we have until faced with death. Rip 🙏
Wow, man...why did Herzog leave the bear out of Rescue Dawn? That's a perfect little metaphorical moment that would have translated very well onto the big screen.
What an awesome story of guts and will to survive. Some of the tests our creator gives us can be so daunting. Praise Yahweh Elohim for his trials. Salvation is worth it.
quite a touching story. "the only freind i had in the end was death..." its quite sad how such fine men get caught up in such dehumanising situations. and i am sure it wasnt just the americans that went through hell
Yea I just watched the movie again and then I go all research I wanna learn everything about him n what he went through crazy and the way he died at the end my heart aches and my family was from Germany so the accent is normal and brings back a lot of memories
God bless Dieter Dengler and our POWs & MIAs. We won't ever forget you or your sacrifice. Also our KIA and WIA forever remain in our hearts and prayers. #DOL
He had the will to survive or stay there and suffer I would rather die trying than to surrender to the enemy, yes lives will be taken but if only one life made it back home that’s worth it than loosing everyone to the hands of the enemy,if you don’t understand the will to live then you might as well be dead .dieter was a hero in his on right.

I think that this was a human tragedy and people who can't see beyond of whether Dieter deserved it or not are barking here at the wrong video. no human should go through an experience like Dieter's and those who torture others with no other goal than revenge are sick bastards that are vorse than animals because these kill for need but don't torture for fun. and this is what happened in that secret camp in the jungle and others like it. I can't find any other explanation to it...

this is one of the best documentries I've seen
I saw this documentary in full on BBC. its amazing. he always wanted to be a pilot. he used to watch P51s over his home village as a kid in germany.
they had a short scene flashback to him as a child in bombed-out post-war Germany and damaged allied aircraft nearly clippiing the eaves of his house
Unbelievable story. Heartbreaking

Dieter clearly states in the film that he never wanted to go to war. He joined the Navy to learn to fly. He says it was his "burning desire", to fly.

Whys he sound that way ? Is it bcuz he spoke vietnamese ? (Accent changes where u are)
he comes from German parents upbringing..
But it is true, he does not sound like a typical german speaking english. There might be a tiny bit of a vietnamese accent in there?
So messed up
what does he mean with "the first guy was carrying his intestines around" is this an american saying or does he mean it literally.

Should've put the bear in the movie.

Actually, Dengler didn't die of ALS... he had ALS, and chose to shoot his Brains out instead of slowly succumbing to this horrible disease.
