    Thanks guys!...I record using the sansamp plugging it directly into the great river preamp,no virtual instruments just a little bit of compression and eq (cutting low frequencies)!I love the sound of stingray but after many years I have to admit that fender precision is "the"punk sound!..and it cut trough the mix a lot easier than musicman!

    Fucking Amazing Job Dude!!! I enjoyed watching your video as much as the three times I was lucky enough to see this song live!..... which I know hardly anyone has been lucky enough to see it once live... But seriously, well done! I've been in a ska/punk band for a while as a trombonist, and learned the horn part for fun, but now I owe you one as a new bass player...... I'm vamping your video until I can play this song through! It will definitely take a long time. If you're in a band please respond in a link or something! You got skills man!

    I'm currently working on a full cover of the Decline (all instruments) so you should see it on YT in some weeks.
    By the way, your tone is amazing, which (virtual) amp do you use? Your Stingray sounds great (i have a Danelectro DC Bass, same model used by Fat Mike) !

    Another example of why bass is not easier than guitar..... The only reason people think it is, is b/c of how the bass is often used (in a way more simplistic role).

    Really great cover ! How do you play the part at 3:11 ?

    • @averyisland
      @averyisland 5 років тому +1

      Just figured this out myself after like 10 years of listening to this song. Try moving your picking hand in a circle, plucking the G and D strings as you do. As you strum upwards through the circle, you pluck the G and D strings (in that order), and as you strum downward, you pluck the D string again. That's essentially the pattern (two notes on the D string and one note on the G string, repeated five times for each chord), so once you can do that circle motion thing really fast, you should be able to play the part. A good way of staying in time for the part is to focus on hitting the G string note at the correct time.
      This "circular motion" picking pattern appears to be the same thing that the player in this video is doing. Dunno if that's how Fatty plays it, though (haven't gotten a good look during live performances and videos).

    • @emilefichter4687
      @emilefichter4687 5 років тому

      @@averyisland thanks a lot ! I'm pretty sure that's what Mike does from what I've seen from live videos. The circular motion is what I was missing : now I can totally picture playing it like that. Just to be clear, you start by strumming downward, right ? Because the pattern I hear is G G A(A on the D string).
      Again, thanks a lot !!!

      MrLordloganman it's just the DI line mixed with sansamp! no amp at all!

  • @secretwarrior5245
    @secretwarrior5245 8 років тому

    What settings are you using to get the right sound (Bass/Mid/Treb/etc)?

    • @haydenbosler2880
      @haydenbosler2880 7 років тому +2

      Fat Mike's tone (and most punk bassists including Mark Hoppus and Freeman from Rancid) use a pretty trebley tone. Start with Treble on 8, mid on 5 or so and bass on like 4 and then tweak it till it sounds right because every amp is different. I would also reccomend looking into Compressors, as it helps the sound as well as the higher notes be heard.

  • @agnstdgrain
    @agnstdgrain 6 років тому

    Wow, looks to be good but hard to tell because for some insane reason you basically made your bass the same level as on the original album. When you do a cover like this you, uh, definitely want your instrument to stand out a bit....
